Thompson helped fend off the parents, and Clark brought the four 3-week-old chicks into the penthouse suite to manually place the bands on their legs — one with a tiny number for tracking purposes, the other with a distinctive color to be spotted at a distance. Chicks are banded young because once they leave the nest they never come back.
