Title: Buffalo Falcon News 2016
Post by: AlisonL on 23-Feb-16, 06:12:12 PM
The Buffalo cams are back up today, with the addition of a third cam showing an outside view of the ledge.

Can't read the bands, but I hope this is Yankee.

So it's Rhea Mae and Tiago's boy!!!!!

Edit to add:  another branch to add to the family tree Kitty!

Good news!  I wish I could get this cam.

The cam doesn't work for me in Firefox. It will only work for me in IE, and even then, it will run for a minute or two and then stop. At that point I have to go out of the site and back in to get it to work again.

I don't know if that will work for you, but it might possibly be worth a try.

I can get it on IE in my craft area computer downstairs but I spend 90% of my time on my iPad and that's Safari.

Some serious concerns about the health of both Dixie and Yankee apparently, Peregrine Place has just posted about it as viewers have seen them both panting heavily and not incubating at times:

Yankee came to relieve Dixie and she took off like a shot.  He seems fine in comparison, very alert..no panting yet that I can see.  He's tight on eggs right now...will keep watching.

Posted on FB-

NEWS ALERT: UB The DEC has just informed me that it is accepted that the eggs are no longer viable and they will be removed from the box.and  sent to a lab for analysis. It is being planned for tomorrow if everything else is completed today.

Our DEC had to coordinate with UB, the head Wildlife Mgr, get permission from  the Albany DEC  and the USFWS in Cortland. Nothing could be done before that.

Of course this is very sad for us but at least the birds will no longer have to keep incubating non-viable eggs. The nest box will be checked to try and determine the cause of this year’s problems. I will post any information as it come in.

On a good note for our Peregrine watchers, we have the great Statler cam to follow and I think there is a crack in one egg which I’ve seen to the left.

Hope they find out whatever was causing the adults to appear overheated while incubating in the box..a sad ending to another season for this great pair.  :'(

Friends in NY wanted to see how Defiant (Peregrine Falcon) is doing. Here she is - almost done with her molt and looking pretty!

BB (now known as Defiant) hatched at the Whittier Apartments in Detroit in 2007. She nested in NY at the University of Buffalo and Richardson Towers. She is now an education bird in Arizona. Looking good BB/Defiant!

Feel bad for her but at least she is alive!! She does look great!

Just posted to Peregrine Place a few minutes ago...RIP Sweet Dixie  :crying: :crying: :crying:

I am so sad. This is a bad week for us in Buffalo. Grab your tissues before reading on. Our Dixie, Yankee's mate at UB was in a stoop for a pigeon this afternoon, but struck a car instead. This happened at Bailey and Winspear. I was there twice today, seeing Yankee tucked into a corner near the cornices to stay warm, but Dixie was not in view. She could have been in the box though. I came back from Central Terminal, going through Bailey and Winspear probably just before Dixie tragic event. Connie will have her mounted at some point.

For what it's worth, the Buffalo cams are back online. I wish this had happened some time ago, so that we could have seen Dixie and Yankee together at the nest. Now, with the tragic loss of Dixie, it is much too late.

It bothers me that for the last two years of her life, Dixie was deprived of raising chicks. In 2015, her chicks were taken from her due to renovations at the heating plant, and this year possible toxins from something used in that construction may perhaps have been the reason that none of her nine eggs hatched.  :(

No one was at the nest when I checked. This is one of the cam sites which only worked in IE (and just barely). I just tried it in IE and Firefox (version 50.1.0) and it worked in both.

New unbanded female at nest bowing to Yankee this morning, I posted some photos to Peregrine Place just now.  Her legs bare and I got enough of his band to positively ID him.  Both still there now, she's peeking around the corner.

Edit to add:  I wonder if they are sure the female they picked up was Dixie?  This female looks like Dixie - they both have a heart shape on the side... I'd need more photos to be sure but she's awfully 'at home' here for a newbie and she was scraping too.
