NE Florida Eaglet Rescue Memo
Early Friday -February 10, 2017 - The American Eagle Foundation (AEF) plans to retrieve the eaglet "Peace" from its wild nest in Northeast Florida.
On February 6, 2017, AEF NEFL Remote Camera Operators alerted AEF officials Al Cecere and Gretchen Butler about the balance problems the 7 week old eaglet was exhibiting. After closely monitoring the eaglet via live streaming nest cams for hours, we noticed black monofilament (commonly used for fishing) wrapped around the left foot, including the hallux. Shortly after the discovery of the fishing line, the female parent "Juliet" appeared to be pulling and tugging on a clump of moss while going after a piece of food, and it is believed that the parent had removed the line from the eaglet's foot.
Once the fishing line was identified, AEF immediately began talking to USFWS and making plans to rescue Peace. We were beyond excited that this problem seemed to have been resolved without the need for human intervention, which is rather rare when fishing line enters a nest. So, thereafter, our plans were to continue to monitor the eaglet, but then a storm rolled through the area knocking power out for almost 24 hours. The electricity was restored on February 8, at which time it was immediately noticed that Peace was still having significant balance problems.
A decision was made on the evening of February 8 to continue plans for the rescue, which will hopefully take place early in the morning on February 10, 2017 - at which time our cams will be taken offline.
Peace will be taken to the Audubon Raptor Center for a complete medical checkup and assessment.
More updates to follow. PLEASE do not call Audubon requesting information or updates, those will be delivered by AEF.

:(  Here's praying Peace will be OK!

From the site:

NE Florida Eaglet Rescue Memo

Update: 12:30 PM EST February 10, 2017

Rescue of eaglet “Peace” this morning was successful, and both “Peace” and “Hope” were unharmed. “Peace” was taken to vet clinic for radiograph and blood tests. Nothing serious was detected upon examination on-site by Al Cecere and Audubon vet technician, Sam. No fishing line was found in the nest. Updates will be posted as they become available.

This report is encouraging so far. Hoping everything goes well for both eaglets.

Peace is being checked over at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey.

The eaglet has landed. Bald Eaglet No. 051 -2017 arrived from the AEF eagle cam nest and is under evaluation. No fractures were discovered.

This afternoon's update on Peace, from the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey:

AEF-NEFL Here is our "Star", Peace, on the scale this morning at Audubon weighing in at 5.74 pounds. We believe Peace to be a small male with good weight for a 7 wk eaglet. Blood work has been done and sent, and the gender will be confirmed in approximately one week. We do already have some results and blood test proved no lead. Peace's ears indicated no blood present and checked out fine. The radiographs were perfect, and muscles were felt and appeared good. Peace could move both feet in a normal fashion as well as open talons. At this point there appears to be a possible injury to the right leg, and we are waiting on additional results from blood work conducted. Otherwise there appears to be no other problems. Audubon is working closely with AEF and quickly providing updates we will share as available.

A fairly general update today from the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey:

Why is Peace at Audubon?

Many people have asked why Peace the eaglet from the American Foundation nest cam was removed from the nest. It was noticed that Peace had been struggling with balance issues and was having difficulty standing and moving around in the nest. Because this nest has a nest cam his/her progress has been closely monitored by American Eagle Foundation and the local Audubon eagle watchers. The decision to remove this eaglet from the nest was decided upon by Federal agencies (USFWS) after the bird's condition was reported to them. This was not an easy decision and was discussed heavily by all parties involved. Audubon Center for Birds of Prey was asked to assist with the eaglet's removal from the nest, medical treatment and care. Peace is now recovering at the Center receiving pain medication and any needed therapy to help her regain her balance. We do not at this time know when she/he will be reunited with its family.

The Center aids in the recovery and rehabilitation of many eagles every year with 101 admitted in 2015 and 71 admitted last year. 20-30% of the eagles admitted each year are babies that need care.

What a sweet face Peace has! He does not seem unduly stressed in a strange environment.

A small update from AEF posted last night:

Latest update on Peace from Gretchen earlier - Eating more on own at night but still hand feeding as well. We've been feeding a variety of food including fish, rodents, and chicken. He's gained some weight (a little over 6lbs now).

We all want to know if and when Peace will return to the nest.

It's too early to tell, and we just don't have an answer. The good thing is he is getting care, and we are in no hurry for his return until and unless he is ready to be released from Audubon's care. Please check updates as posted.

AEF-NEFL UPDATE ON PEACE: "It's a boy!" Yes, the Audubon clinic confirmed Peace is male through blood results just received. They pushed him a little harder on his physical therapy today, and they are still working on his balance issue, but he's doing well!

They had said at one point he had an apparent leg injury but nothing after that. :confused0083:

The two most recent updates I have seen on Peace:

UPDATE ON PEACE: Audubon is treating Peace as a most special patient within a mew (enclosure) inside their clinic. Peace is doing ok. He did some PT walking around this morning. Peace is still hesitant with right foot but can stand and put weight on it.

