Always nice to hear from the kids.  The girls seem to stay in touch better than the boys.

This is such fantastic news!  We kept wondering who this mystery male was as we helped with the watch at Central Terminal this year.  Little did we know we were watching "our" Diamante!

Joyce's news this morning was so thrilling!  Now Rochester and Buffalo are truly sister Peregrine Places!  It's so exciting to be watching the live legacy of Mariah and Kaver!  Diamante is such a beautiful bird, so white and sleek, he never seems ruffled like Gleig!  A very elegant bird.

So how did the name Diamante get chosen?

Now Roger and I have Diamond in the gorge and Diamante at CT to watch!

So how did the name Diamante get chosen?

He was named by Ms. Dawson’s Class, School 28, in Rochester, NY.

From the Banding Day 2008 entry on Imprints:

"For the fiirst time in three years, we have a boy! Our second eyas is named Diamante. Diamante was named by Ms Dawson’s Class at Rochester City Humboldt Elementary School (#28). Diamante is the spanish word for a diamond. A diamond is the hardest substance on earth, just as the Peregrine is the fastest bird on earth. The students in Ms. Dawson’s class are bilingual so they found it fitting to use a Spanish name for their choice.

"Diamante will have a RED tape band over his USFWS band, and his ID band is black/green 21 over R."

Thanks, Shaky!   And we have no clue whether Diamante and Gleig hooked up elsewhere and came here together?  She is younger and this is likely her first nest, but he could have had other mates.

Thought:  could Diamante have been the tiercel seen with Jean (Syracuse, ID'd again by Joyce) at the old Cargill elevators the year before he took over CT?  Joyce???  That pair seemed to have disappeared this year, but then Gleig and Diamante show up at Central Terminal, kill Stella and Stash's outcome is still unknown.  The two sites are within eyeshot of each other.   I'm thinking, Diamante was in the area...

It's wonderful news that Diamante is the resident male in Buffalo with Gleig! It is so great to know that Quest's brother has shown up safe and well with a nest of his own.

He is a very handsome tiercel.

Thank you for the great pics, Sage!

I always tell the story of our falcon "watch" on the High Falls bridge.  We were looking out onto the gorge, wondering where the falcons were.  We looked behind us and a juvie was on the railing-- it was Diamonte.  He was a beautiful juvie and is a gorgeous adult!

Peregrines Central Terminal 11.6.12

When we arrived at CT this morning after voting, Diamante was hiding out on the back rail of his favorite lookout. Gleig then flew back her to her nest on the tower and Diamante came out front!

Diamante looks like a big bird, but when you see them flying together, Gleig looks twice his size!  Together, they won the site last March from Stash and Stella, so as long as they overwinter here, I don't think they will get successfully threatened!

Love to see these pics!  I remember these days so well!  And let's not forget our Quest - the big girl in the middle with the  red transmitter harness across her chest!    Then in 2008 and now in 2012.  A treasure to see Diamante and Quest!

Donna, thanks for reminding me to post today's shot of Diamante and Gleig high above the clock on Central Terminal today before I go to bed!  This is Roger's which shows D's face, while mine on FBPP didn't.  So sweet to see them together up there.  One flew in to the other as we were driving in, I think it was him.

Just for fun, here's my Fledge Watch Report from June 20, 2008, the day Diamante fledged.

Carol P. - Diamante Has Fledged! - June 20, 2008 - 4-6:30 pm
Friday, June 20th, 2008

It was a very eventful 2 1/2 hours.  Lots and lots of flying by Mariah, Kaver and three young fledglings.  While Seneca still lingers in the nest box and Quest still runs around the playpen strengthening her wing muscles, Diamante gave flying a try.

All day, we wondered where Diamante was.  We could only count four eyases on the tower.  Did he fledge?  Was he hunkered down somewhere, snoozing?  I believe that he did fledge early that day, as reported by Dan S.  A very short flight out of the playpen and back on.

