Title: Mariah at Kodak Park and Archer & Beauty at Times Square
Post by: Carol P. on 31-Jul-09, 08:30:40 PM
Now that Archer and Beauty have claimed most of Mariah's old Territory, it was wonderful to find Mariah on one of the Kodak Park Buildings. Kodak Park is about 4 miles north of Kodak Office. The Rochester Watchers will be keeping a close eye on both locations and will report what we see.

It'll be interesting to see if this is a new "permanent" location for Mariah or just a perch of convenience. Are there any plans to establish Falcon Watch North?

I meant to post this earlier... My Rochester falcon landmarks map (http://maps.google.com/maps/mm?hl=en&gl=us&ie=UTF8&view=map) I moved the marker to what I think is the building Mariah was seen on. You can see how close the river is...looks very falcon friendly!

The marker should be moved to the taller building closer to Lake Ave. (Look at the length of the shadows.)

You can see how close the river is...looks very falcon friendly! Cool, first thumbnail! Just a little south of the Research labs the river gorge is just about as deep as it is by the High Falls. There's a pedestrian bridge over the river that links up with the Seneca Park Zoo and a nice walking trail. There's plenty of places for falcon & fledge watchers too (if I can engage in a bit of hopeful thinking for next year).

The Rochester Watchers have been spending time watching the Kodak Park Buildings. I was there for a couple of hours yesterday morning. I didn't see Mariah, but I did see the two resident Red-tail Hawks that spent quite a bit of time perched on various buildings in the KP complex.
Also, Kathy O and I walked out onto the pedestrian bridge that Jim wrote about. It gave us a wonderful view of the river below and the building that Mariah was seen on. It's a gorgeous area filled with life. We'll definitely be keeping an eye on both Archer & Beauty and Mariah.

Dana and I looked for Mariah at Kodak Park and at the Seneca Tower yesterday around 2:00 PM yesterday. We didn't see anything. although we did notice the falcon nestbox that is still on the Hawkeye building while we were on the east side of the river. It may be another thing to take a look at while people are out and about.

That nestbox on the Hawkeye building is good news. Perhaps in a few weeks when the birds start their migrations...Mariah can attract a new mate. She has a nice area, a nestbox and of course she's a fierce beauty - what more can a single tiercel ask for! :abs-cheers:

Brian and I did the same...and spotted a crow on the Kodak Park building. There were a few boats going by in the gorge too. It's a nice way to check both directions to see if anything is flying high around the apartment building too.

The "Seneca Zoo" pedestrian bridge is an excellent site for taking fall photos of the gorge, as well as, we hope, pictures of falcons. I've only approached it from the eastern side - now I'll need to figure how how to access it from the west.

Not sure if this is the right way to do this; I am sooo excited!!!!! Drove by Kodak Park on my way to work this morning (7:30)and saw a PF on the building to the right in parking lot 58!!!! and on my way home(5:15 pm) turned onto the street off Lapham and a quick right onto the next street coming out to Lake Ave and saw either the Queen or the juvie just soaring between the buildings. What a beautiful way to start and end a work day!!! As soon as I get my daughter back to college, I will be spending more time in the area. Hope to see you guys there. Whoo Hoo!

Is there any concern about Mariah since she hasn't been seen in quite some time? Driven off again, or perhaps attacked? There appeared to be an uneasy co-existence ...even with the excellent supply of prey..

The interesting item about this photo is that Archer appears to be airborne even before he clears the rail. Whereas they usually step out into air, drop and climb, he seems to have gone straight airborne. Naturally doable, just different from what I would see at the Kodak tower. Of course, there is no playpen, etc, here.

Good point.
I'd been thinking, those downward pointing talons look a bit as if he's been taking ballet lessons. But, of course, part of the aim of ballet is for the dancers to appear to be weightless, as though they could take to the air at any minute.

