Title: September 11th - Memories, Recovery, and Hope
Post by: valhalla on 07-Sep-11, 12:08:09 PM
I'm posting this Shutterfly link today because I might be able to answer questions now. I work in Arlington, VA - close enough to the Pentagon that I felt the plane hit (didn't know it until I saw the smoke). Arlington Police, Fire, and Sheriff are First Responders for the Pentagon, since the Pentagon is located in Arlington. I support the Emergancy Ops Center via IT.
We didn't have a Command Vehicle in 2001, but we do now - Big Red and she goes out for 2 Alarm and above. I participated in provisioning Big Red the 1st time and during the recent refresh. Perhaps something good came from that horrible day - I certainly hope so. I have thousands of images, but I selected these few because I want to convey something positive.
When I got home on 9/11/2001, I changed my signature line to "God Bless America" and it has been that way ever since.

This was very difficult for me to put together - Flight 93 had one of the guys from my old neighborhood, watched the Twin Towers come up out of the ground, Father Mike married my sister to her ex and Baptised both her boys, my current Arlington status - this is the first time I've done anything like this since 2002 - I'm still crying...

Sadly, you and I won't, but in Fairfax County, VA (we used their Command Vehicle) teachers are teaching 10-year olds something a bit different from what I lived up close and personal! "In Fairfax County, teachers de-emphasize the role of Islam in al-Qaeda's actions. "We want to separate the events of 9/11 from any particular cultural or religious group." Thank you Janet for sharing those pictures. The happenings on 9-11 were so very heart wrenching to remember and for those to live through it right in "their own back yard". I will NEVER forget that day and know my family will not either. Such a tragic day in our history. God Bless America and take comfort in the fact that it has made us more aware and maybe just a little more caring for our neighbors and surroundings. I have a son in the Navy since summer 2000,now serving on board the new George H. W. Bush aircraft carrier and I know They still fight to keep all of us as safe back here as they can. I doubt there is a day that goes by that I don't think of that day and pray for the families that have had to figure out how to go on with their lives, minus some very important loved ones with them.
I agree "WE MUST NEVER FORGET"!

Thank you Donna! I sure do miss him! It is lucky for us there has been this wonderful invention called email! Saves this Mom's sanity sometimes with him so VERY far away! My heart aches for those parents and loved ones who's Military child is "out in the field" and not available for internet. So I count my blessings daily and say so many prayers for ALL of them out there fighting to keep us ALL safe back here on the home shores.

Let us not forget that it was our friends in Canada that took in our planes and the passengers when airspace in the USA was closed. Thank You! In 2001 Norwegian Cruise Lines opened a new Canada-New England cruise and had a great introductory price. My husband and I sailed from NYC on September 2. He was jumping around with excitement like a little kid as we sailed past various landmarks while I crocheted in a deck chair. I did snap a few pictures and one of them included the Twin Towers. Had I known that it was the last time I would see them I would have paid more attention. :( We returned to port on September 9 and two days later they were gone. We enjoyed the cruise so much that we went on another one the following year - slightly different but still Canada-New England. On September 11, 2002 I attended an early morning memorial service in the ship's theater, and then later we both attended a second memorial service held on deck which included the ship's officers. They threw a wreath into the pool, which was nicely symbolic but then they had to fish it out so passengers could swim. On that day we were in a Canadian port - I think the town was Sydney, Nova Scotia but I can't swear to it. As my husband and I walked through the town nearly every shop had a memorial sign in the window. A woman approached us on the street and asked us if we were Americans from the ship. When we said yes, she said "I am so sorry about what happened." We thanked her and I was touched by her thoughtfulness. I believe a few other townspeople expressed similar sentiments during our visit. When we returned to the ship there was a ceremony of some sort taking place on the dock: a bunch of chairs, men and women in uniform (though we weren't sure what kind of uniform), a wreath, a podium. I think there was also a bell. We watched it from the deck but were too far up to hear anything. We learned from another passenger that the local fire department was holding a memorial service for the Canadians who were killed that day. Each firefighter present represented one of the victims. Even though we couldn't hear the speeches, it was a nice ceremony and I consider myself privileged to have witnessed it. So, let me jump on the bandwagon with the rest of you and thank a small town of Canadians for adding some unexpected warmth to that first anniversary.

As many of u know there is a show called American Chopper and Paul Teutul Jr and Orange County Chopper had built a motorcycle for The FDNY and they dedicated the motorcycle to the 343 firefighters that lost their lives on 911 and the bike is officially known as the Fire Bike and a firefighter gave Paul Jr a bolt and asked him if he can some how incorporate it into the bike the bolt came from the WTC so what Paul Jr did was weld the bolt on a sheet of steel diamond plate and waited until he got to the fire station to unveil the bike and he put the last piece of the bike in front of the people that the bike meant to the most here is a pic of the bike And here's the bolt

Several of our friends and neighbors in Greenwood Lake were FDNY. Took me 3 months to look for those names..... This one was personal for Orange County Chopper.

Tonight also, Irish radio station RTE Radio1 is presenting a commemoration on "The West Wind Blows" at 9pm Irish time. Features poetry selections such as Walt Whitman's "I hear America singing". I think this will be a podcast. The entirety of our News at One today is devoted to 9/11.

You're welcome, Carla. Today, I thanked God that it is hazy and the skies are gray in my area of MD. I think one of the reasons that I can spot eagles in flight so easily is because I'm always looking to the sky. I hate those crystal clear blue skies - guess I always will...

Watched Father Jonathan this morning (I'm not Catholic, btw) and he offered such hope! I was left with a good feeling of optimism. We just need to put our garbage at the curb and listen to what God, through his spokespeople, is telling us. It felt good!

BOATLIFT, An Untold Tale of 9/11 Resilience
BOATLIFT, An Untold Tale of 9/11 Resilience (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDOrzF7B2Kg#ws)
I think I have it someplace, but in the months following 9/11 one of the boating publications (either Boating or Power & Motoryatch) did a spread of the boats of the Hudson River. I believe there is a book about it too. I featured the pleasure boats, such as what we had on the River, AND people did come from all over with their boats to get people to the Jersey side. One guy hitched a ride to somewhere behind Sandy Point and then had to get home to somewhere in nothern NJ.
