Title: Cathedral of Learning, Pittsburgh 2015
Post by: DebInTexas on 20-Mar-15, 03:42:20 PM
Any news on if this might be Dorothy back, or E2?  This is from today.

Dorothy has been hanging around the nest Deb. This is her!

Thanks Donna.  Maybe the Ole Girl still has it in her to produce.  I'm hoping last year was just a bad one for her and E2.

Yes, she's up there and maybe it's better if she doesn't lay eggs this year. Last year was so sad when she was egg bound! Bless her!!

I think it would be safer for Dorothy not to lay eggs this year. Becoming eggbound is life threatening, and I don't want to see her go through that again. I will be happy if she just stays healthy. She has already done more than her share to increase the peregrine population.

I have also been seeing a male at the nest, and I'm pretty sure it's E2.

I was really not expecting eggs here this year — and was amazed to see the egg a little while ago!

Talons crossed for everything to go well for Dorothy and E2 this year. What a remarkable pair! They deserve to have a successful year.

She just gave the baby a good feed at 12.40.  Baby was up, bright and alert and eating. I'm hopeful the wee one will make it.  Look at how long our kids didn't eat, what with DC or B bickering over food the first few hours.

Whew!  Thanks, Carly.  I know they can go a good while without being fed after hatching, but apparently there is some not so good history at that nestsite with that, so there was some concern.  Glad there is good news.

Yes I remember that back in 2013.  I recall it crawled away from her and she just left it there and didn't even try to get it back under her so she knew it wasn't well.  This little one - so far - looks and sounds good and she's keeping it tucked close to her.  Talons crossed, it stays healthy.

Dorothy's stats by Kate St. John

Various numbers were listed in the news articles. Here are Dorothy’s statistics:  At age 16 she has laid more than 55 eggs of which 44 have hatched and 42 have fledged (flown from the nest).  We don’t know the exact count of her eggs because her first nest was hidden.  This chick will be counted as her 43rd fledgling when it flies.

Seems there is concern for the little one:

Kate StJohn The chick's behavior does not look normal to me so I imagine it doesn't look normal to them. The chick will get a health check on Banding Day. Nothing to be done (by humans) until then.

Kate StJohn Note that Dorothy and E2 are very experienced parents & will do what is right for peregrines. Their offspring must become strong precision flyers & hunters to survive in the wild. They will teach this chick to do that if he/she is able.

Kate StJohn As I have said many times, Dorothy is 16 years old and her chances of producing a healthy chick are low. This chick might have a birth defect. We will not know until Banding Day

Kate StJohn Consider this: 2 years ago one of Dorothy's 2 chicks had a birth defect -- seizures -- and died within a week of hatch. The other one grew up and fledged.
It is possible that this chick has a birth defect that has taken longer to show up than for the chick in 2013 -- but that is mere speculation on my part. The chick will be examined and receive humans' medical attention on Banding Day

in my opinion the problem is with the chick, not with Dorothy. D is doing her best & is protecting the chick.

I'm a bit out of the loop on this how this whole thing came about as I've not been watching regularly but every time I do the chick looks fine to me.  It's been fed, brooded - extensively so by an over protective mom, and is growing.

Solo chicks as we know are always tough to watch, they don't have a sibling to lean on so they fall over alot especially when they're being stuffed silly and they've got those big feet to contend with.  Having watced Dorothy in years past, she's never been the type to use up energy caring for a chick that isn't well so I'm going to follow her cues and figure since she is caring for it with all her might - in her falcon mind, this chick is viable.

This above post by Kate was after all the concerns the day s(he) was on his back so long.  People started saying it was frail looking, walked on its elbows, can't sit up straight, etc.  I think it looks fine to me but Kate hasn't been optimistic since it was hatched plus she never thought Dorothy would lay eggs or hatch any..it was just a follow up to posted concerns.

