Hi all,

We were talking about when would be a good weekend to have our 2012 Falcon Watch weekend.  It was decided that the weekend of August 3rd, 4th and 5th would be a good time.

So, if you've a hankering to come and visit the fair city of Rochester, NY to watch Beauty, Dot.ca and Orion flying high above, please consider coming that weekend to visit with the Rochester Falcon Watchers and the Rochester Falcons.  We hope that Orion will be flying well by then.

Also, let's not forget our other two resident Peregrines Pigott and KPT.

I've been wondering the same thing.  One week away and no plans?  Is anyone head of this? Breakfast in Aquaduct Park on Saturday?  Bring something?  List of people coming?  Out of towners (and I'm sure locals too) would probably like to know. Carol? Shaky? Any answer would be appreciated.

Not me. I'm out of the loop on this. I won't even be in town Saturday.

Locals are too busy watching. I suggest that someone else step up and take charge. Only a day or 2 left to design a t-shirt and upload it to CafePress so people can buy it and express ship it to themselves before they head to Rochester.

Too bad you or anyone in the know didn't say anything before about this. Personally, I wouldn't pay express shipping for a t-shirt now but would have bought one earlier if it had been offered. Is there ever going to be anything offered with Orion's picture on it and Beauty and DC? Would be nice to have something new & up-to-date offered in the store.

Kinda late for shirts, usually this is set-up before WW. YIKES!! Hmm, lemme think!

Since the Weekend  :falcon: is approaching quickly  :o  and folks will be preparing for their short or long trip to Rochester, we usually have a gathering on Saturday for a breakfast brunch. We'll need a list of who is coming and if you would like to bring something to share. Please put your name here and what you would like to bring. Examples, Coffee, creamer, sugar, cups, donuts,  :donut: bagels, cream cheese, napkins, plastic forks, knives, spoons. Dunkin Donuts has a "Box of Joe" to go, so we may need a couple of them, "Decaf also" I know this is last minute notice but it's nice to have coffee  :coffee: with friends  :handshake:. If you would like to make something, yahoo! Hoping for a great turn-out. THANKS.

Has anyone thought to contact June @ GVAS I know for a fact that there was a contribution made in 2011 for the Watchers Weekend. Since that didn't happen last year, the funds should still be available.

Hopefully one of the Rochester crew will see this when they get home from watching & get in touch with her...thanks!

I think Carl may come too, and maybe Michelle and Enrique who got rescue and release experience this year at Central Terminal.  Will check on that.

I'm local to Rochester, but I'm entertaining out of state company (my sister) starting Friday night, so I'll have to flit in and out of the weekend's activities. I hope to show her the nestbox and stop by the brunch and meet everyone, though. 

Too bad you didn't ask sooner. I would have given you the same answer, and you would have had time to step up and make those shirts so everyone wouldn't have to pay express shipping.

What happened to the design team that did the t-shirts in the past? 

So sorry I won't be out there this year.  I miss my regular visits from back in the M&K days.  However, I have a fragile 14-year old dog who is keeping me close to home these days.  I am hoping that there will be more regular offspring in the coming years and that I will be able to resume my visits.  Meanwhile, I  still have the KAVER license on my car and have been sharing photos of Orion on my FB page with a whole new audience who will soon be experiencing "empty nest syndrome."  Hope you have a great weekend.  I'll look forward to reading about it.

Falcon Watchers Weekend - August 3rd, 4th & 5th.

Let's have fun this coming weekend!  This is all very casual.  Always has been.  That's what makes it so much fun.  The only planned event is the Saturday morning gathering for breakfast.  The rest of the time is spent falcon watching and enjoying each others company for a few days.  In past years, some folks planned day trips on their own.  I know one year some of the visitors went to Niagara Falls for one of the days.

In 2010, Lou was nice enough to design a Watchers Weekend T-Shirt.  That was the only year we had one as far as I know.  This year one was not done.

This year has been a very difficult one for all of us.  Due to the late hatch and all that went on this year, things have been very unsettled for the Rochester Watchers and time got away from us.

Right now our top priority is Orion.  We are in the middle of a Fledge Watch which is taking up much of our time.  Many of us are spending long hours downtown.

Someone mentioned that a donation was made to go towards the Falcon Watch Weekend.  We are looking into this.

Let's all plan on meeting at Aqueduct Park at 9:00 am on Saturday morning, August 4th.  Everyone bring your own drink and something to pass around.  At last year's Watcher Weekend Brian H had us all doing the bird!   :laugh:

I can't wait to see all of you that are able to come visit Rochester this year.  See you next weekend!

p.s.  If anyone would like to keep track of who is going to come and post a list here, that would be great.   :thumbsup:

Oh shucks...Don will be out of town, returning over the weekend, and I have classes scheduled.  Unfortunately this Sunday is our day to work at the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge Visitor's Center.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we are going to make the WW.  Husband has bad COPD and weather is calling for >95f and humid.  Thinking about driving down next week when it is cooler and less humid.

So far it's an awesome day for the Watcher gathering.  Very warm, but there is a lot of shade in Aqueduct Park.  Orion was fed twice this morning, once by Beauty on the Telesca Bldg and once by D.C. on the base of Mercury.

