Title: Say bye bye crows, Rochester Post by: Donna on 09-Dec-11, 07:04:54 AM Rochester will give crows a rude awakening
Rochester is calling in professionals to roust roosting crows from downtown. The details of the plan are similar to an announcement several weeks ago — except now, instead of saying Mayo Clinic will be hiring the professional company, the city is doing it. Council members agreed to the plan on Wednesday, and work will begin soon. It takes about three weeks. The company, U.S. Bird Abatement Services, will work under a not-to-exceed $25,000 contract, and one or more downtown businesses have pledged $12,500, said city council President Dennis Hanson. He declined to name the contributors. The company uses air horns, trained "attack birds," including peregrine falcons and hawks, and "possibly some lasers — just to scare the birds, not kill them," Hanson said. The aim is to relocate the untold thousands of crows that have made downtown Rochester their nightly home. The crows are here not necessarily because they've found food here, Hanson said, but because they've found safety and warmth. http://blogs.democratandchronicle.com/birds/?p=3013 (http://blogs.democratandchronicle.com/birds/?p=3013) Check out Bob's Starling post in Rochester Title: Re: Say bye bye crows, Rochester Post by: Shaky on 09-Dec-11, 07:29:52 AM For those concerned about problems with our falcons, this story is about Rochester, MN.

LOL
Bird abatement programs are pretty normal, but $25000 will be eaten up pretty fast. Has to be done every day with cases of huge flocks. I know one town had a roost of over 100000 crows they were trying to get rid of. Title: Re: Say bye bye crows, Rochester Post by: Tokira on 10-Dec-11, 10:51:55 AM I know one town had a roost of over 100000 crows they were trying to get rid of. Some ten or so years ago, the citizens of Leesburg, VA, had become quite concerned about the numbers of TVs soaring about day after day. A plan was hatched (if you'll excuse the expression) to trap and remove them. A baited cage-type trap was placed, and sure enough, it did attract TVs. Almost immediately, about 100 of them attempted to roost on it, promptly collapsing it. The attempt was abandoned, and to this day, one may enjoy watching Mother Nature's Cleanup Crew keeping the countryside tidy :2funny: Carol WV |