I"m going to say it's a family thing - first our baby here, then Dorothy's and lest we not forget the Queen of laying on her back 'Miss Tesh'

But seriously, Dorothy is determined to stuff this chick silly - may I present Exhibit A (photo by Catwoman):

I'd be on my back too

Dorothy and E2 just fed the chick, on it's back.  Dorothy is now trying to flip it over, like she did yesterday.  The chick seems to be breathing okay and just wants to sleep (food coma).

:(  Well I feel bad now, I thought his being on his back a few times was like here, just brief and didn't seem to cause any lasting harm.  Didn't realize E2 fed him on his back tonight, I somehow don't think this is normal but then again what do I know.

Dorothy flipped the baby over finally.  She grabbed it's lwing and dragged it and gave it a toss and it flipped over.  I just hope it's not too late.

I don't care what anyone says, she must think this chick is somehow viable otherwise she'd have given up and let it die.  I wish they'd at least examine it before they pronounced it 'abnormal'.

Oh and she doesn't look old, she looks fantastic!!

One of it's leg's isn't right though, maybe all that kicking and pulling hurt it.  He tried to stand but can't seem to put pressure on the left leg.  It's out to the side now.  Okay he's pulled it in, he pooped which is good and now will hopefully sleep for a few hours.  Dorothy is much more relaxed now and on the perch looking proud of herself.

I'm so happy that it's upright again!  I hope its leg is OK..it was before, I think.  Maybe just a good night's rest will help.  Yay for Dorothy!

Banding is Friday.

Reading some comments on other sites, which aren't nice but some say the nest needs more gravel as the eyas keeps sliding when it tries to right it's self. I tend to agree, he has no footing and does slide a lot. I have grown fond of the little "eyas that could"!

I don't know how she could say its a "special needs" baby when no expert has physically examined him. It obviously has balance issues..ear mites? parasites? His right leg hasn't been normal since he laid on his back for 24 hrs..maybe with Dorothy trying to right it several times and stepping on him, he suffered an injury? They expected Dorothy to have an abnormal baby from the start so we're going to wait until Friday to examine the poor thing to see if he has any issues that could be treatable.

A letter written by a concerned citizen:
Pittsburg. I just received a nice and very detailed email from the PA Game Commission, including all the information and possibilities to help this little dear chick:
Le 28/05/2015 13:20, GM, Comments a écrit :
>
> You’re welcome. We recently received additional information from our peregrine falcon coordinator. Please see below:
We have been following the situation at the Peregrine Falcon nest at the University of Pittsburgh Cathedral of Learning very closely for several months, starting even before the eggs were laid. The lone chick (out of 4 eggs laid) is developmentally abnormal, due to the adult female’s extreme age. The female is 16 years old. Falcons who live to this age in the wild (which is rare) have reduced fertility and a heightened incidence of developmental defects in their chicks, if they even have chicks. That is what has been happening with this female for the last 3 years.
If there were anything we could do to help the chick, we would do it. For example, if the chick had an injury or a treatable disease, we would help it immediately, as we always do in such circumstances. But there is nothing we can do in this case.
In the mean time, the parents are taking care of the chick far better than any humans could. The chick is growing well, and although it is obviously very clumsy, there is no evidence that it is suffering. The best thing we can do for the chick right now is to leave it with its parents.
That situation may change in the near future. The chick will be 19 days old on Friday 5/29, and soon after that it will begin walking around in the nest, and there is the possibility that it could fall out of the nest, which would not be good, considering that the nest is on the 40th floor of the building.
We (PGC) and partners will visit the nest on Friday 5/29, a date that was chosen with the chick’s best interests in mind, and at that time, the chick will get a thorough exam by veterinarians and wildlife biologists. If it is determined that the chick may become at risk of falling out of the nest, and/or that it is unlikely to survive in the wild, we will remove the chick from the nest and take it to a wildlife rehabilitator for further analysis, and then to a permanent home where it can have a happy life in safety. That is the most likely outcome on Friday. Arrangements have already been made with a wildlife rehabilitator and a home. If the panel of wildlife experts determines that the chick does have a good chance of surviving well in the wild, we will return the chick to the nest after examining it on Friday, but that seems unlikely at this point.
At the present time, the best place for the chick, for its sake, is in the nest with its parents. In the near future, the best place for it may be with human caretakers. We will determine that, and act appropriately.
Thank you for your concern and for contacting us about this.