We were thrilled to see Orion return to the nest box so that all his fans could see him on camera.   :clap:

It was wonderful, Linda K moved the camera from Mercury to the NB and we all got a wonderful show!

So jealous of all who are there!!!   Have fun!!!   :crying: :thumbsup:

Bill and I had a great time at the watchers gathering today! There were about 27 of us plus the star of the show -Orion!  He spent quite a bit of time with us relaxing on Mercury-right above us on the building next to the park. He did some flying to TS and down onto the nest box platform and even into the box! We also got to see DC a couple times too-Beauty was on OCSR.  Great time with good friends (old and new), plenty of good food and Falcons!  :2thumbsup:

My tatoo hasn't washed off yet.  Was a good one!

LOL Ruth, I finally washed mine off. Tim is quite the character. Had a blast! Was great meeting everyone. Orion slept most of the time on Mercury but when he was ready, what a flight to the NB. Next year I'm shooting for 2 weeks! Love it there. Thanks all!

So sorry Dave and I couldn't join you all for what sounded like a good time with friends. We just got home from Butterfield Lake after 2 weeks. It was the 1st time in 10 years that we have missed one :crying: Oh well there is always next year  :thumbsup: Glad you all had a good time, hope some one took pictures!!

Pictures are done at last! I must apologize at the outset-I had adjusted my camera's settings to get an early morning picture from the Broad Street bridge & forgot to reset it for quite a while...most of my people pics are WAY overexposed. I did what I could to them, but some are too blurry to even see the people, so I don't have pics of everyone that was there :(

Anyway-the weekend started early Saturday morning sharing Broad Street bridge with Dan. And it started with what every watcher waits for...a successful stoop!

Orion had left OCSR a bit before 6 and flew behind Thomson Reuters-we didn't see where he went. A little after 6 I spotted Beauty soaring & hovering WAY high over Xerox. She was just about out of sight when I spotted her flap once or twice then ZOOM! Down toward the north side of Broad St. We saw a flock of pigeons heading south down the river...she chased them UNDER the bridge...then came OVER the bridge right over our heads & BOOM nailed a pigeon as it was coming out from under the bridge!  She took the pigeon behind Thomson Reuters. Dana arrived after a bit and found Beauty feeding her catch to Orion on the Telesca building.

The rest of the day is a bit of a blur. We went down to "the hole" where we had a wonderful view of Beauty feeding Orion on Telesca. Orion eventually flew to Mercury where we had a great view of him as we enjoyed each others company in Aqueduct Park. In fact we didn't have to go far all day to keep "our" baby in sight!

I had to leave Sunday at noon, so I missed dancing in the rain...that looked like fun...but I had a great time seeing friends old & new...meeting my buddy Donna in person for the first time-I know-who would have thought we had never met in person before?...enjoying MAK's hospitality once again-next time I promise I'll be able to stay awake so we can sing karaoke & party!...and, of course, the stars of the weekend... Beauty...Dot.ca...and the magnificent Orion!

Great pictures Kris, Wendy, Ei, MAK, Dana, Carol P.  It WAS a very nice weekend for me, too.  Of course it was too short.  There is nothing like watching a successful young falcon rule the sky.

I didn't take many pics as I was just too overwhelmed with just being there. I was afraid if I got my camera ready, I would miss something, (you know how us NEWBS are with falcon watching)! The 7 hours Orion was sleeping on the TS building one day, I was sitting on a ledge in a parking lot down below. My neck was killing me from looking up all day, (now I know how MAK feels) but I didn't care because the second you look away, BAM, they are gone. I took no chances, I wanted to know where that youngster went when he took off. It's amazing how many people know about the falcons when they walk by and see a crazy person with binos looking up. THEY KNOW!! That was the day Mark went for a Cookie run and came back and gave me one. Thanks Mark, I know OR Oatmeal Raisin, ORion! I get it...lol. I really had a blast with all the watcher's, they be pretty funny. We laughed and laughed then....OH, there he goes someone yells! We all get up, binos in hand and follow then call out.."ON OCSR, or on TS wing"....etc. It was funny when I met Ei for the first time, it's like HEY...no shyness there!!! Too bad she had to leave so soon, next time Ei!
MAK couldn't have been more hospitable, we had a blast. I tested her one night and said, "let's go DT and find some falcons, (it was late) and she said OK, so no matter what I felt like doing, she was down with it. We didn't actually go but she was ready. WE didn't go site-seeing, go to the beach, go looking for eagles, osprey or any other raptor, we watched falcons and it was awesome. Let's put it this way, I did NOT want to leave! Thank you all for a great week!

I definitely know how that is...my very first trip to Rochester (2004, I think), I spent ALL day one day in the blazing sun (it was hot, even for me, and I'm used to heat), eating energy bars when everyone else went off to have lunch in a nice air-conditioned spot.  The falcons hadn't been flying much because of the heat, and I didn't want to miss it if they finally decided to provide some action.  I'm still grateful for Joyce, who spent a lot of that time with me!  I did the same thing at dinner, since I still hadn't seen much flying, and got to see a lovely stoop by Kaver straight down the face of the Kodak Tower.  The downside of that was there was no one to share it with...
