I know we like to hear about our fledglings but not this way! Like Brian said, if she can't be released for some reason, maybe she can come to Wild Wings. Poor Cali! :(

Is somewhere in Indiana County PA (I think!) From Kate St John

The only Rehabber I found in Indiana County is this one;

Indiana County

P = Passerines (songbirds, water fowl & woodpeckers)

OK, Cali is NOT at the Wildlife Rehab I posted. The lady said to check with Wildlife Works or Wildlife center of Pittsburgh. I have the phone numbers for both places.

I want her at Wild Wings too if it looks like it is too severe.  That was my immediate thought.  I want her to be free but if she can't be, I want her where we know she will be loved and cared for.

Poor Callidora.  Thankfully she was found and is in good hands where she will receive great care.  Just as I arrived home late tonite, I received the bad news from Donna & MAK.  When I got onto my computer, I found an email from Kate St. John, with the sad news.

Callidora has a badly injured wing & is at a rehabber in PA.  She will be Xrayed to see the extent of the damage.

Kate has promised to keep us posted as she receives updates from the rehabber.

I'm sure the rehabber will keep Kate updated with Callidora's progress, so she can let us know.  I know how impatient we all get (including me!).

As soon as I hear anything more, I will share with the forum.  Poor Callidora.  Get well soon little one!

Wow...so many thoughts right now...she's almost 2 so she's pretty strong to make it this far... interesting that she's near where Beauty was hatched.  I've often wondered if the Toronto nesting cluster of Mariah's daughters might indicate that's where Mariah was hatched.

But mostly I'm happy she was found & is receiving good care and sending healing thoughts her way...

Good rehabbers always need money...... can we send them some????

You're right nycbird.  Rehabbers can always use donations.  But I've found in many cases they want to remain anonymous so they don't get overrun with phone calls by well meaning, caring folks.  I'll have Kate check to see if the rehabber minds us knowing who they are and whether we can somehow get donations to them.

Mariah's rehabber did not want their information published, so we honored that request.

Some rehabbers are more than happy to be known, so let's wait and see what Callidora's rehabber's want.

Hey MAK!  Callidora beat all the odds!  She made it to her 2nd year!  She's obviously a very strong falcon that has learned to successfully hunt and survive on her own.  Let's hope that the injury to her wing is not too severe.  They heal very quickly.

Sending healing thoughts and prayers to our dear Callidora.

Everyone does not need to know rehabbers info..... maybe a P.O. Box for Kate ???  Or someone who does know could collect and take it to rehabber.  If Callie comes home to Wild Wings, we might have to pay her bus fare, too.  Pooling our pennies could go a long way with all Callie's fans.

I'll ask Kate the best way to get donations to the rehabber.

I hope she will be able to heal & be released but if she can't be then it would be wonderful to have her at WW

She was such a beautiful falcon & not a day goes by I don't think about her & Jemison

They are so special to me, my first birds of prey I saw hatch & got me hooked on these magnificent creatures

Keeping her in my thoughts & prayers

Kate posted this on FB

Yesterday I got a call from Wildlife Conservation Officer Beth Fife.  An injured adult peregrine had been found in the mills area of Monessen, Pennsylvania, shown above in a photo linked from www.city-data.com (http://www.city-data.com).

Beth had already called the Game Commission’s peregrine falcon coordinator, Art McMorris, to tell him the band numbers but he was not available.  While waiting for Art’s return call she wondered about the bird’s identity.

I looked up the bands as best I could.  The bird was not from Pittsburgh or the Midwest.  My friend Karen Lang said, “Maybe it’s from New York.”   And she was right.

Juanita Woods identified her as Callidora, hatched at the Times Square nest, Rochester, NY in 2010.  Her father is Archer, grandson of Mariah and Kaver of Kodak.  Her mother is Beauty, daughter of Dorothy and Erie at the University of Pittsburgh.  Callidora is Dorothy’s granddaughter.

The news from Beth was not particularly good.  Callidora is at a rehabber’s in Indiana County, PA with a badly injured wing and will be x-rayed to determine the extent of the damage.  I don’t know the name or location of the rehabber and have no other news.

I expect to hear more next week as business gets underway again.  Not only is this the weekend, but it’s snowing and sleeting here with a projected 2-inch snow+ice accumulation.  Things have slowed down considerably.

For information on the town where Callidora was found, see City-Data’s website on Monessen.  Also see this brief blog post about Monessen at rustwire.

I hope Callidora will be OK.

A view of downtown Monessen, Pennsylvania where Cali was found. Very small place.

Once a bustling steel town that packed gambling halls and pizza parlors, Monessen has dwindled from 12,000 to about 8,000 today.

It now has 232 vacant residences, the most of any other Pennsylvania town, according to the Associated Press. And unlike, Detroit or Youngstown or Flint, tiny Monessen cannot command the resources do do much demolition.

The city, 28 miles south of Pittsburgh, has about $75,000 to devote to demolition this year.
