Title: Sabrina/Valiant (2006) Found injured in East Aurora, NY - 1/23/12
Post by: Dumpsterkitty on 11-Jun-10, 09:34:14 PM
I saw this on CPF...

!!! Zanar has been located, and with her new family of four!
June 11, 2010 - New York - Prescott-Ogdensburg Bridge
CPF Postmaster Reports:

We have just received some great news from Mary Beth down in New York state.
She has been closely monitoring the nesting activities of the Ogdensburg bridge peregrines and in addition to finding out that the pair have in fact produced four hatchlings this year, and nesting on the Canadian side,,, she has been able to identify the band number of the resident adult female!
I just checked the band number against our records and we have been able to positively identify the identity of the resident adult female as being named “ Zanar”,, produced at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Ottawa Ontario on 2004, banded Black 69 over Black K, with a sliver USFW band # 168705686

Zanar was banded at 25 days old, 920 grams – (empty crop weight), June 11th 2004
Thanks You Mary Beth!

Do we know if "Sabrina"/Valiant is still the tiercel there?

I do hope we can confirm that it's still him!  It would be SO great if 2 (that we know of) of the 3 survivors of that awful year Mariah was injured are thriving!

!!! Zenar is back with a mate and currently incubating 4 eggs!
May 06, 2011 - New York - Prescott-Ogdensburg Bridge
CPF Postmaster Reports:

While we haven’t had any news from Mary Beth for some time, it has been reported by Eve that Zanar (hatched in Rochester NY in 2006) and her mate are currently incubating 4 eggs again this year on the bridge. We are to understand that they are currently being monitored by Mary Beth Warburton from New York State. We do not know which site of the bridge the birds have set up house on this year - (the Canadian or American side) and have no idea as to when the eggs were laid adn when ful time incubation started.
We can only hope that the final out come is better than last year!
Hopefully we’ll receive some news of the happenings.
Stay tuned…..

Who is Zanar? Do they mean Valiant/Sabrina??? Can someone find out? If it is Valiant.....OMG!!! Finally some male news!  Zanar and HER mate!! Very confusing!

Zanar (69/K B/B 2004 Ottawa, ON Crowne Plaza Hotel) is the female Valiant/Sabrina was with 2009 & 2010.

Hopefully it's still them!

Spell Check!  Valient s/b Valiant.

Description!

 1.
boldly courageous; brave; stout-hearted: a valiant soldier.

2.
marked by or showing bravery or valor; heroic: to make a valiant effort.

3.
worthy; excellent.

Hope they are all mixed up and it is still our Sabrina aka Valiant.

We still arent sure of the mate, but we know there has been a hatch,a banding was planned, but the young already started to run all over the beams of the bridge,so it is not possible to band them at this time. Hopefully we can band them if they come down during fledging.  I will confirm with Mark the number of hatches.

More Facts: 1687-01184 was assigned to Juliet from Syracuse in 2005.  Back then DEC was using the USFW 1687 for females.  That year, there were 4 females in Syracuse.  They were all given *2/alpha letter just as those in Rochester.

Because numbers carry over from year to year, and Rochester was banded on same day before Syracuse, it is a possibility that 1687-01185 could have been used in Rochester the following year. Back then, females were black over red and they were given the 1687 band.

Can anyone confirm the USFW band number for Sabrina?

Title: Re: Sabrina???
Post by: carly on 25-Jan-12, 08:54:05 PM
I hope it's not your Sabrina.  I found this tidbit when trying to search on banding protocols as I know they do reuse letter/numbers.  From the Ohio Pefa site:  http://ohiodnr.com/wildlife/dow/falcons/faq.aspx (http://ohiodnr.com/wildlife/dow/falcons/faq.aspx)

"When a symbol appears sideways on a band, it is represented in writing by an asterisk (*). Therefore, on the band in the photo the Y is sideways and so is written as *Y/5.

This is done to increase the number of possible combinations of letters and numbers on these special color bands.

Thus, more falcons can be banded with a particular combination of color fields (like "black over green") before new colored bands are needed."

The 2005 banding in Rochester was on June 2.  Sabrina's banding was on June 1, 2006.  I don't know whether Rochester has ever had a June 6 banding. It's sad when any of these guys meets an untimely end, but there just seem to be too many differences in  band code and banding day for it to have been Sabrina.

Post by: Carol P. on 25-Jan-12, 11:33:45 PM
I've emailed Sage to please check with Connie from the DEC to verify how the M/T Red/Black is placed on the "color" band.

If it's M/T straight up, it is not Sabrina.  If it's M/T (T tipped to the left), it probably is Sabrina.

As someone stated below, there are all different variations in how the letters/#'s are placed on a band.

Sabrina/Valiant was banded on June 1, 2006, along with Rhea Mae and Aura.  Rhea Mae and Sabrina received the last of the red/black bands that Mike Allen, DEC had.  Aura was banded with a green/black band.

Hopefully we'll hear back soon from Sage.

My records show he nested twice in Ogdensburg with Zanar (69/K B/B 2004 Crowne Plaza Ottawa) 2009 & 2010.  I'm not sure how many hatches there were in 2009, but I have them marked as not surviving to fledge.  There were 4 hatches in 2010 and no reports of fatalities. There were no reports that anyone was able to find for 2011.

So there were 3 potential additional nesting years somewhere unobserved.  That is my one comfort with this news...he left offspring behind.

Still terribly sad...

Hey everyone...remember we said we would wait for DEC to confirm. We did not have their confirmation on the USFW band tied to Sabrina/Valiant.

In my opinion, I don't see how there can be 2 black over red with M/*T and USFW number similar to those in Upstate NY, but I want nothing more than to be wrong!

I know our group likes to investigate when we hear about falcons in our area. I'm sure DEC just wants to make sure everything is documented before making it public.  We also like to share news, but perhaps our public discussion is looked at as jumping the gun.

Patience...hopefully Rfalconcam will be contacted by DEC one way or the other.

I am sad to say that Connie received the confirmation from Barb Loucks today, that is was indeed and unfortunately Sabrina/Valiant.  I have been in contact with Joyce today too.  The end number of the silver  band was wrong on the hotline report, hence the issue and delay with a confirmation.

I am wondering if this was the pefa Roger and I saw two weeks ago at Central Terminal with a black/red band, although our pix were not good enough for an ID.  It is a possibility now that we know Valiant was in the area.

Sabrina/Valiant did what peregrine falcons do...

He fledged...
He learned skills & played in Rochester, NY...
He grew into a beautiful adult tiercel...
He found a mate "Zanar" from Ottawa, Canada...
They nested on the Canadian side of the Prescott/Ogdensburg Bridge over the St. Lawrence River...
They produced a successful youngun...
He survived 6 years of contributing to peregrine recovery...
And lastly flying free - over the rainbow.

Sabrina/Valiant is part of the Rochester Legacy and now we look forward to a continuing legacy in 2012 for our Rochester Falcons.

June 01, 2012 - New York - Prescott-Ogdensburg Bridge
CPF Postmaster Reports:

June 1st - 2012
As you know, the old nest box located on the Prescott-Ogdensburg bridge was relocated from the Canadian side of the bridge last year and moved to the Ogdensburg USA side.
The resident territorial adult female named “Zanar” - (who was produced at the Crowne Plazza hotel in Ottawa in 2004) was successful in attracting a new mate this spring and there is good news regarding their efforts. The pair have been successful in hatching several of their eggs this season and have hatchlings in nest box!

Hope these kids make it on their fledges!