Update from Kate:

His sex is undetermined because he’s been slow in development – feathers and strength are at age 14 days – but he had no deformities and has a good change of catching up.

He did have feather parasites so he was treated with medication to remove them. So that problem virtually gone.

Blood test results for Jr.   Posted by Kate

Late yesterday I received this summary of the Pitt nestling’s blood test results from the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Some of you have expressed an interest in this information so I am posting it here.

“When examined on banding day, the nestling was found to be significantly infested with blood-sucking ectoparasites and was given appropriate treatment.

Blood tests conducted by Dr. Wagner revealed that the nestling was anemic, probably due to the ectoparasites, but the complete blood count (CBC) and blood chemistry results were within normal limits. The only abnormality was a low packed cell volume indicating anemia.

Tests for West Nile Virus, Avian Influenza Virus and internal parasites were negative.”

The blood sample was taken on Banding Day, 29 May 2015, at the Cathedral of Learning when the peregrine chick was 19 days old.

BCAW watchers had noticed a week or so ago that his right wing feathers are still in the shaft and haven't emerged making it hard for him to fully extend the wing.  Glad he's safe and, hopefully, he can fly free someday.  Dorothy did an awesome job for her age!    :notworthy:

This morning, the PA Game Commission brought a Peregrine Falcon fledgling from its nest in Oakland to our Wildlife Center for care. We have admitted it for medical evaluation, which will occur over the next several days. The bird does not have appropriate flight feathers and may have some neurological issues. It will remain under our care until decisions can be made in the bird's best interest. The Animal Rescue League will provide further updates on the falcon's medical condition and the future treatment plan once this is determined. If you would like to donate to help support the care of the falcon, please do so by visiting our website at www.animalrescue.org/donate (http://www.animalrescue.org/donate) and type “Falcon” in the notes section.

Update on Silver:

The Peregrine Falcon we received yesterday is settling in at our Wildlife Center. Upon initial exam, the bird was found to be dehydrated and thin. There are missing flight feathers, but new feather growth is apparent. In addition, one of the bird's feet is noticeably weaker than the other. The bird has an appointment with a specialty vet on Tuesday & we will pass along any information that is discovered at that time. To be clear, our hope & goal is to rehabilitate the falcon so that it may eventually be returned to the wild. Long term goals, treatments, and plans will be developing as our Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitators work alongside the Veterinarian."

Peregrine Update: Wildlife Center staff took the falcon to be examined by Dr. Robert Wagner yesterday evening. A complete physical examination was conducted. The formerly missing primary feathers are almost completely grown, but our licensed rehabilitators & the veterinarian agree that the bird displays neurological deficits. A blood sample was taken to gain insight on these inconsistencies. A test is also being conducted to rule out lead poisoning. Supportive care will continue as the test results are pending. The falcon will continue to be treated by Wildlife Center staff.

Peregrine Update: It's a boy! X-ray reports have revealed that the falcon is a male. We have also received the results from initial blood tests which have all been normal. We are still waiting for the reports from the lead test, but the bird is gaining weight & his flight feathers continue to grow. We will continue to provide public updates on the peregrine as soon as new information develops, but are unable to respond to individual inquiries about this patient.

Thank you so much for the update, Donna! I always thought Silver was male. The test results are encouraging, as is the fact that his feathers are continuing to come in and he is gaining weight. I wonder if they have considered testing for insecticides, pesticides or herbicides, all of which can cause seizures.

Little Silver is absolutely beautiful. I am sure he misses his Mom, and that she misses him. Dorothy did such an incredible job of caring for him every minute of every day.

I think he looks a little more settled and less scared than when he first arrived at the facility. And in the video he is balancing well on one foot.

