Title: Buffalo Falcons News - 2017
Post by: Carol P. on 25-Mar-17, 09:28:00 PM
Lisa McK, Kathy O, Dana and I spent this rainy day in Buffalo checking out their nest sites. This what we saw.

Central Terminal: Two falcons were very active there. Hunting, eating and doing a whole lot of flying. They visited the nest box, but didn't spend a lot of time there. Pretty sure the female was banded with a black over black band. Probably Gleig with a new mate. Could not tell if the new male is banded or not. Probably no eggs yet.

University of Buffalo: Two falcons seen. Male was carrying food. Female had full crop. Could not positively ID as Yankee and Dixie. Spent a lot of time at nest box and on tower. No way to know if they have eggs.

Statler: There was an event this afternoon, so we were only able to stop for a quick look. One falcon was at the nest box.

Richardson:  Two very vocal falcons there. Lots of flying and spending time at their nest box. Possible eggs.

All seems to be peaceful at the Buffalo nest sites.

Thank you so much for your excellent report, Carol. It's good to know that everything seems calm in Buffalo.

Carol, thank you so much for the report! And given the location of the Statler, weekends can be brutal trying to find our birds! I went last weekend and got totally messed up in all the St Patrick's Day traffic jams.
Did you check the old Holcim, now CHR? That site is perfect and has a cam but so far, no activity.

Hi Sage! Hope all is well with you.

I'm afraid we didn't have a chance to check out CHR. Next time.

It was our first visit to Richardson. Boy are they a vocal pair!

We were happy to see both falcons on cam at Statler this morning.

I don't watch this site often but is there something wrong with that smaller eyas?  It seems very weak and unsteady..maybe hatched later than others?  It's on its back and parent is oblivious.

Well, just looked and it's ok now...parent is shielding it.

Yes he hatched almost 2 days after the the other 3 and he barely gets any food when it's feeding time.  He takes a few bites when he does and he's down.  He is growing though, he's just not aggressive compared to the other three.  Hopefully he'll be okay.. :(

There is a similar situation at Columbus this year as well, same thing - 4th one not very aggressive and not getting enough to eat and looking very weak.

Often times they do, others times they don't make it.  I know at some sites I've seen them take the smallest out at banding and keep him back and foster them at a nest with only 1 or 2 kids as the older ones just get more aggressive as they grow.  He's being out competed for food...Dixie does try, I've seen her try to give him bites but sometimes they are too big for him and so the larger kid grabs it.

Yankee's black band is on his right leg instead of his left which is consistent with your photo above Alison - I see the USFW on the left leg  :)

I know that Yankee's black band is on his right leg. I also caught a glimpse of it as he moved around while I was watching him, but decided not to post those images because the quality was so poor. Yankee's silver band on the left leg is visible in the first pic I posted.

For those who don't know - Yankee got his foot stuck in the nest box the other day and it took him hours to get out.  His foot is badly injured and he's laying in the nest box right now.  He can fly but he could hardly stand up the other day and had to his wings to get up.  Very similar to Archer back in the day. It's hard to watch but he can fly so DEC can't get to him unless he goes to ground.   :crying:

Dixie is on the perch yelling at him, she wants food and mating as her hormones are driving her.  That new box has been nothing but trouble since they put it up there.  Imagine babies in there now and they got their talons stuck in there!

Post by: carly on 22-Mar-18, 07:19:40 PM
Dixie got tired of yelling and left.  Saw him hop up on one leg for a minute but he's back laying down.

Edit to add:  Dixie did eventually come back and he tried to stand but couldn't.  After awhile he literally jumped out of the box or threw himself over more like it and flew off.  No doubt off to somewhere safe as darkness fell.  Dixie still on perch.

9.20 am and Yankee may be on the egg.  Dixie flew off, my browser crashed and by the time I got it back up and running someone was on the egg.  Can't tell from this angle if it's him but Sage is saying he limped in and took over...that would be awesome!

Edit to add:  Yankee confirmed!  Yay!  He tried to stand a second and couldn't but he looks better than yesterday.