There is a Kodaker that works in the building across the street that is keeping an eye on the taller research bldg (#83). No recent reports. I don't think she was actually hanging out there. I think she's been hunting in that area and roosting somewhere else. Possibly she's found a nice spot in the nearby gorge. :falcon: Carol P. Ok, finally found where everyone is hanging out!! Now that winter is coming, I wonder if Mariah will hang around there, or go somewhere else? What's been her pattern?
Good to see Shakey on board again - are you going to be doing your artistry again next year like you did for Mariah and Kaver? Boy, I sure miss Kaver - guess that's why I missed a lot of the action this year. :'(

Hi everyone..this is my first post!
(I have been watching the Falcons since the early days of the Falconcan, probably about 2001, and have posted on some of the older forums..but this is my first post here.)
Hi, im Scot in Rochester.. The forum software suggested I might want to start a new thread, since this thread is "old"..but I thought it made more sense just to keep this thread going, since all the previous discussion and background info on Mariah's "northern territory" is already here..
I work in Building 59 at Kodak Park, (its the building immediately North of the Eastman Memorial, along Lake ave north of Ridge Road.) I have lunch every day in a conference room on the 8th floor, which faces North. the window has a perfect view of the Kodak research buildings and the gorge area where Mariah was spotted last Summer..
(Have there been any Mariah spottings in 2010 yet? probably not..but I havent scanned all the threads yet..)
I put together a photo you all might find interesting:
This will (hopefully) be Mariah's new territory! im planning to bring binoculars into work! ;D
Which reminds me of a question.. I have been to a few Falcon Watches down by Kodak Tower over the years, before the apartment building was built on top of the parking lot..so I think im fairly good at spotting Falcons from the ground...but what about a side-on view? From my vantage point on the 8th floor, I will often be at "eye level" with Hawks and Falcons...anyone have any good illustrations of how to spot a Falcon from a side view? (as opposed to a Hawk or other raptors and large birds)
thanks, Scot

Scot, welcome to the Forum and congrats on your first post! Thanks for the aerial photo.
Mariah has been spotted in several locations north of the city including KP and Irondequoit. The only eye level view you'd probably every get would be of her perching on B83. She would most likely be on the edge of the roof or on the highest point on the building like the elevator machine room. She could also be on the east side of B81 looking down into the gorge for prey. I don't know if you'd be able to see her there from B59.

Post by: Joyce on 25-Feb-10, 12:18:02 PM
Welcome Scot. Thanks for the great aerial photo. No, Mariah has not been spotted since late October in Irondequoit. We don't know if she migrated and has not yet returned, or moved on to find a new nesting territory. Many of us still search north of downtown looking for falcons. A juvenile was spotted there, and we recently had an adult on a Lake Avenue apartment building.
We seem to have falcons in Rochester coming and going right now as we prepare for the nesting season. It will be wonderful to have another set of eyes (even from work). If we have a nesting pair downtown this year, we are going to need all the help we can get.
As for raptor ID from a distance, sometimes it is difficult even for experienced watchers to tell if it is a falcon, hawk, or coop until we get a closer look. A lot depends on lighting. For me, it was just repeated watches. Eventually I learned to see the differences in size, facial markings, coloration, wing shape and flight differences. I even studied images online and other watchers photographs.

You are most welcome Coutrygal. We can certainly use the help. Any time you can check out the KP area or come downtown and report what you see would be great. Especially during the week when many of the Watchers are working. Now with the nest site moving downtown from the KO area, it's going to be really hard to keep an eye on them. Right now we're not really sure what's going on. We really need eyes on the situation. It's always interesting. If you're downtown, and you see someone with binocs and cameras, don't hesitate to ask them if they're watching the Falcons. Good morning all. I would love to know where she is but I really think she is fine, wherever she is. I remember how upsetting it was when Rhea Mae fought Wind for the Sheraton. Wind was not seen again until last year and she was fine. Mariah may very well be in the area but just has not been seen yet.
