Title: Hurricane Irene
Post by: Donna on 24-Aug-11, 11:26:34 PM
Careful out there everyone.  Bad stuff coming our way.   :scaredblue:

Should be past us by midnite according to the Weather Channel.

I'm worried about the Hurricane that's headin our way!! Like, we're so prepared. My sister in Fla is wishing us Good Luck!!  :stupid: Hope we don't get what they say! Better get the milk and bread...

Hope the storm isn't too severe Carol.

If Irene follows 1985 Gloria's path, you should be wet and a bit windy, Donna, in Northern NJ.  For those on the Island and in CT, that will be a different story!  We are still planning to go to Hickory, NC over the weekend, but we are going to turn off the pool filter (leaves and branches), bring in my lawn decorations, and put my hanging plants on the ground.  Might not have to do that much because the current track is sparing the Bay.  Should be an interesting 24-hours!

Good luck, everyone - and stay safe!

As it happens, this time 25 years ago, Hurricane Charlie struck Ireland. My sister and I flew back from Amsterdam on that night, and then we had the long drive back to Wicklow. I will never forget it!!

I remember Hurricane Gloria in 1985.  I was living on the north shore of Long Island, and Gloria hit the Island hard!    Lots of damage, flooding, and power outages. Not a fun time.  I hope that Irene drifts further east and does not hit the east coast as hard!

Where ever this Hurricane hits, it's going to be nasty.  The last potential tract of the storm had it sideswiping Rochester!  Keep in touch and let us know how you're doing over the next few days.  Stay safe everyone!   :rain:

Checking in From Smith Mt Lake, VA (near Lynchburg) and headed to western NC (Hickory) - NOTHING is forecast for either location.  As for home, it has already been downgraded to CAT 1 (85 MPH sustained winds at the eye-wall, not at the edges, remember).  Heavy rain is expected (we lowered the pool about a foot).  Loose stuff was brought in (except bird feeders, which were filled).  If a tree falls, cant do a thing about it anyway.  We'll be back home on Monday.  Oh!  Left 2 canays in a coal mine - a bowl of ice cubes in each freezer to warn me if the power was off a long time.  If I find a frozen puddle, not eating the food!

I'm as ready as I can be.  Right now I'm waiting for some clearer idea when the heavy rains will actually get here.  I need to head into work ahead of the real nasty stuff (I work in a nursing home-all hands needed in critical weather) but it's barely moved in the past few hours.

The press coverage is annoying me!  I have seen staged shots of downtown Annapolis (heavy Rain on the roads) and Baltimore (Curtis Bay, which floods all the time with a boat in the hospital parking lot on a trailer).  Feedback from Owings is a heavy rain event.  TS warning still, but we saw that all the time on the boat!  Except in the winter they are called nor'easters.

I'm alive!!! Brutal winds over night and heavy rains. Major flooding all over. The eye will hit around 10am. They say still a Cat 1. No power loss as of yet. The day has just started. I actually slept all alone downstairs. So many roads closed due to downed trees and flooding. Waiting for the rest of the day. Feel so sorry for those on the coast, they are getting slammed. Stay safe, stay dry, if you can.

Ed may not get home from work tonight with all the roads closed. :(

Yes, Aafke will be back!!!  I'm in fairly close contact with here and she will be!  She was away on a month's vacation, is catching up -- we all know that vacations wear one out completely and her 3 gardens got away from her, as gardens are want to do!!  But she will be back, once things are back in some kind of order!  I'll let her know that you all have been missing her!!  We all need that!

And saying that, I am thinking about all you folk on the east coast of the USA!!  Have been watching the happenings on CNN...  Jan in CT is okay so far, but the storm hasn't completely reached her yet.  Did have some sleep, a good breakfast!  Donna -- have been thinking about you!  And heard yesterday from Betty Faye Lawton -- she's prepared for the winds, loss of power up there in NH -- at least she's up on high ground!  All my positive thoughts to all you out there!!

Best wishes,

Paul checking in here.  We have one tree down in our yard, and lots of leaves, small branches, and twigs everywhere.  It's as if forest giants had a big party with lots of green confetti. Our power held on until a bit past midnight and then decided that it had performed sufficiently in the face of overwhelming odds, and departed.  The robo-voice on the telephone says that the electrons will report for duty again between noon and six.  Our peak wind was 58 mph (93 kph), a tie with the last big storm, Isabel, in 2003.  We prepared as we did for Isabel, and got the about the same outcome.  It felt just like Isabel, in terms of wind and rain, but it lasted a good deal longer.

No word from the people on Ocracoke since yesterday, but flooding may have trashed the telephones.  They did make it through the highest winds, which were a far more challenging 85 mph (137 kph).

Best wishes to all you falcon fans who are in the storm now.

Paul

Phew!! What a morning. Me and Kara just had to go out and get some pics, that's why I was gone for a couple hours. It's so bad out there. Dover, Denville, Rockaway...all under water. Here's a few pics I took this morning.

These are all of Our baseball field in Denville. We had to leave as they were closing more roads and we had to get home.

Here's the bridge I took the pics of Denville from and a couple pics of the street my brother lives on.The water is rushing so fast in the houses, they can't pump it fast enough. It just rolls back in.

The Dover pic is across the highway from me. I have never seen it so bad. I don't think anyone is going any where for a few days.

Lots of flooding & trees down in the area.  Some roads washed out.  Some towns are just inundated.

I got power back sometime during the night but my pump shut off so I had no water...no time this morning to investigate.  Hopefully just the low pressure switch cut out.

