Title: Millie Finds a New Home, Family in Michigan
Post by: Donna on 04-Sep-09, 07:14:52 AM
!!! Port Colborne Offspring nesting in Michigan
September 03, 2009 - Port Colborne - ADM Mill
Kathy Reports:

Thank you to Alison of the CMNH Forum for bringing this news to my attention!  I’m sure fans of Freedom and Purity will happy to hear that one of their offspring - Millie, born in 2005 is the new resident female at the Monroe Power Plant in Michigan.  She was previously nesting at Toledo Edison’s Bay Shore power plant in Oregon, Ohio.  Not sure what happened there but happy to hear that she came to no harm and has now found a new home.

Her new mate is Leopold, a 14 year old PF that has been at this site since 1997.   They produced two chicks this year named Heidi and Tyson.   Two more great grand-children for Mariah and Kaver of Rochester! :sparrow: :sparrow:

Thank you again to Alison for sharing this exciting news!!

This is such good news....GO MILLIE!!!!

Great news!  We've updated Imprints.

Too bad we haven't heard anything more about Ihteram since she was unceremoniously prevented from nesting at the St. Joseph's Cathederal site  :(

As Leopold and our Mariah show-- age is irrelevant

The thing that gets me in this whole tangled family tree thing is what are the chances in all the I don't even know how many wild peregrines out there that we'd have so many instances of known blood relatives of peregrines in Rochester pairing up with other known blood relatives of peregrines in Rochester...that's what's REALLY boggling my mind!

And I think we will one day find out that Ihteram moved from Detroit to Oregon, Ohio and took up with Millie's ex Swifty...or some such Falcon Crest moment  Just knowing for sure that she survived to adulthood I have faith that she's nesting happily somewhere.

I have to think that something as minor as an inaccessible nest site wouldn't dissuade one of Mariah's daughters from finding another nest site.  Ihteram is no doubt busy carrying on the lineage; we humans just haven't caught up with her yet.

They really have learned from wonderful parents.  I think that has contributed to survival.

I am the one who posted the information about Millie on the Cleveland forum yesterday. I just found a report from someone who works at the Monroe Power Plant which indicates that Millie and Leopold may have had three chicks this year:

At the Power Plant at which I work, we've had a pair of Peregrine Falcons nesting under an overhang for the past thirteen years.  Leopold, the male, has been there from the first.   However, the present Mrs. Leopold is new this year, and is his fourth mate.  Leopold has fathered young every year for now his thirteenth consecutive year.  One of this year's three youngsters decided to go exploring this morning, and wound up inside the power plant.  We had to rescue it, and, since it can't really fly, and we can't get it back to the nest, it will spend the next couple of weeks at a rehab center, getting banded and fed until it can fly.  As a part of all that, I took a couple of phone photos.  Kinda dark in there, but I was only a couple of feet away, so he's pretty visible:

Leopold (band number black/red N/*4) was born at the Rhodes Tower in Columbus, Ohio. He is the son of Bandit and Aurora, and a brother of Buckeye at the Terminal Tower in Cleveland.

I wonder where Swifty is these days? He was Millie's mate in Toledo, Ohio.

And look where Millie is: Millie is Freedom and Purity's daughter and Freedom is the son of Mariah and Kaver.

And...Millie is Archer's sister.

Even though Port Colburne has had its problems the past two years, they have something to be very proud of.

Very sad news I've just read on CMNH - Leopold has passed away and 3 of he and Millie's chicks are in rehab ...she's having a hard time but sounds like the people there are helping her out and being supportive.

It is very sad to lose Leopold, one of the iconic tiercels. Last year we lost the other venerable tiercel named Leopold, and now we have lost both of them.

I hope Millie will be able to care for the chicks successfully on her own. I think returning them to her in shifts is a good idea.

Leopold was a very handsome tiercel, and very successful, having raised 33 chicks over the years.
