Title: Pittsburgh Gulf Tower Cam-Louie and Dori 2018
Post by: Kris G. on 28-Apr-18, 04:41:14 PM
Louie (Beauty's brother) and Dori decided to nest on a downtown building again this year and not on Gulf Tower. They have 4 two week old eyases.  I read this today on FB :tickedoff:
NEWS ALERT:
It's come to our attention that the nesting season for the Downtown Peregrine pair may be over sooner than we all think!
A development project of BET Investments next to the building where the 3rd Avenue nest is located has decided to obtain a United States Fish and Wildlife Service permit to remove the 4 chicks, who are only 2 weeks old. The permit is within the parameters of the newly relaxed Federal rules related to migratory birds.
The chicks are to be taken from their parents and raised at a rehabilitation facility somewhere.
Louie, Dori, and the chicks just need about another month for them to fledge and leave the nest forever.
We urge you to contact BET investments to express your displeasure and to urge them to delay the removal of our peregrines.

Another way you can express your opinion is by picketing the construction site across the street from 319 3rd avenue. Do not block the street or sidewalks.

Thanks for the info..I guess I didn’t realize that Dori & O’Connor were sisters.  I’m emailing too as they deserve the chance to raise & fledge their young.  :(

Yes they are.  She was originally named 'Mary Cleo' when she was banded but they renamed her when she arrived in Pittsburgh.

Where were they hatched from?

Akron, Ohio.  Parents were Bandit and Chesapeake.  Chesapeake (died in 2014 at age 16) was one of the longest lived falcons in Ohio - she and Bandit (he died in 2012) and then Mckinley produced a total of 53 offspring.

Ok, I think I remember that now.  I wonder why they changed her name?

I will quote Kate's blog as she explained it at the time.

Since Monday the fervent peregrine watchers at Make-A-Wish, whose offices are near the nest, suspected Tasha was gone forever.  They’ve been Tasha’s fans for many years and were sad about this turn of events, so they wanted to honor the new female with a happy, hopeful name.  Even before they knew her identity they called her Dori, which means “wish” in Romanian.

And here is post from back then :  https://www.birdsoutsidemywindow.org/2010/03/25/new-female-peregrine-at-gulf-tower/ (https://www.birdsoutsidemywindow.org/2010/03/25/new-female-peregrine-at-gulf-tower/)

They are getting lots of press involved, here's just one!

Developer seeks to relocate young falcons from downtown nest

Officials say a developer is seeking permission from the federal government to remove four young peregrine falcons from their nest on a downtown Pittsburgh building.

Kate St. John, who monitors the nesting of peregrines in the area, says on her "Outside My Window" blog that the two-week-old birds are nesting near another building being redeveloped for student apartments.

St. John says there have been reports of the parent birds buzzing the workers.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the Pennsylvania Game Commission says in a letter sent Friday to local peregrine monitors that such nests are protected, but exemption requests can be granted.
The letter says the removal request is "within the parameters" of existing laws and regulations, but adds that "the chicks' health and well-being is our primary interest."

Information from: Tribune-Review, http://triblive.com (http://triblive.com)

I hope this stalls them until they fledge! Of course the parents are going to buzz anyone going near!  :stupid:

This didn't work for MK and their nest but maybe we can help save these 4 babies!

Here's some way to help voice your anger:

You got that right Kris.  Doesn't matter who is in power, if you have money they can be bought..the only thing that sets them apart is how high you have to go in price to buy them.

It's always one excuse or another for why they have to hurt wildlife and destroy the environment.  They minute you say yes to a situation like this you open the door to every other greedy developer to line up with their cheque book.  No one has integrity anymore - it's all about money.

If I had the $$, I'd override that POC......(and it ain't CARP)!  WE.......US humans have destroyed just about every habitat for these animals. Look at the bears, they shoot them for walking into the public's eye, same with deer, they have NO place to go because of the greed WE, not all, have for the taste for the green! Shame on that developer for having no compassion! I swear, I need Xanax after these stories! Feel so bad for that falcon family. I wish them well!  :crying: pfft, I'm done!

I saw that, it's disgraceful but not surprising.  I hope Dori and Louie will recover okay and don't get hurt.  Sad how they don't even consider their feelings or that it may be his last brood given he's getting up there.

Two of the four chicks died at the rehab facility. The cause of their deaths was unknown, but the Game Commission said one chick had parasitic lesions on its lungs and it is possible both chicks died from infections. The Game Commission said chick mortality is not uncommon, and about half of all birds die before fledging.  :(

Beauty's older brother Louie was found deceased yesterday, he was 17 years of age.  It's just a mention in this blog but Kate says she will do a tribute to him in a separate post.  He and his mate Dori (O'Connor's sister) produced 5 babies this year.

From Kate's Blog:  Remembering Louie: 2002 – 2019

In late June, after five young peregrines fledged from Pittsburgh’s Third Avenue nest, their father Louie was found dead at age 17. He was exceptionally old for a wild peregrine but longevity was in his genes.

Louie hatched in 2002, the son of Dorothy and Erie during their first successful year at the Cathedral of Learning. Dorothy fledged 43 young at Pitt before she disappeared at age 15.5.

Dorothy was the daughter of Sibella and Bill who were both part of The Peregrine Fund‘s Midwest Peregrine Recovery Program. Sibella nested at the First Wisconsin Building in Milwaukee through her 15th year. With a long-lived mother and grandmother it’s no wonder Louie made it to 17.

Louie started breeding early. In 2003 he was one year old when he won Pittsburgh’s Downtown territory. It was a tumultuous spring with two females and two males vying for the Gulf Tower nest. In the end Louie fought and killed Boris at the nestbox and became Tasha’s mate.

From 2003-2009 Louie fledged 24 young with Tasha. In her last breeding year he was especially protective of her on Banding Day.

The next year, 2010, was Louie’s chance to shine. In late March Dori defeated Tasha and became a first-time parent. Louie showed her the ropes as described in the links below:

-Tasha laid 2 eggs before Dori defeated her on 20 March 2010.
-Louie courted Dori at the nest (video) and kept his 2 eggs viable while Dori got in synch to lay 3 of her own.
-Once incubation began Louie lured Dori off the nest at night so that he could incubate: April 7 and April 8.
-In May, all five eggs hatched!

Louie was versatile. In their years together he and Dori moved their nest from year to year using three sites to fledge 39 young.

In 2012 they chose a cubbyhole on 3rd Avenue where they’ve nested 5 times. In 2015 they nested at Macy’s Annex. In 2014 and 2017 they returned to the Gulf Tower.

2018 ended sadly at Third Avenue when the Keystone Flats development was granted a Special Takings Permit and had their chicks removed. This year they were back at Third Avenue to raise and fledge five young. Louie was a good dad to the end.

All told Louie fathered 63 young peregrines. Like his mother Dorothy, Louie was the head of a dynasty.
