Great idea, Janet - you shoulda done that! I think I will just leave things under the bed... easier than actually digging, but with the same overall effect...

Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces up, snow is exhilarating;
there is no such thing as bad weather, just different kinds of good weather.
- John Ruskin (1819-1900), British poet, artist

A favourite quote of my Dad's, when I complained about the weather!

"I want a man who is kind and considerate. It's the least you can ask of a millionaire..."

After Carol P's uplifting thought for today (we always dance in the rain here...), I thought I would lower the tone with the following. Cannot remember how much of it is someone else's quote and how much I have modified... anyway... I will share:

"When we humans have finally ruined pretty much everything, the only things left on Earth will be wood lice, earwigs and Barry Manilow records."

You sister's stinkies are the native kind - the ones that are driving us crazy in the Mid-Atantic (and in the Pacific Northwest) arrived in packing material from China!  WooHoo!  Another invasive species!  Although these guys aren't on the scale with zebra mussels or asian carp, but they haven't wiped out our crops yet.

Most of you know I work at Home Depot (my "retirement" position, haha).  I'd say that AT LEAST 60% of the people who come in the door the past week or so are looking for something, ANYTHING, that might get rid of them.  The whole town stinks.  I keep a snack size Pringles can in the house, and every time I spot one, in it goes.  Apparently they have no natural enemies.  A friend says her dog EATS them.  Imagine what the dog smells like now!  Another friend says her cat plays with them, and now the cat stinks too.  Thank Goodness my cats ignore them.

And 8 out of 10 people at each construction site, are just standing around waiting for something to happen...  The 9th one is holding a STOP sign...  The 10th is digging away diligently...

I watched the Indy 500 start to finish this year :)  Ready?  Jim Neighbors (Gomer Pyle) sang "Back Home Again in Indiana", MY Indy Driver - #10 Dario Franccitti won (his owner, Chip Gannassi won the Daytona 500 AND the Brickyard, which makes GMS the Triple Crown Winner in Motor Sports).

As for going fast at Indy, 140 MPH was about the average for the NASCAR cars (190 MPH for Daytona and Talladega the 2 other Super Speedways) because Indy is flat - I think the Open Wheels hit about 180(ish), but don't quote me on that.

This weeks "Race for the Chase" is at 1PM on ESPN from Kansas Motor Speedway.  Yes, I have it bad!  :)

Thanks Carol AND You Can Never Go Too Fast!

MY Thought for the day...

One of my sisters and I - the Old Cougars! - are besotted fans of Rafael Nadal (He lets us call him Rafi). Whenever he has had one of his injuries, we always offer to "kiss it better". We are not making that offer this time - but DO hope you recover from those splits, Donna! (Is there a place for you on "Amerca's Got Talent", perhaps?)

Oh! First thing I should have said (I heard this somewhere and howled...) - You lawyered-up yet??

Thought for Today - This just got me thinking.

Fly Away
John Denver

All of her days have gone soft and cloudy
All of her dreams have gone dry
All of her nights have gone sad and shady
She's getting ready to fly

Fly away, fly away, fly away.

Life in the city can make you crazy
For sounds of the sand and the sea
Life in a high-rise can make you hungry
For things that you can't even see

Fly away, fly away, fly away.

In this whole world there's nobody as lonely as she
There's nowhere to go and there's nowhere
That she'd rather be.

She's looking for lovers and children playing
She's looking for signs of the spring
She listens for laughter and sounds of dancing
She listens for any old things

Fly away, fly away, fly away.

Thought for Today

"The Peregrine is definitely a celestial bird. The Egyptian sun god Horus, whose name means the distant one', had the head of a falcon, possibly a Peregrine, and the Eye of Horus was considered a symbol of great power. He united the upper and lower kingdoms and gave divinity to the pharaohs, who were thought to be his representatives on earth. As well as Horus, the falcon could be associated with Menthu, a god of war, and with Ra, go sod the sun. In Norse mythology, the chief god Odin often took the form of a Peregrine when he visited earth, and in China it was a symbol of war, and so was ambivalent. The Japanese Ainu thought that it was a helper of humanity, and in Native American culture, it was heralded as a symbol of war and was the younger brother of the eagle."   :falcon2:

After seeing Kaver flying higher and faster and kakking his displeasure to all that would listen, then seeing why he was so angry.  An Eagle flying through his territory.  A massive bird compared to the brave, little Tiercel.  Size did not matter in this case.  The Eagle could not escape quickly enough.  Seems younger brother was not pleased to see his older, bigger brother!

Little known facts about Rhea Mae.  I considered naming her Mae Rhea instead of Rhea Mae, but it sounded too much like Mariah.

Mark Nash calls her Ray May.