How cute he is and Beauty has another brother! When he was on his back all those times, flailing his legs in the air, people were calling it seizures but it wasn't. He was simply trying to right himself and get off his back.  To my knowledge, he never fell over onto his back again once he was treated for all the blood-sucking parasites. Their concern was he has "neurological issues", weakness in the left leg/foot, so he was going to be seen by a specialized avian vet to see if it could be determined what the problem is but I've never read how that exam went.

From the University of Pittsburgh Times:

JULY 9, 2015
CL chick moved to wildlife center

The CL peregrine chick is being cared for at the wildlife center.

The peregrine falcon chick that hatched this spring from the Cathedral of Learning nest is displaying neurological deficits and receiving “supportive care” at the Animal Rescue League Wildlife Center & Shelter, where it will remain indefinitely.

Center director Jill M. Argall said the bird is being given “every possible chance” to be released to the wild, but no decisions have been made. “We’re considering it a long-term rehab patient until it proves otherwise,” she said.

A game commission officer brought the peregrine fledgling to the wildlife rehab center on June 25 after it was found outside Hillman Library. “When it arrived it was emaciated and dehydrated,” Argall said. It was missing some secondary and covert feathers, which affected its ability to fly.

Those feathers have since begun to grow in, she said. Of greater concern, however, is its lack of beak-eye coordination. A veterinary exam revealed no apparent visual impairment, but the bird “misses” when it reaches for food, she said. “If it were in the wild now, it would not survive.”

An exam when the bird was banded in May found some weakness in one of the bird’s feet (see June 11 University Times). Argall said that although the bird is perching, the foot remains weak, which could interfere with its ability to live in the wild. Because peregrines hunt by catching small birds in flight, “they need both sets of talons,” Argall said.

The chick’s neurological deficits are suspected to have a developmental cause, but the center is awaiting the results of blood tests for toxins such as lead. A chemical cause isn’t suspected, “but we’re covering all bases,” she said.

For now, the bird is being hand-fed and living in a large indoor enclosure. Argall said the approach to its care is “wait and see, day by day.” As the bird progresses, it will be offered larger chunks of food or given the opportunity to feed itself, she said. “We’re letting the bird show us what it can do.”

Argall said the center has received requests from people wanting to visit the bird, but the facility isn’t open to visitors. Those interested in the bird’s progress can find updates on the peregrine by “liking” the Animal Rescue League Center & Shelter Facebook page.

Sad news about Silver. Find the silver lining, he'd never have lived this long in the wild. The first jump from the cliff would have left him vulnerable to predation.

Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center
Peregrine Update: It is with heavy hearts that we must share the news of the passing of the Peregrine Falcon we accepted from the Cathedral of Learning. After weeks with little change to its status, the bird experienced a sudden drop in weight - despite routine hand feedings & daily weight monitoring. After discovering signs of a respiratory illness on Saturday morning, a staff member rushed the falcon to an emergency clinic in Cleveland to see avian specialist Dr. Jamie Lindstrom. Dr. Lindstrom is renowned for his knowledge & experience with wild birds, having authored numerous academic articles & speeches, as well as serving in leadership roles in several avian organizations. While receiving top-notch care at the hospital, the falcon passed away. Dr. Lindstrom felt strongly that the illness was linked to the animal being developmentally delayed, immunosuppressed, & a failure to thrive & diagnosed him with a chronic pulmonary obstructive disease. Unfortunately, there was nothing further that any of the doctors could do. The staff of the Animal Rescue League thank you for your support & well wishes throughout this process. May the Peregrine's spirit fly, free of the burdens that plagued him during his short life.

OH that poor baby!! Fly Free little Silver, you gave it your best!!!    :crying:

Very sad but not entirely unexpected. Dorothy may be old but she did an excellent job caring for this chick. I feel bad for them all. Silver would never have developed normally despite all the care he received from his parents and rehabbers, so I'm relieved that he is no longer suffering.

He touched so many lives in his far too short life, and he will never be forgotten.

Such sad news about Silver, after the ups and downs, and final cautious optimism that he might possibly recover enough to become a well-cared-for "ambassador." Silver and his parents, as well as all of the humans involved, did their very best for a good outcome. Although his life was brief, he did indeed make his mark. Farewell little one. :(
