Traduction: It remembers all of Polly, this girl who did not want to leave the family home last year, and who constantly disturbed her parents during their brooding... She even stole a baby, to our great confusion! And here it well is one year later, aged two, it attempts to breed for the first time at the Turcot interchange in Montreal a new nest that has just been discovered. Thanks to Sylvain Cusson who has discovered the location and spotted the pending leg of our beautiful Polly. The most disturbing in all that, it is that its partner seems to be his brother Algo...! To date the digits of his ring that we have managed to read on our photos, but it remains to be confirmed...

My french is rusty but here is the gist of it:
Eve starts off saying 'we all remember Polly, the juvie who wouldn't leave the nest last year and who continuously interfered with her parents during incubation last year, she also to our great distress stole one of the babies. And here she is one year later, at 2 years of age attempting to nest herself for the first time at a newly discovered nest. Thank you to Sylvain Cusson who discovered and read our Polly's bands.
The most troubling thing is her partner might be her brother Algo. So far the numbers we've managed to read on his bands correspond to Algo's but have still to be confirmed.'

Not yet and no mention of eggs but she has just found them so I'm sure we'll get more information now that she knows where Polly and Algo are!! This is so exciting, I was so worried about her when she vanished like that, honestly I figured they chased her off but was afraid they may have hurt her inadvertently especially after she took the baby. I'm so glad she has not only survived but is thriving - obviously she's able to hunt well since she's made it this far!

When this question came up when Archer was with Mariah, the majority opinion was the worst case would be infertile eggs and any fertile eggs laid would very likely be fine.

In Winnepeg, the female Princess is now partnered with her son - Ivy, last year they raised 4 chicks successfully. Going back in that gene pool, there has been several instances of cross breeding and they must have good, strong genes as the line has not only continued but thrived. I know I've read of one case where brother and sister nested and had no successful hatches however in other cases like dearly departed James in Virginia - he and his sister were partnered for years and produced alot of offspring.

The incest taboo is primarily cultural, at least on the scale of a generation or two, as far as I know. Inbred dogs that end up with weak hips and the like have been inbred a LOT. Of course if there is some very dominant weakness, it may be magnified by inbreeding, but in many very successful human cultures (that have no observed high rate of birth defects, etc), what we would call "first cousins" are the preferred choices of mate.

Inbreeding of course doesn't *create* problems in itself. Recessive genes are everywhere, and all it takes it two copies of one to show the trait. Dominant ones are easier to track, but recessives are forever, and the trait can show up many generations down, when two unsuspecting carriers chance to match up. In a species near the top of the food chain, individuals getting two bad copies get weeded out pretty quickly. Carol

Algo and Polly, the offspring of Spirit and Rogers, born in 2009, now have a brand new box at the Turcot interchange. This is the company Falcon Environmental Services (FES) in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Wildlife and Transportation (MTQ) who carried out the construction and installation of the box. The latter is on the stack J-4, a battery "north" of the pile where their first nest was located last year. After a failed nesting attempt in 2011, it is hoped that 2012 will bring them healthy falcons. Thank you to Marilou G. Skellig (SEF) for the photo of the box. Way to go Polly!! What a nice nest too! Shouldn't there be a guard in front? :o Posted by Eve Bélisle at 5:40 p.m.

Yes Kris G, they have prefered the ledge this year but the Turcot Interchange will be pulled down next year or the year after. They will build a new Turcot Interchange. It seems that Polly and Algo have a "Piggot" too. There is a sub-adult there. Watchers have named her Shirley, she is unbanded. And Algo is very interrested... :  crying:

regret to inform you that there have been deaths reported from juvenile to the Turcot Interchange. From the information I have for now every reason to believe that he died of natural causes.
When I receive more details, I will let you part.
Algo and Polly are still present but somewhat silent
Translated from french. This was their only hatch and they lost it so early. So sad for them. Hope they find out the cause. :(

Hello,
...... :-(
I received an e-mail last Wednesday telling me there was a problem at Turcot, no signs of the juvenile.
I went for a quick visit at the end of the day to see one off the adult staring at the nest and no sign of life at the nest. But these are situations that we've seen before so I was not exactly sure that something happen to the juvenile.
When I arrived Thursday morning at 6h00 am Polly was at the nest just staring inside and out for more then a hour but at that point I knew something was wrong, the juvenile should have been already up and asking for food.
When Polly move I finally saw part of the juvenile not moving not far from the edge of the nest.
Polly gave the impression that she didn't know why the juvenile was not giving any sign of life.
You can see a photo here:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/1170 ... 6421445186 (https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/1170 ... 6421445186)
After talking with a friend of mine who saw the juvenile Monday, chances are that he died of natural causes.
Like I wrote on F.B. I'm waiting for more details.
Since this is a natural nest, the falcon have chosen themselves to nest there without any human intervention, it' s possible that we never know what happen.
The people who were hired to keep an eye on him were supposed to intervene just in case of a problem with the workers and, or the work that needed to be done to the structure.
If the falcons would have use the nest box, it would have been a different story.
When Polly arrived at the nest, you can see that she's touching the juvenile with one of here feet here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUaZWXhCT4Q#ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUaZWXhCT4Q#ws)
You can see her lying next to the juvenile here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3_yomLkQkU#ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3_yomLkQkU#ws)
As for Roger and Spirit the latest news is telling me also that's the end of there nesting season.
So unfortunately...it's not a good year for either couple of Roger and Spirit or Algo and Polly. :-(
What can I say.....life goes on...I hope things get better with both family next year.

