View a Live Turtle Webcam in the Lower Florida Keys  :mbanana: Let the fun begin !!

Environmental enthusiasts should be able to observe infant loggerhead sea turtles hatching and emerging from their nest, via this live streaming “turtle webcam” installed on a private beach on Big Pine Key in the Lower Florida Keys. The camera, funded by the Florida Keys Tourist Development Council, currently is focused on a nest with eggs projected to hatch sometime between Aug. 27 and Sept.3.  Afterwards, plans call for relocating the webcam to other nearby nests.

Approximate dates loggerhead turtles are
expected to hatch::
Nest 1   Failed to hatch by  Aug. 25 (Cam moved to Nest #2)
Nest 2   Nighttime hours of Aug. 27  (Hatched)
Nest 3   Nighttime hours Sept. 1 THEY HATCHED AND I SAW IT 8:52P WOW WOW! It was truly amazing but so fast! From the first little guy all of a sudden they all are out and running. I captured it all on a quicktime movie but I don't know how to post it  :no:  but heres a few of my capture pictures. And their was a hammie who was the last, did a backflip, and struggled but made it. sooo cute!   :clap:

Its pretty addictive. I saw a deer go by before the sun set. I just hope I can tell between a large crab and a sea turtle in size. Im guessing the turtle will be bigger.Good luck ! I hope one of us sees something :2thumbsup:

I saw the deer also and the crab that I thought was a turtle....lol

Just remember that the crab walks sideways and has many legs (think big  :spider: with a shell) and the turtle skooches and only has 4 legs...(just trying to be helpful here!)   :D

Judi, when I saw the crab :spider: (with shell) that I thought was a turtle, it was a very blurry shot. All I saw was movement. After a few seconds, I realized, it was NOT a turtle. Actually, it moved to fast and it was only 1. Thanks

This guy was raking the seaweed into a pile. Wouldn't that make it harder for the hatchlings to reach the water?  ???

Now they are flattening the seaweed. Guess it's better than picking it up!

I just peeked at the cam and I think you're right, Donna.  Either it's a new location or they moved the cam back a bit, the sign is not as close to the cam as it was before.

Nest 1   :crying:   Failed to hatch by Aug. 25  Oh well so much for nest #1, now were watching nest #2. Hmmm.   :hyper: Hopefully this one is better.

Approximate dates loggerhead turtles are
expected to hatch::
Nest 1    Failed to hatch by Aug. 25
Nest 2    Nighttime hours between Aug. 27 and Sept. 3
Nest 3    Nighttime hours between Sept. 1 and Sept. 9

It's very possible that the nest was raided by predators (not just 4-legged but also 2 legged and winged), not an unusual occurance.  Keeping my fingers crossed for nest #2!

Environmental enthusiasts should be able to observe infant loggerhead sea turtles hatching and emerging from their nest, via this live streaming “turtle webcam” installed on a private beach on Big Pine Key in the Lower Florida Keys. The camera, funded by the Florida Keys Tourist Development Council, is currently focused on a second nest with eggs projected to hatch during the nighttime hours sometime between now and Sept. 3. The camera was previously trained on a nest that was expected to hatch between Aug. 17 and Aug. 25, yet no hatchlings emerged. Researchers plan to excavate the nest to determine what factors affected the predicted hatch.

Environmental enthusiasts should be able to observe loggerhead sea turtles hatching and emerging from their nest, via this live streaming “turtle webcam” installed on a private beach on Big Pine Key in the Lower Florida Keys. The camera, funded by the Florida Keys Tourist Development Council, was previously trained on a nest (Nest #1)  that was expected to hatch between Aug. 17 and Aug. 25, yet no hatchlings emerged. A second nest  of eggs (Nest #2) hatched during the nighttime hours on Aug. 27.  Due to natural predation by nearby raccoons, a small number of hatchlings were scavenged. Permitted beach surveyors excavated loggerhead Nest #2 and found a total of 84 eggs. Of these, 80 hatched successfully, including one live hatchling discovered and released during excavation,  and four unfertilized eggs.The camera is expected to be focused on a third nest with eggs projected to hatch during the nighttime hours sometime between Sept. 1 and Sept. 8.

It is important to note that in any turtle nest hatchings, natural predation by other animals - raccoons, seagulls, ghost crabs, even feral cats - is a normal occurrence. Viewers should understand this is a possibility, and to not be alarmed in the event this happens during such an extraordinary natural event.

Its was !  I posted some more pics on page 1 and I have a quicktime movie of it all but I don't know how to get it off my desktop and onto the site. It only took a total of 5 minutes for them to get to the water once the first few guys came out. It was like a volcano of baby turtles  :rofl: Glad they all made it to the water. I didn't want to see anything bad happen nature or not my fingers were crossed.

It has to be hard on the newly hatched turtles...look at all the debris and seaweed they have to trek through. I hope none got stuck in that mess.

I guess they had to do alot of editing because they didn't show the little last baby who was sooo cute trying for 15 seconds to flap his little fins and get over the rope only to tumble backwards into his hole. Then out he came like gangbusters trying to catch up. I wish they hadn't cut that out it was a special moment watching that little one. I did notice some :flash: in the original not there now too
