Title: Peregrines in Zurich
Post by: Annette on 09-May-11, 01:40:30 PM
Today suddenly died female Carla in the early morning just before she was feeding her eyases. The prey was probably poisoned. A forum member reported: "A very tragic day when sweet carla's live came to an unforeseeable end. I was really astonished to seeing her body laying in that flat positon in front of her hungry waiting chick. First I thought that to many users were blocking the stream and I wondered if the cam froze for that reason. As the chick didn't want to wait anymore after 2-3 minutes and vanished into the box I realized the adult female must be dead. I mailed to Mr. Stefan Hose (Grün Stadt Zürich) and let him know what happened asking him for considering to evacuate the chicks as it was done at Norfolk Botanical Garden too in case of a dangerous feed Situation. Mr. Hose didn't respond to my mail yet but the result could be seen after nearly half an hour. The last picture showing the removal of carla's body made it clear that my request was not in vain. So let's remind of a precious and unique swiss female falcon giving us so much joy over years. Bye bye Carla we will miss you but cute Antonio will find another young mate - I guess who - because we may have seen her some months ago...the young one with clear stripes which appeared at springtime when Carla was absent. Let nature open the next love game and we will enjoy it!" A forum picture Why are there such awful people? :crying: >:(

:crying: Life is full of drama whether it be in nature or humans. We must keep on keeping on as they say. There IS more good than bad we just tend to dwell on the bad more. Try to be positive! :2cents:

I like your two cents, MAK! Yes, we do have to keep on keeping on! I'm with you there, but it is still so sad. The picture is sad. Were the young rescued and taken to be fostered? My positive thought is that the prey was not poisoned, and perhaps it was another cause.
I hope so. Is it still early enough for the male to find another mate? Will the nest site be tested? Annette, are you from Switzerland? You have the most beautiful country! I visited there in what seems a lifetime ago. Lucerne...before the beautiful bridge burned down; Zurich, and further south...I only remember Jungfrau. I will return to Switzerland some day...that is my positive thought for the day!
This truly is a world wide forum! All with one thing in common --love of the peregrines! I'm going to bet that is more likely love of all avian creatures.

I am from Germany not Swizerland.

It's hard enough when it is a territorial battle or "natural" causes but a mother bird caring for her young dying because of poisoned prey is even more of a heartbreak :crying:

Update of female
The female was studied. It did not die from poisoning or infection, but probably from heart and circulatory failure. This death is not uncommon in birds.

A final update about the three young falcons:
Stiftung PanEco They are not longer at our Bird Sanctuary. They are in freedom and none of them came back. That is a good sign, so they are able to live for their own.

Another tragic event at the Zurich nest. The beautiful juvie, Josefina, who had bonded with Antonio and had become his new mate, has been found dead. It is so sad to lose her so young, not quite a year old. Poor little one; she must have been stuck in the fence for some time. :( :( :(
I translated this from the site:
The young female falcon had an accident
It is with great regret that we have to inform you that on Friday, February 22, 2013, the young female peregrine from the Josefstrasse power plant nest became entangled in a snow fence while she was hunting. Firefighters and game wardens brought the bird down from there, but sadly, she was already dead.
We had cherished the hope that we might have chicks at this nest again in 2013, but these hopes have fallen to a low level. Whether a new female will once again find her way here remains doubtful.

Not a lot of pefas in those parts it seems, took almost 2 years for this sub adult sweetie to show up and we were all so hopeful he would finally have a mate.

There is another sub adult there!!! She is ringed! (banded). There was another female around one day with a ring and they thought she might just be passing through on migration but guess what she's at the box with Antonio!!
Terka has photos of them together at the nest box!
