Title: Salt Lake City peregrine cam
Post by: Annette on 01-Apr-11, 05:13:09 AM
March 14, 2011 update
Salt Lake City's peregrine falcon adults have been observed in the area of the nest box located on the east face of at the northeast corner of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in downtown Salt Lake City.
If everything goes as planned—and the peregrine pair decides to use the specially outfitted nest box—then the peregrine falcon cam will be up and running soon for the 2011 nesting season. The camera should be online after the April 2–3 General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Sometime during the week beginning April 3 or as early as Monday, April 4, 2011, you should find the links for the live video feeds on this page.

Per the Utah Division of Wildlife page, the webcams went live yesterday, but all I'm getting is a black box.
Check out: http://wildlife.utah.gov/peregrine/ (http://wildlife.utah.gov/peregrine/) for info on the Salt Lack City (SLC) PeFa.
The actual nestcam links are:

Thanks for the tip! My patience was rewarded by a sighting of one of the two falcons, I don't know which as I can't tell them apart by sight and there is nothing to reference size by at the moment. Maybe I can start using their "Orville" as a reference, as it is fairly big! LOL Two pictures captured from their webcam of the bird, one in the scrape depression, the other preening on the edge of the nestbox.

The SLC Perigrine couple have an egg!! I don't know when it showed up, as I hadn't checked the nest cam in a while, but there it is tonight, pretty as can be! Woohoo, we may have babies again this year!

The last I've seen, there are only two eggs and hard incubation is underway for the last 2-3 days. Here is a close-up picture from camera 2, and a long-shot picture from Camera1 that shows where s/he is nesting in relationship to the entire nest box (s/he is in the far left corner of the box). The scenery visible outside the box in the long shot is the "mall" walk area outside the Joseph Smith Memorial Building (formerly the Hotel Utah ages ago) in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah.

Here is a picture of momma (I think) up and turning the 4 eggs. The 4th is behind her feet. This was the only shot I could get of the 4 eggs, she's sticking to them pretty hard. I think they have been in full time incubation for about a week now, so there's still quite a ways to go. A (very) rough estimate would have the hatching occurring around Memorial Day. I hope we don't have unseasonably cold (i.e., snowy) weather that weekend like we did a couple of years ago that resulted in the death of two of the eyases.

Biologists ruffle some feathers at UT Plucky parents shield chicks
Meet Cairo, Sendai, Madison, and Gaia, four adorable chicks. 2 males, 2 females
It's hard not to get a warm and fuzzy feeling for them. Yet you might want to know Mama and Papa Peregrine Falcon -- aka Belle and Allen, respectively -- weren't especially thrilled by Thursday's human encounter, an annual rite of spring on the University of Toledo campus since the breeding pair produced their first offspring in 2007.

There haven't been any hatches at the SLC Peregrine nest yet this year, and for right now, I am hoping they hold off for a couple more days. The forecast is for cold, stormy weather for the weekend, warming up the beginning of next week.
Checking in on the webcam, the male seems to be incubating the eggs right now and there isn't a bit of a sign of shell or white fluff, so we'll keep our eyes open over the weekend (anticipated hatch date was approximately the 24th to 26th.)

Haha, more likely chewing him out for doing an inadequate job. He had an egg exposed for a while there and when she came back again, she made sure to roll it and cover it up. Nancy

Still no hatch as of this morning and mom doesn't seem as unsettled as she was yesterday. I'm glad, weather is supposed to be cold and stormy the next two days. If they hold off until Monday the temps will be more supportive of eyeas survival.

First hatch! Caught a picture of the mom and half a shell and have been watching her eating the shell for the past 15 minutes. She's sticking tight to the little one however and hasn't given me a glimpse of it. Just as well, want the little wee one to stay warm!

