The animal was perched on a snowbank with a broken bone near the end of its wing and couldn't fly, which means it also couldn't hunt and would eventually starve.

Interesting that they would release it near the area it was found.  Makes sense that it would be familiar with the location!

I think they usually do try to release them near where they were found. Unless as in Mariah's case it would be dangerous (Beauty).