One person died on the Croton River yesterday.  Five people got into a boat and went out into the river just above where it meets the Hudson River.  I was at the boat ramp at around 5 pm photographing the birds and hoping to see our eagles enjoying the wind.  I did not see the boat or people, but even at low tide at that time the river was higher than at high tide and current was faster than I have ever seen it.  Three rescue team members tried to go out in a raft and rescue the boaters, but they got swept under the train trestle and into the Hudson.  Everybody around here knows not to go into the river under the conditions we had yesterday.  It was a tragedy that didn't need to happen.

We weathered the storm a little better than other storms.  Power stayed on and had about the usual amount of water in the basement.  I could not believe the damage farther north on the Hudson.  I don't think people up north were prepared for it.

I read in our local Charlotte paper this morning that the Ocracoke dunes are gone.  So sorry, Paul.  Coastal Carolina has been severely affected.  But the wild horses of Assateague are OK.

CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. — The Chincoteague ponies are safe after Hurricane Irene tore past their island.

Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company spokeswoman Denise Bowden said Sunday that the herd of wild horses owned by the fire company since the 1920s made it through the storm without any nicks or scratches.

The company owns more than 100 of the wild ponies that graze on nearby Assateague Island. The ponies made famous by the novel "Misty of Chincoteague" and a subsequent movie are now visited by hundreds of thousands of people a year.

Bowden says pony committee members opened gates to let the ponies reach higher ground on Friday and put out extra hay. She says when committee members returned Sunday morning the ponies "looked fantastic," as docile and complacent as usual, as if nothing had happened.

Bowden says pony committee members opened gates to let the ponies reach higher ground on Friday and put out extra hay. She says when committee members returned Sunday morning the ponies "looked fantastic," as docile and complacent as usual, as if nothing had happened.
I'm glad you mentioned that, I got to thinking about them when I saw where all Irene was going.

I got power back sometime during the night but my pump shut off so I had no water...no time this morning to investigate.  Hopefully just the low pressure switch cut out.

Just needed to reset the switch... :phew:

Glad all reporting that they made it thru Irene even though so much damage and flooding.  Nicole In Montreal wrote me today that they had (in her words) +++rain but are OK.

There's a LOT of massive flooding-

This has pictures  & videos from Margaretville...

Wading away again in Margaretville...

That's what big hurricanes do when they hit the Northeast -- massive flooding. I remember the mess Agnes made in '72. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Agnes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Agnes)

I remember the damage that Agnes did on the east coast.  and who could forget Hurricane Carol in 1954 (ok I wasn't born quite yet).  Looks like the path of this deadly Hurricane was close to Irene's path.

So glad that everyone made it through Hurricane Irene safely.

Finally checking in from Owings, MD...

First, I knew this would be a rain event, but I never imagined the amount of Inland rain, which based on the upstate NY and PA amounts will flood on down to the Chesapeake soon - suspect we are going to have some wild silt and stuff washing into the Bay, which will hurt the crab harvest.  But that is to consider for another day.  Noticed Carol's Agnus mention and when I saw the EXTREME Upstate Flooding, I thought of Agnes - especially after seeing the High Water Mark at the Corning Museum of Glass a few years ago.  It is all coming my way.

We opted to drive back from NC Sunday evening and got home very late (way past my bedtime - almost time to get up - that late).  Did a quick reveiw and the basement was bone-dry, lots and lots of branches down, 3 trees going over (neighbors tied them back up), pool just at the edge (yay), so lots of clean-up.  Rich spent yesterday chipping wood and I addressed all of the gardens (really good shape considering) and cleaning the leaves etc. in the pool area.  Exhusted, hence no messages!

Wait until I share the pictures from Greenwood Lake (where I grew up and lived for 25-years)!  NEVER in my 53 years on this earth have I ever seen the water that high!  My friend said that the Donzi was touching the top of the boathouse!   :scaredblue:

Sorry that I didn't check in sooner, but I was pooped.

Knew you got hammered with Rain, as did we. Glad no damage but like the rest of us, lots of debris to clean. I have seen Denville and Dover flooded before but never to this extent. Janet, you have seen Denville, it's waist deep all through town. Still closed and many have lost their business. One man here in Dover got caught in the fast moving current on Blackwell St. He was moving so fast, no one could get him. From what they say, he just vanished. Awful. Glad ya's made it home safe.

I knew Denville, like Pompton Lakes was going under - it always does.  It is the amount of water in sections that don't usually flood that got my attention.  Governor Christy said that this could be a century storm in NJ and it just might be that.  Glad that you are on high ground, Donna.  Power is still out outside of my neighborhood.

Pic is in Front of our Hospital in Denville, you can see in the distance where it was all fields, is now all water.

Jet-sking throught town!  Sad, but it is a fun thing to do (that mixed emotion thing).  Did that have to shut the hospital down or were people able to get to it?  St. Clares is a GOOD hospital, for those that don't know the area.

Denville was totally shut down from all entrances, not sure how people got in Janet. Prob by boat!

I heard from Kapi. Her house has been severely damaged and contaminated by oil forcing her to move out. She has limited Internet access but was able to post to our FaceBook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Rfalconcam/138082889560335).

Thanks for thinking of me!  We were in Las Vegas!  Left day before the storm!!  House still here and cellar is dry-so we were lucky-house never lost power.  We did tie down the grill and put things away that could fly around.  We were luckier than the people in Vermont-though up north seemed to have gotten more rain than here . No we didn't win!!!  But had fun!!!