There is another broken shell in the scrape this morning, so we have at least a second hatch. :-) Anyone who would like to watch, go to http://wildlife.utah.gov/peregrine/ (http://wildlife.utah.gov/peregrine/) and choose Camera2 to get the closeup. Did mama remove the other egg from the "nest", is that it there on the right? She's definitely not brooding it any more from what I see on camera right now. I wonder what she senses to make her do that so fast without giving it a day or so more to hatch? If only we really could read their minds!

Just saw the 4th egg still tucked under (mom?) brooding, yay! Supposedly they have had snow in the area dtoday, so they are sticking pretty tight to the nest today. We're having lots of rainshowers north of there. But tomorrow it is supposed to be in the 70's, in fact it should be in the 70's to maybe even low 80's the rest of the week, so we might catch a glimpse more of the kids later in the week as it starts to warm (and they start to grow, of course.)

We are sad to report that Sally passed away on Tuesday and Amelia, who was first out of the box, passed away overnight on Wednesday.
Before she died, Amelia was taken to a rehabber because Bob and others had observed some strange behavior. The rehabber picked her up yesterday evening and Amelia seemed to be doing okay.
Right now, it's unknown what caused the deaths of Amelia and Sally. Our biologists are going to perform necropsies (autopsies) on the two birds in order to try to figure out what happened and, more importantly, to try to protect the other two birds.

Salt Lake City Peregrine Falcons Update on Primo: He spent most of the day perched on the Administration Building (the one you can see in the cam, across the box). He finally came down and the team was able to band him and get him back up to the roof. From there, he flew to the north side of the Joseph Smith Memorial building. He's unstuck, exploring and doing great!

Update: Boxer (as bird #3 is unofficially being called) is doing well. The rehabber can't find anything wrong with him/her (we still aren't sure of sex) and the X-ray of its gut came back fine, too. The falcon will be kept overnight for observation, then if everything continues to go well, he/she may be released as early as tomorrow morning.
Primo hasn't been spotted for a while. Bob is going to seek permission from security to get up to the roof of a nearby building. It's likely that Primo is resting in some shade somewhere.

Update: Last night, both birds decided to paint the town red. Boxer Sue took a few big flights and ended up on a ledge near the Salt Palace. Concerned of her whereabouts far from home, Marylou (a dedicated volunteer) stayed and kept an eye on Boxer Sue all night. This morning she flew back to JSMB and was fed a meal at 6:20. They can see her right now and she's doing well.
Primo's luck was not as good. At about the same time Boxer Sue left the area for a big flight last night, Primo did too. He was flying with one of his parents when he slammed into the Zions Bank tower glass. He was on his feet, awake, when Bob got to him. The team was able to towel him and get him to the rehabber. He has been examined and hydrated and is displaying normal behavior. This is a great sign! The rehabber will keep him probably until later this week.

Update: As you may have read on Liz's blog (http://slcfalcons.blogspot.com/ (http://slcfalcons.blogspot.com/)) there's been a lot going on with the falcon kids. Boxer Sue is doing great. She's had a few really good flight days and seems to be progressing.
Primo has had a few complications since suffering his crash last week. He is still being observed by the rehabber this morning, but will hopefully be released by 11:00 or noon today. Keep your fingers crossed!

Primo has had a lot of life experience for such a youngster. Soon after fledging, Primo had a nasty crash into a nearby building in Salt Lake. His x-rays look okay, but he's not currently prepared to be in the wild. He had been staying with a licensed rehabilitator here in Utah. September 12, Primo was transported to a bigger flight cage at a facility in Colorado. There, he will continue to be observed. He'll also have a chance to practice his flight skills and will learn to chase, catch and eat live prey. Our hope is that he'll be ready for release sometime soon. We will keep you updated with his progress. Hopefully, we'll continue to get some more photos, too! Primo resides in the building on the right. Primo, on the highest perch in the enclosure, shares this area with two other adults. Primo's flight enclosure. Primo

One of the eggs collapsed the other day-inside was yellow liquid that got onto the lone chick. People that saw what happened thought the mother had consumed the contents of the egg after it collapsed so it was hard to tell what was in it.