Spirit, Montreal. Every nigh she comes and take a look through the windows of the student resident bathrooms at the university. Pictes are made by one of the students, Léaw Roy :) "Let's see how you like it when someone waits around to capture a 'poop shot'!" :spit:

First egg for Spirit and Roger!

The first egg of 2013
It is apparent that without the cameras inside the nest box, it is difficult to know exactly when egg laying took place, how many eggs there might be, etc. But by observing the comings and goings of the two falcons, one can still have a good idea of the important dates, like the laying of the first egg, hatching, etc.
Today, we saw the first sign that an egg has been laid in the nest box. In fact, until now, Roger had not been spending more than a few minutes at a time at the nest box, even when Spirit was not there. Since we had cameras inside the nest in previous years, we have seen that as soon as the first egg has been laid, Roger stays in the nest box to incubate it during the times when Spirit is out of the nest. So, this afternoon, there was Roger spending 30 minutes at the nest, and here is the video captured by the motion detector connected to the telescope in my office:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-QSZBx2rVw# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-QSZBx2rVw#)
This is an indication which does not lie! It is likely that the first egg was laid in the morning between 7:20 a.m. and 12:40 p.m. Why not before 7:20? Because Roger went to the nest box around 7 a.m. after having delivered breakfast to Spirit, but he only stayed for a few minutes. Spirit returned to the nest at 7:20 after she had eaten and did not reappear until 12:40, in spite of visits by Roger, who probably wanted to mate, or simply to make sure that everything was going well inside . . .
Spirit and Roger have made us become accustomed to an early first egg in 2010 and 2011. On the contrary, in 2009, I had estimated the arrival of the first egg around the first of April. If this goes in the same way as in previous years, Spirit will lay three more eggs (one each 48-60 hours). We count 33 days of incubation from the time of arrival of the third egg, which gives us a hatch date around Mother's Day, if all goes well . . .
How will we know if there is a hatch? While the falcons sre in incubation mode, they never eat in the nest box. When the first chick emerges from its shell, we will see food brought into the nest box for the first time to fill the tiny, hungry beak! Let's cross our fingers that everything will go well from now on.

The peregrine falcon was seen yesterday at 5935 Côte-de-Liesse on the 6th floor of the school Vanguard! According to the information I have obtained, it would be ringed with a red ring / black, it is therefore possibly of the eastern United States ... keep your eyes open if you go there! Just putting this under this thread. Preventive removal falcons of the Champlain Bridge! They removed the eggs and hope the pair will nest in another location with a nest box. OK, it's the same thing I posted here! Guess their not protected at this site! :(

As per the article, they removed the eggs and placed them in an incubator. They've put in 'dummy' eggs for the falcons. They dont' mention if they will return the hatchlings to them once the eggs hatch - they could move the chicks to the nest box once hatched and the parents would find them. I know that's been done out in Edmonton in the past quite successfully.

If the couple adopt their new nest the real eggs will replace the dummy. If dont, the eggs will stay in incubator till hatching and placed in another nest to be adopted by an other couple.
Here in MTL we will have for many, many, many years of demolition and construction of the «« échangeur Turcot »» and a new Champlain bridge. They announce 2020 !!!!!!......... I bet 3 to 5 years more

First hatch(es) of 2013
What good news on this Mother's Day 2013! Looking at the cameras this morning, I observed the first bringing of food to the nest. That is a sign that there is at least one little chick to feed, because before hatching begins the adults never eat in the nest . . .
Here is a video of what took place:

I need your help to find one of our birds of prey that escaped during a training session on August 8 to 18h. The bird cut the rope that was attached to leather straps to his feet. If you see it will be easily identifiable by leather straps United a metal drum that hang at the end of his legs during the flight. She was spotted heading to the industrial park on Maples near Cadieux Blvd Gérard-Valleyfield. Her name is Phoenix and it is a hybrid falcon Gyrfalcon / Sacre. She wears a ring with the identification number LMONTCAN 10,204. Please circulate quickly made to allow me to locate as soon as possible and call 450-601-0204 Posted on their site!
