Title: Unbanded Juvenile Peregrine at Kodak Park on the Research Lab Bldg - 8/6/09
Post by: Carol P. on 06-Aug-09, 09:36:42 PM
You're not going to believe this.  But tonite at 7:30 pm, a Falcon flew up and around and around the Research Lab Bldg at KP, finally landing on the SW corner.  I quickly got out my scope and was surprised to see that it was a juvenile Peregrine and she (yes, I believe it was a she) was unbanded.  She also had a very full crop.

She was a beautiful, light color.  Like Aura and Sacajawea.  She sat on the corner for about an hour (7:30-8:30 pm), then took off heading south east over the gorge.

Earlier, during the hour, an adult Peregrine Falcon flew over, heading north east over the gorge.  Mariah???  The juvie watched the adult pass over with great interest and no vocalization.

I have to wonder if she's begging for food from Mariah???  That's just a suspicion.  It's documented that roaming juveniles will beg from other adults.

I'm having fun keeping an eye on KP and the Merrill St folks are happy to look through the scope.

Now, I'm getting really excited.  Of course, you guys have reported other falcons in the other area before.

Yup, the scope is a really big attraction and a great way to get folks interested in the falcons.  (or eagles)  It's also a great way to make new friends.

 :surprise:

I can believe that Mariah would "mother" that Juvie, she has always been a GREAT Mother.

Here's a video of the juvie flying around the Research Lab Bldg.  The annoying beeping in the background is coming from my car.  That'll teach me to leave my door open with the keys in the ignition.  LOL

Enjoy!

Carol, I can't stop laughing at the car beeping.  That juvie seems to be having a lot of fun flying around.  Can we assume it's a juvie born in May-ish and who recently fledged?  I don't actually know when falcons turn from brown to their adult coloring.

Wow, and unbanded.  Is this another circle of life moment?  A new unbanded female comes to Rochester?

P.S.: Now I know why all the posters have gone smiley crazy.  To those of you who haven't posted, once you get to the posting screen it fairly screams at you to start adding smileys.  It's very, very tempting to try a new one....

Carol is that really your car beeping, or is it your mockingbird friend?

Nice video!  You did a fine job of tracking.
I wonder whether she was hatched in the Rochester area?  In any case, you have sown me something I never expected to see this year - a juvenile peregrine in Rochester.

Now that bird looks like 'our' kids on Water St. and in Jersey City!!  The juvie looks like it is trying to land, but can't find quite the right spot.  They 'found' another new pair in Jersey, just north of JC.

So... there's the question - where are the nearest falcon nesting spots from which the juveniles are not banded?

Carol,
I wonder if this means the falcons have really started to "move".  If so, let's hope a dashing and handsome male wanders through the area soon!

That's tough to answer because the closest spots may not be known to us, which is why the eyases were not banded.

Yes, I know.I thought there might be a place or two where they are not banded due to difficulty of access even though folks know where they are.

It might be nice to see if Mariah takes on this Juvie. She has been through so much and that may make her feel whole again...(now that is what I think )  ;) I will watch video tonight! Great eye!

:paperbag:  The unknown juvie was on the research lab bldg at Kodak Park again this afternoon, but not for long.  S/he was being bugged by a bee and soon took off.  Also, saw 4 Red-tail Hawks.  No Mariah. :star:

The entire route from Niagara Falls to and including the NYS Thruway was heavy with RTH.  May have seen a Kestral just over the border in Canada!

Uh, I may sound a bit naive but...could Mariah still be around this year, mated, and this juvie be hers?