I'm surprised he fledged with mom right in the box. Strange one that Solo.
June 28: Solo has been very restless, attacking the camera and the opening at the south end of the box today. The weirdest behavior was a sort of 'slip n slide' action over the top of the egg and then rubbing and squirming on top of it. Very odd. I will be down at the gardens early tomorrow, hoping for fledge! (he did)

Sunday Night Update Everything is beginning to blur together. Solo has been picked up from the ground at least twice more today. I arrived about 7:45 this morning. Solo was perched on the very top of the West wing of JSMB. Mom was flying by over and over, probably to get him to try a flight. Shortly after that, he did, flying south and then east headed to land on some of the windows on the Zion's Bank bldg. Of course there is no place to land there, so he careened east above S. Temple and tried for the Admin Bldg. He touched the top edge and then drifted downward, not able to grab the ledge. He ended in the gar...den by the sidewalk. He was put back on the Beehive, where Mom encouraged him to move over to the North side and he eventually came down on a ledge and she delivered a pigeon. He ate and then rested there from about 11:00 and was still there when I left at 2:00. I called Bob later and he said Solo had attempted a flight again, landing over by the oval near the tall Church Office building. He again was put on the Beehive and was still there at 8:00 when I talked to Bob. Word on Dad/male adult is that there is no fractures to the wing but he will stay at rehab until he is completely well and not favoring that wing. For now, it appears he will not be around much to help out with Solo. Solo Rescued again Still some white fluff

Solo will be staying overnight with Joann for observation and x-rays. He appears to have an injured wing. We'll update on his status as soon as we get more information.
Update-
We also suspect Solo has impact injuries to his legs/feet. X-rays are scheduled for Friday and he will be with Joann until then and possibly beyond. The previous post about a wing injury is not certain. The x-rays will shed more light on what's going on.

FACEBOOK UPDATE SALT LAKE CITY
We have some bad news to report. :crying: :' (On July 13, 2013, Solo, the only young-of-the-year peregrine falcon to hatch at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building (JSMB) this year, died from injuries sustained on July 3. The injuries were a result of a high-speed impact into the north face of the Zion’s Bank Tower located due south of the JSMB. Following his injury and rescue, Solo was transported to a Salt Lake City rehabilitation facility where supportive therapies were started under the care of Jo Stoddard. X-rays were taken on July 5. While no fractures were evidenced, Solo suffered soft tissue, nerve and spinal cord injuries. These injuries resulted in flaccid paralysis of both legs, incontinence and head trauma. While some slight improvement in the paralysis was detected over the 10-day holding period, other systems began to shut down. He was found dead midday on Saturday.

Salt Lake City Peregrine Falcons Hi there. We don't have any major updates, we just wanted to break the silence and calm any nerves concerning dad peregrine. He's doing just fine. His injury will prevent him from returning to the wild, unfortunately. I hope she will be okay — sorry to hear she is ill. At least she is being cared for. :(

It is with real regret that we must report that the adult, female peregrine falcon retrieved from the ground on March 29 was recently euthanized. Although the bird (believed to be the female, adult of the peregrine pair that has successfully nested upon the Joseph Smith Memorial Building as far back as at least 2011) made some improvement as a result of treatment for a respiratory ailment, she was rather quickly determined to be blind in one eye and, with time, suffered problems with the second eye as well. Sometime during the week of July 12, it was determined that continued treatment would be excruciatingly painful and frightening to her and the difficult decision was made by an expert rehabilitator to humanely put her down.
We'll never know to what extent her age may have contributed to her demise, but affliction of wild, healthy birds with aspergillosis not thought to be common. Maybe her age contributed to a weakened condition which allowed this fungal respiratory disease to ultimately take her life. While we're all sad about the outcome, as mere mortals, all we (who have come to love these birds) can do is look to future and the 2016 nesting season.
RIP, sweet thing. Oh how you have thrilled and captivated us through the years.
