WINTER STORM UPDATE: Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a State of Emergency Thursday afternoon. He also said at midnight, the Long Island Expressway, I-87 South and I-84 will be closed until 5 a.m. The National Weather Service in Buffalo also increased its snow totals for the Rochester area, saying 18 to 24 inches of snow is expected to fall by Friday.   :scaredblue:

Could very well be, Donna.  I was out walking on Fitzhugh Street by City Hall shortly after that time.  I saw what I think was a falcon flying very fast over Kodak and then a few minutes later I spotted Beauty (her back was to me so I can't be sure) in that maze of gray/green iron girders underneath the platform on FCT.

Beauty was on top of cam 1 and DC was under the NE wing for almost two hours, with Beauty whining on and off.  Finally, he flew down and into the nestbox, and then she jumped off the cam and bowed.  A lot different from his first appearance in the nestbox last year!

Cam 4 is the only camera to catch a very quick visit by one of the falcons.  You can see the shadow and the tip of the tail on the right side.  That was fast!!!

Looks like there could be a band under the feathers...confirmed by several on BCAW that bird had bands with pics posted.

I did see bands when DC was in the box and Beauty came in for bonding at 10:13am.  When he showed up again (11:50am), I was able to just get the recorder started before he flew off.  Here's a few snaps as he flew off.  You can make out his bands.

Here's Beauty's visit.  I'm also not ruling out DC arriving with her.  There are several squeaks and chups when she first arrives.  I wonder if he was right near her, or behind her before she arrived.  I only had volume up on right screen.


ETA - Just looked at this large screen.  In the upper right box of split screen, you can see Beauty bowing and I believe DC's wings at :34-:35 in video.  So I think he was there with her.

Sweet lovers..no stooping this year ..I guess

I was out most of the afternoon, but set up the recorder before I left.

Beauty came by a few times today and looked great.  I think she wanted DC to come to the box for bonding a few times as she would sit on deck, on the beam closest to the wall or cam 1.

She went into the box to work on the scrape and so did DC.  Here are the videos.  When I re-recorded them to cut down the time of the entire video, it got a little jerky...

I've got video of bonding in box, just have to process and upload, but need to run an errand first.  Will also post the 3 minute bonding session from earlier today..

As promised here are the pre and post swoopfest bonding sessions.  I think DC was probably showing off his flying skills (I did not get a recording of his swooping, or see it live, so I'm not really sure of their interaction or Beauty's tone of vocalizations). The fact that he landed so close to the box makes be believe it was more of a bonding/cliff racing display.   

Also, seeing Beauty on top of cam 4 reminds me of past seasons when she would start spending the nights at the NB before she began laying eggs.

In this first video, (pre-swoop) this is the longest bonding session I believe I've seen in the box between these two over the past 3 seasons.  DC arrived first and was chirping for Beauty.  I had to refresh my cam, but paused recording so I could pick it up when she arrived.  He was there for over a minute before she arrived.  To me, they seem to get closer (distance wise) when bonding in the box this season.  I also notice the mirroring and possible beaking.  Years past, I don't think we saw this level of intensity in their box bonding sessions.

In this second video (post-swoop), Beauty was relaxing on top of cam 4 when she sees something in the distance and starts calling. She takes off and is gone for almost 2 minutes when both DC and Beauty arrive almost simultaneously.  DC gets in the box first and Beauty joins him. After DC departs, Beauty did some "housekeeping".

There's a few minutes delay between when tweets go out and when they show up on the forum. Hmm, is it twitters engineers or Rfalconcams!?  :whistle:

Twitter's. They put a cap on how on how many requests for tweets you can make per hour. Exceed the limit, and they shut you off for an hour. Yarak checks every 5 minutes. If checked any more often, the limit would be exceeded.

If Twitter ever wants to eliminate the cap, tweets will show up in the Forum in less than a minute. But then again, who checks the Forum every minute?

Actually, when things are cooking and I'm at work, I do. But I do follow twitter directly when I need real time info...but the kindle twitter app is WAY slow to update...

Forums are not meant for real time updates. The fact that ours echos tweets is an exception to the rule.

The Twitter web page and good twitter apps are the best places to get tweets in real time. Of course, you have to know ahead of time which Twitter members to follow or what hashtag they are using if you want to get those tweets. The beauty of our forum is that all of this is taken care of for you. You don't even need a twitter account. The tradeoff is you might have to wait 5 minutes to see a new tweet (after refreshing the page).

4:52 Visit of Beauty and DC/Unknown Male to NB.  Action starts at 2:28 in video.  Larry O had 2 flying together at BS at same time this took place.

Earlier in the afternoon, Beauty was in the box, rapidly chupping and look high up.  She stayed for a short time then departed.

