Title: Don's Jersey Birding: Finding Food in Winter - It's Tough Out There Post by: Donna on 09-Feb-12, 06:56:36 AM http://wildnewjersey.tv/2012/02/07/dons-jersey-birding-finding-food-in-winter---its-tough-out-there.aspx (http://wildnewjersey.tv/2012/02/07/dons-jersey-birding-finding-food-in-winter---its-tough-out-there.aspx) He's right, the birds are devouring anything I put out. The starlings know when I feed my porch cat. They are ready to swoop in for some and the Blue Jays.

They are ready to swoop in for some and the Blue Jays. I've watch both Grackle and Blue Jay perch on the edge of the bowl I keep for the outside cats, and snitch a kibble. The Grackle hops a few steps away to eat his, while the Blue Jay carries his to the top of the fence. The same number of the usual species migrated out in fall, but anything that usually ends up staying locally isnt showing up at feeders as usual where most of my friends are. I suspect they are doing just fine finding food. Ive seen insects flying near the marsh as late as yesterday, there are berries on trees for fruit eaters like Robins and Waxwings and Chickadees and Goldfinch are finding fresh buds on confused trees.