Back in 2007, I received an email.  Bad news about Rhea Mae.  She was in really bad shape at the Toronto Zoo's rehab center.  A really bad case of bumble foot.  I and the other Watchers were ready to drive up to Toronto ASAP.  Not that we could have done anything.  By the end of the day, I found out it had been a case of mistaken identity.  Thankfully it wasn't Rhea Mae, but another juvenile Peregrine, who very sadly passed away.   :(

Rhea was the first Peregrine I had seen close up.  I was mesmerized.  She was sooooo gorgeous!  I had my picture taken with her that day.  She passed away of old age shortly after that.  I cherish that picture.

Thought for Today

"The rich, sweet smell of the hayricks rose to his chamber window; the hundred perfumes of the little flower-garden beneath scented the air around; the deep-green meadows shone in the morning dew that glistened on every leaf as it trembled in the gentle air: and the birds sang as if every sparkling drop were a fountain of inspiration to them."

My friend and co-worker Kim brought this to my attention.

Thought for today.

With extreme pride, we wish a happy birthday to all Marines past and present.
May your shelter half never leak.
May your sleeping bag always be warm.
May your feet always remain dry,
and may all your jouneys be downhill.

Happy 235th Birthday Marines!

November

by Thomas Hood

No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease,
No comfortable feel in any member--
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds,

November!

Kevin recited this poem to me every November 1st since 1979!  Needless to say, he didn't like November!  Now I take up the lament!

I love the month of November! My father (87 this year) and I both have birthdays and Thanksgiving is celebrated with friends and family. No birds? I love looking out the kitchen window every day  to see the Juncos, Blue Jays, Black-capped Chicadees, Sparrows, Woodpeckers, Nuthatches, Mourning Doves, etc feeding at our feeder and drinking from the heated birdbath. While driving the 490 to Rochester last week, we saw 7 RTH on various trees and signs in the median looking for a meal and there were huge flocks of Canadian Geese gathered by Market Place Mall. And lastly-my Thanksgiving Cactus is blooming and our garage is full of Box Elder bugs (that I'm not so happy about)! So from my perspective, November is pretty special!

That's perfect!  I really don't much like November because it means winter's coming, and I REALLY don't like that.  Also, my book club has a poetry dinner each December.  Each member brings a dish to share and also must bring a poem and read it to the group.  I always do short ones because I'm not such a big poetry fan.  I'm reading NOVEMBER this year!  Thanks, Anne!

Thomas Hood
Born in London, England in 1799.  Died in 1845 at the age of 45.

"November in London is usually cool and overcast, and in Hood's day subject to frequent fog and smog."

I think this explains why he wrote this poem about November.  He probably didn't see many birds in November.

A Bird

A bird came down the walk,
He did not know I saw;
He bit an angleworm in halves
And ate the fellow, raw.
And then he drank a dew
From a convenient grass,
And then hopped sidewise to the wall
To let a beetle pass.

by Emily Dickinson

Thought for This Day Before Thanksgiving.

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity.  It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow. ~ Melody Beattie

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving everyone!

Thought for Today

"I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December
A magical thing
And sweet to remember.
'We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,'
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December."
- Oliver Herford, I Heard a Bird Sing

Oliver Herford (1863 - 1935)
British born (but American), a humorist writer, illustrator, who is as well known for his poems and quotes as for his artwork for books and slicks. For the latter, a long run in both the Mentor (Jill and Tobey) and Ladies' Home Journal. Usually signed his art "OHerford." Nicknamed "The American Oscar Wilde."

I had to include this other quote by Oliver Herford:

“Cat: a pygmy lion who loves mice, hates dogs, and patronizes human beings.”

Interesting...November is much nicer here; our fall color doesn't usually peak until the first week of November, so it's usually very pretty.  Even now, on December 3rd, many of the oak trees (and our sweetbay magnolia) are holding onto their leaves.  I hate the dark of the early winter, however...

"I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't wanna know. Some things are better left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful it can't be expressed in words, and it makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you those voices soared, higher and farther than anybody in a grey place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made these walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free."

Be kind to the outside creatures.

Remember them on these really cold, snowy days.

My bird feeders are full and the suet is available to whoever needs it.

When I go out to fill the tube feeder hanging from the tree in my backyard, I am serenaded by beautiful Gold Finches and Chickadees.  "HURRY!  PLEASE HURRY!"  :sparrow: :finch:

Really good advise, Carol!  I always carry in-the-shell peanuts in my coat pocket for any squirrels or pigeons I happen upon.  The other day, when I was buying some new earbuds for my MP3, the salesman looked startled, when I pulled the actual MP3 out and it was covered in peanut "dust"!  I explained and he looked thoughtful for a minute and decided that that was a good idea ('though, he still looked at me as if I was a little loopy! )  It's a good idea to tell other people about Carol's advise!