Thanks for posting, NCA.  I agree that the second visitor was DC.  On the stills I can see his white hearts fairly clearly.  I also think our first visitor may have been around the area for most of the day.  I noticed that DC seemed somewhat distracted during his mid-day and afternoon bowing sessions, and you noted that Beauty seemed agitated when at the nestbox in the late afternoon. 

I don't think we had 2 and 2 today only because the cameras are in such a delay, that MAK sees the falcons at the nest before they even get there on the cams. Been monitoring this for a few days now and I know they are off, especially the stills. DC had plenty of time to leave the nest and be at BS in under 2 minutes. I don't know what's with the camera's lately but like Annette said the other morning....they were at the nest and gone before I even saw them on the live cam. I believe both were DC!

I don't believe we can conclude that there were 2 at each sight because of the delay factor in tweets,cameras and cyber space in general. The only sure way would have been to have someone downtown at the same time Larry was at BS to confirm 2 at the same time. I can see Beauty getting agitated over a gull too close to her nest especially if DC is not around to take care of it and not to mention she is probably close to laying eggs and I'm sure a gull would steal an egg for a snack. DC does not always go in the nest box either. Too many uncertainties.  I think everything was fine-just my opinion.  ;)

Looking back, I think you're right, MAK and Donna.  That first falcon (probably DC) took off from the nestbox and flew due south, right in the direction of BS.  And there is a slight delay in the cams.  And from the window I saw that gull first fly close to the nestbox and then make a second pass really close to the nestbox. 

Many thanks to all that post pictures from the Rfalconcam cameras.  The activity at the nest box will be picking up, now that egg laying is close.

Because we have a situation where there is one tiercel (male) and two females at two different locations, it's very important to keep track of what is going on.

So keep posting and make sure to let us know what you're seeing.

First off, there has been some discussion on why Dot.Ca is hesitant to give Beauty prey and they "fight" over the food.  There is an excellent post on C&C's Ohio Peregrine Facebook page, which I think helps us understand what is happening.  Basically, it is competing instincts (Survival vs. Reproduction) in the tiercel (Dot.Ca).  Here is a link to the page.  It really is a good explanation and some fantastic photos of a pair in Ohio:

2:07, Beauty is relaxing on the beam in front of the box when Dot.Ca comes screaming in, making a prey delivery to Beauty on deck.  Dot.Ca heads to the box and Beauty starts consuming her meal, before flying off.  Dot.Ca stayed at the NB the entire time.  First in the box, then on the beam, then to top of main cam, then to the top of cam 1.  Once Beauty returned, they headed to the box for an after meal bonding session. 

After the bonding session Beauty stayed behind, doing a little housekeeping and preening. She departed a little while later.  Then we have Dot.Ca arrive back at the box, very verbal, chirping and chupping.  He did some housekeeping of his own, scraping and stayed in the box until approx 3:49.  He flew off with a call.

Yes, that was me.  It seems if Beauty is in the box first, DC will stay on deck.  I honestly don't ever remember seeing him join her in the box.  It's normally the other way around.  And it seems he will race to get in the box, over the scrape first, probably to tell her: "Eggs here, eggs here.  Where are my eggs?".

I think there may be only one video/pic of him bonding with her while he is on the right.  Normally, he stands in the bowl and Beauty joins him on the right side of box.

She wasn't very interested, did not leave the box, so he brought it to her. After the second time, she took it and flew off.  He stuck around for several minutes, then flew off.

Very strange bonding session at 5:32pm.

Beauty chups like this when another falcon is around.  She is very distracted and watching something while DC was in the box. She's looking up and looking South

I saw something like this on the Columbus ledge when a 3rd falcon that looked like a juvie landed on the ledge during a bonding session.  Both Spark and Durand just chupped/chirped at the intruder. 

Beauty seemed to calm down after she got in the box & DC left.

She acts like she's on high alert and doesn't want to be trapped in the box.  Wonder if Pigott or another female is around... by watching both of them here, they seem to be seeing something "out there". She hasn't been spending much time, like in previous, years at the nest box and I wonder if this is throwing a wrench in the egg laying. She just acts strange to me.

The Aqueduct Building is the actual name of the building, and in fact that's what employees call it.  If you go to the rear entrance, by the small parking lot, you'll see there's a plaque on the side of the entrance that says "Aqueduct Building."

Lawyers Co-Op Publishing bought the Aqueduct Building in 1903, after having rented space there for several years. The Thomson Corporation bought Lawyers Co-Op in the early 1990s.  In the mid-1990s Thomson bought West Publishing, and the name of the company in the Aqueduct complex became West Group. A few years later the name was changed to Thomson West.  Then in 2008 Thomson bought Reuters, and the name of the company became Thomson Reuters.  However, through all these company name changes the name of the Aqueduct Building hasn't changed. 

I got it from Pat (Patsy6) who works there.

It's true that Thomson Reuters occupies the building.
