Title: Jemison's Triumphant Return
Post by: Yarak on 23-Aug-10, 03:30:23 PM
Quote

After six weeks of rehabilitation, we received word late last week that Jemison was hunting & killing her own food and flying very well in a 180-foot (55 meter) flight cage.  Since she was doing so well, the rehabber and DEC biologists determined that she was ready for release.
So at lunchtime today,...

Thanks.  I was lucky to be in the right place.  Mike Allen, Bill Stewart, Carol and Kathy were lined up to my right.  It's just good fortune that Jemison took off in my direction.  It's the closest a Peregrine has flown by me since Mariah swiped my glasses  8)

A happy ending...and more GREAT photos by Jim for us to witness the event unfold.  For all the photos you were not able to get of Jemison flying over Rochester,  he gave you the best view, Jim!  A parting gift!  Can't wait to see the other photos and video, too.  Thank you everyone involved.

Ah, our little Jemison free at last. I'll never forget that morning in front of the Rochester Plaza Hotel when I looked in your big beautiful eyes from inside that carrier. I feel we've come full circle since that day especially since Beauty chose your release day to eat a meal across the street from where you first were rescued. A building she's never been seen on before today.  See you on the other side sweet boy!

I felt very honored to witness Jemison's return to the wild.  I truly wish that ALL the Watchers could have seen him fly off until he was just a dot.  All the Rochester Watchers played a part in saving this beautiful creatures life.  and now, he'll do what he was born to do, be a Peregrine Falcon.  Thank you fellow Watchers for all you do to keep them safe.    This release wouldn't have been possible without all of your hard work and long days on the streets of Rochester.

The sky was overcast, raining on and off.  But, it stopped raining just as we were searching for the perfect spot to release Jemison.  Mike stopped his truck and we all pulled over.  The box containing Jemison was placed gently on the ground.  June volunteered to open the top of the box, while the rest of us had our cameras ready.  Kathy had received a quick lesson on how to use one of mine, while I switched to video.  Be sure to check out the Imprints post for an update, the addition of two videos I took of Jemison's release.

As June slowly slid the top of the box over to the side, a blur of brown and yellow launched itself from the box.  Jemison blew by Jim P out over the swamp and never looked back.

It started to rain, so I grabbed my binoculars and watched as Jemison flew higher and higher.  His flapping changed to soaring.  I had a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes as I watched this magnificent creature, finally free.  I never put my binoculars down until he disappeared over the horizon, heading north and west.  He was heading in the direction of Rochester.  Home.  Would he return?  Only time will tell, and the sharp eyes of the Rochester Falcon Watchers looking for a now blue and red band.

This brings such happy tears to my eyes!  Sweet Jem is now on his/her own and flying free.  That wouldn't have happened without all you dedicated watchers and the vets, rehabbers and DEC.  What a fantastic group you all are!  I have a great deal of fondness and respect for you.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful experience -- it truly made my day!

The last time I saw Jemison – and Archer, Beauty, Callidora and all of the Watchers – was at his second rescue on July 2nd. I haven’t been able to participate (in person) since that evening, but watching the video of his release and seeing all of the awesome pictures has certainly helped in filling the void I have felt since that fateful day.
FLY HIGH AND FREE, BEAUTIFUL JEMISON, and may you carry on the legacy of Mariah and Kaver for many years to come.

Had a lovely boat ride on the Mary Jemison & saw many herons & an egret. I talked w/ the Captain afterwards & he didn't know about the falcons or that a eyas had been named Jemison after Mary Jemison . He was very interested & I gave him my favorite photo of Jemison on top of NB w/ wings spread - he was thrilled. So it was a great day & anytime I can tell someone about falcons is awesome  :2thumbsup:

To have a falcon with your family name must be thrilling. I must also get to this site, Amy - I have passed by the road too many times on the way to Sonnenberg Gardens.