They continue to test blood every 48 hrs and are closely monitoring him to rule out anything neurological. He is eating and gaining small amounts of weight every day since he was admitted on Friday, February 10. However his diagnosis is still unknown.

Please understand we will not speculate on what is or what is not wrong with Peace. We will only communicate the facts provided by Audubon as results are given. Al Cecere and I are the interface for AEF, and all information is given directly to us from Audubon. Our moderators (both in our chat rooms as well as in our Facebook pages) have no further information. We appreciate your understanding, patience, and well-wishes as we allow Audubon to do their job without our interruption. Please understand we are concerned about Peace as you are, but we know Peace is in good hands at Audubon and receiving the best care possible.

And this one:

Update Feb. 20, 2017

As viewed today, Peace was shy when he first came out of his mew, but quickly pranced around the clinic at Audubon for his PT exercise. He is progressing well and weighed in at 6.5 lbs. He was later feasting (behind closed doors in his mew) on his breakfast. Earlier updates confirmed that Peace is a male eaglet! Peace is a most special patient at Audubon with his own special mew (enclosure) inside their clinic. There is still no specific diagnosis yet.

Meanwhile, Hope has started branching, and a couple of nights ago she was sleeping standing up on the edge of the nest with head in feathers just like her Mom, who was up above her in the nest tree.

A new update on Peace this morning from the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey:

AEF-NEFL Peace Update! Good News... Peace is progressing into the flight at Audubon on Friday. They have constructed an elevated nest platform lined with natural, similar nest material he was used to. They will continue to feed Peace three times a day disguised behind a black curtain. There is one mature male eagle in the flight that is non-flighted who will act as a mentor for Peace. This eagle will encourage Peace and create a sense of normalcy as Peace observes him. Audubon knew something was wrong with Peace, but they do not have a specific diagnosis. The reason for his imbalance may never be known, but it is improving. This step transferring Peace into the flight is very reassuring and a positive step forward.

From FB-

AEF-NEFL Here's Peace just placed in his nest platform inside the 100' x 25' x 20' flight cage outside at Audubon. Peace had a shower today and groceries were left! He will remain there and take flight when he's ready. We look forward to his release in the nest area when Audubon declares him ready.  Until then we will be able to view Peace on a live cam that will stream starting next week!  Here is the link:  www.acfbop.org (http://www.acfbop.org)  We will post when the cam is live.

An encouraging update on Peace today:

Update Feb. 26, 2017

You can view Peace live at www.acfbop.org (http://www.acfbop.org). Peace has a nest approximately 3 feet off the ground on the right side of Cam 2. It was placed there to allow Peace to be with the other eagle in the flight barn. He will remain there and take flight when he's ready. Audubon staff has seen a considerable improvement in Peace’s behavior/activity since he was moved to the flight cage on Friday late afternoon. He is eating well and even begging the other eagle to feed him! His world is better and will soon be even better! We look forward to his release in the nest area when Audubon declares him ready.

The other view of Hope fledging; it's distant, but it does show her flying strongly.

Stay safe, beautiful eaglet!

Hope has not returned to the nest, nor has she been seen since she fledged six days ago. I hope she will turn up safe somewhere in the very near future.

An update on Peace and Bob:

Update on  "Bob" (flight mate with Peace at Audubon)

The non-flighted, adult, male Bald Eagle Audubon reference number 709-16 was recently removed from the flight because Peace wanted to be near him and the adult can not fly. The adult was a good choice and did a great job of being a surrogate to Peace, but Peace has progressed and Audubon wants to encourage Peace to work on his flight abilities, which Peace was not doing while the adult was in there.

Bob was moved to a smaller flight nearby. Once Peace flies and lands on the top perches (15' high on each end of the flight), his confidence level will change and nothing will stop him. Then Peace's release will be right around the corner!

He was and both Peace and Hope are being seen, by watchers,  flying well.  They haven't said whether the parents are aware of Peace though.

Romeo and Juliet have both returned to their nest, Romeo on August 26 and Juliet on August 27. They have already begun bringing in sticks for their nest.

Yesterday the cameras were activated. Only Cam 3 works for me at the moment, but perhaps Cams 1 and 2 are working for others.

I hope everyone in Florida will be able to stay safe during the hurricane, along with Romeo and Juliet, Harriet and M15 and all wildlife. Also all the wildlife rescue and rehab organizations and all their patients.

I can get both all cams right now, Alison.  I also hope all people, animals and wildlife are able to stay safe. I have many family members on the west coast of Florida, near Tampa, and my dad lives in Ocala so I have concerns as I'm sure others on here have as well.

Romeo was on the nest this afternoon when Juliet returned and started pecking him on the head. Romeo tried to avoid her beak, but Juliet had decided it was her turn on the nest, so he reluctantly left.

Juliet fed little NE18, who ate the fish with enthusiasm and has a great appetite. He/she is a very beautiful little eaglet.
