So how many of you are going?

Might Canada consider this as an invasion?  :hysterical:

I'm going to try to make it up to Canada Square for the banding this morning at 10 am so I can check out the 'invading interlopers'!   :2thumbsup:

Going to go get ready now as I"m located about an hour from that site.

MAK just called, her and Joyce stopped at Buffalo. Saw 3 Juvies and BB on nest watching over them. Off to CT where they found only 1 adult. No sightings at Grain Elevator and now on their way to Statler then Burlington. As long as they get a signal, I'll post updates.

They are going to try and hit every nest on the way....even Valient, at Ogdensburg, if that's him.

Title: MAK & Joyce's trip to Canada
Post by: Donna on 10-Jun-11, 10:19:54 AM
I'll make a new thread so not to combine it with the Rochester watch reports.

Ok, so they left the Grain and went to Statler. Took a few pics from ground level, when a light bulb went off in Joyce's evil mind!  There was an old building across from the Statler, so they decided to go in that building and up to the 26th floor, which is directly across from the nest. Got a birds eye view of the nest with 3 Juvies in it. No adults that they could find. Guess they passed someone in the building and said they are just going to see the Falcons and the guy said OK!! How easy was that??

Next stop Burlington, hopefully they will have a signal but I doubt it. We'll see.

If you come in Montréal, be careful....  ;)  We have 2 falcons named Spirit and Roger who are very agressive and protective . They have pushed away an american eagle five days ago; not very welcoming these parents!!!    :hurt:  ;)

It's the first flight here too.

SOS Can anyone help Joyce and MAK? No one has communication with them and Joyce had an accident, (both she and MAK are fine) but they won't let Joyce take her car home, (even though it runs). She has bad front end damage. Can someone get a hold of Carol and the girls to let them know. Sue is worried! They are in Toronto some where and no PH signal. I want to help but just don't know how. I see Lisa has signal, is there anyway to get a hold of her?? Thanks

Joyce and Mak are in good hands, they left my site at about 3:15 with Bruce and were headed to the clearing centre where they have to report the accident.  The CAA (Canadian Automobile Association) was with them, he took the bumper off and otherwise the car was driveable.

They are hoping to get cleared to drive it straight home otherwise they will rent a car.  They got to see Jack, Angel and the kids for a bit while we waited on everyone to come to our aid.  Hopefully they will get to come home soon.

A new twist....Joyce's car is NOT in driving condition. Her axel is shot. The Car rental place closed and if they get a car some how, they can only take it as far as the border. Other option...bus. They have so much stuff and not prepared for the bus. Bruce, (as sweet as he is), will stay with them until they find a way home or a Hotel. It just gets worse.  :(

All is good again. Bruce took them to the Airport to rent a car. Should be on their way after a good dinner. They haven't eaten since breakfast. Guess midnight-ish, they will be home. Sheesh! Poor Joyce, has to leave her car then pick it up again.

Today is the first day in a long time that I didn't check in at all until a little while ago.  First, MAK and Joyce, -such devoted watchers, photographers and reporters -- GLAD YOU ARE OKAY!    Someone was watching over you!   Car's and car parts can be replaced -- people can't be!    Second, thanks to Bruce and Carly, and Donna for watching out for them.   It is true - "birds of a feather....".  Thank you.
Ladies, get home safe!  I hope you don't have any "next day" aches and pains, but    at least you will be home.  Beauty is waiting for you!    Be safe, ladies!

A BIG thank you To Bruce, who took good care of the girls, right up to the end!

To Linda Woods, thank you for hooking Sue up with Bruce and you have a great sense of humor!! Lazy Boy!! I pictured all the watchers down at Sheraton watching from their recliners! Too funny.

Thanks everyone for your concerns about our ordeal in Canada.

I feel bad that we missed out on our Saturday falcon watches, and poor MAK & Bruce having to hang out like that all day. Prior to coming to Toronto, Carol, Kathy, Lisa and Dana had signed up to to join in the Sheraton Centre watch on Saturday after seeing Stormin'.  MAK and I thought we would check out Etobicoke Sun Life, since we heard the 3 eyases at that site are ready to fledge too. We were glad we did because Carly was the only one on watch.  Unfortunately, our watch ended too soon.

Carly contacted Bruce Massey while I was exchanging information with the other driver. The driver of the other car, was kind enough to tell us about the Collision Center, but we waited for Bruce. Neither MAK, Carly, or myself had a cell phone. While waiting for Bruce, we went back to falcon watching with Carly. What a perfect thing to distract the mind for a few minutes. She gave us support, keeping us company, and took us inside the Sun Life building.  Credit card pay phones - pretty unique and we could call home. Wonderful man...Bruce! Stayed with us throughout the whole day. Bruce offered his CAA card to call a towing company. He made telephone connections for us to let our fellow falcon watchers know we were OK.

We sure did learn a lot about the way they handle accidents in Toronto.  Never heard of a Collision Center, but it is a convenient way to handle fender benders. There are 3 centers for the entire metropolitan area. The front half of the collision center handles all of the details, then the back half is like a police station.  The tow truck driver wasn't aware that I had a 4-wheel drive, so he couldn't tow it.  He didn't have a flat bed, and I'm not sure if he had dollies.  When I drove my car, it was definitely out of alignment.  My steering wheel had to be held to the left to get the car to go straight.  Immediately upon viewing my car, the policeman said "not drivable."

The CPF people are a fantastic group.  Mark was out-of-town, but he was in touch with Bruce to get status updates.  He even offered us a boat ride across the lake if we couldn't find any way to get home. LOL!

Thanks to our Canadian friends for all your help and support.

First, I am so very happy that no one was hurt. Thank goodness!  Second, a big thanks to our CPF friends.  What good friends you are!

Now, imagine our surprise after we arrived at the Toronto Sheraton (just having left Joyce & MAK at Stormin's nest site) and after joining the CPF Watchers Zoe, Anne & Linda W being told  that MAK and Joyce had been in a car accident.  I'm pretty sure they thought we had also been involved in the accident.  It was very confusing and we were shocked and very concerned.  We couldn't believe it!  I wish they had been able to call us (Kathy O and Lisa had working cell phones).  My phone like Joyce's and MAK's does not work once you pass over the border.  We would have joined them in a heartbeat.

When Linda W arrived, she called Bruce for an update and Lisa spoke to Joyce for a short time.

I'm just glad that Bruce was able to help them get through all the Canadian rules and laws.  and we were so very happy that no one had been hurt.  Thanks Bruce, you're a sweetheart.

Kathy, Lisa, Dana and I did not return home until last night.  No fledges for us at the Sheraton, but the two big girls at Burlington look like they're ready to fledge at any moment.  Not much white left on them at all.  We couldn't find any Watchers while we were there.  Hated to leave.

I'll post pics and report as soon as I can.

Carol P.

Just to serve as a warning: when in Canada it will cost you big bucks to make calls on the pay phones. I made 4 calls home from Toronto and it cost $83.84 on my ATM card because my tracfone doesn't get a signal across the border.  :scaredblue:

Roaming charges for Verizon are very high in Canada.  I remember one trip to find Quest when she was at the Lennox Power Plant between texts abd calls I spent about $75 additional.  I have learned to be a little more cautious.