At 5:30 p.m., we finally saw all five eyases/fledglings!  Yes!  Seneca in the nest box, Quest in the playpen, Zephyr on the left side of the nest box perch, Susan B on the southwest corner of the 19th floor and (drumroll please!), Diamante was located on the southside 20th floor of the Kodak Tower.  I was so happy to see all five young Falcons.

During my Watch, Susan B finally made it out to the High Falls Stack.  Zephyr followed her and they remained there for quite awhile.

It was a gorgeous evening for once, and I was joined by many Watchers, too numerous to name (because I know I’ll forget someone!).  ;-)
Tomorrow should be an interesting day.  I’ll bet Quest is ready to be free of her playpen.  She’s ready to fledge and I’m sure Seneca won’t be far behind.

Carol P.

We were so glad to find Diamante and Gleig and home today, after missing them the past couple weeks.  They were both seen flushing the pigeons, with no apparent payoff.   First Gleig flew back to the tower and onto her perch, waiting anxiously to see if Diamante was more successful.  No, he flew back empty handed too.  Pix 1 & 2 are Diamante, 3 & 4 are Gleig

So wake up even if it is January!  These CT birds are playing games!  Here is what I blogged but I need your help as to if I ID'd them right, okay?

Quote
~Peregrine Games at Central Terminal~
Usually we find Gleig on the nestbox perch at Central Terminal but today, they saw us coming and decided to play games on us. On approach I saw one pefa flying back to the tower and going to the nest side, out of our sight. When we got in position and got the camera clicking away, the bird at the box seemed to figeting and turning around. It was Diamante!

Then a second pefa flew in, displaced the first, though I was out of camera range because the new Pefamobile has no moonroof. I alert Roger to stop and get some shots. He missed the flying shots but got the second bird who turned out to be Gleig (last pic)..

I still get teary eyed seeing Diamante. I really thought we were done discovering M&K offspring out there. Not that there aren't more...just we don't know where they are.

Looks like he has white on the back of his head like Quest.

But Ei, you can come here to see Diamante! And Ojibwa and mate, and Jean, and Gleig, and BB and Yankee then hop over to NF for Onyx and Diamond, and more!   Get more Peregrines-per-mile in Buffalo!

Oh I will...absolutely going to make the rounds this year!

Kathy O, Lisa McK, Dana and I took a trip to Buffalo to spend some time with Diamante at Central Terminal.  Both Diamante and Gleig were home and I was thrilled when Diamante stooped directly over me!  That boy can really move!  lol

We also saw him fly into some nearby trees and snatch an unsuspecting Starling from one of the branches.  Quite an impressive hunter.

Love to see "our kids" doing well.   :D

Since the chase at CT, we have not be able to positively ID Diamante as being here. Until we know, you can follow the updates on the Buffalo thread or FBPP. Hope to get the ID soon. 4-5 pefas were in the air when we arrived earlier this month. We at first assumed G & D were the ones who returned. but nothing appears normal. Not helping is work being done at CT which will be continuing all year. :(

Thanks Kris.  I want to take a tour sometime again.  I was inside twice. Originally 4-5 years ago before there were tours, and again when one of the juvies fell in between the buildings off the roof and we could see that it was okay from the inside, thanks to the workers.  It is such a great landmark, and I am glad the restoration project exits.

The female at the Revenue Canada building in north Mississauga is Alfrieda, banded Black 73 over Green AW and she was hatched at the Central Terminal nest site in 2012.  She is daughter to Gleig from the Hamilton Sheraton Hotel and Diamante from Rochester.

Mississauga North Female is Identified But Needs Confirmation
August 08, 2013 - International, National and Local News

Tracy Simpson Reports:

For almost a year now Rob, Bruce and I have been chasing a juvenile peregrine female around the Mississauga North area attempting to identify her.  A really big, dark and heavily streaked female, she has challenged and frustrated us by always sitting so high up our scopes were useless or turning her recovery band in towards the Revenue Canada building that she roosts on.  Yesterday while in Mississauga, I was fortunate enough to have her roosting on the building, left leg in, and I was determined to wait her out.  I got out the scope, camera and any other tool I could find to try and identify her.  I got lucky.

She made a short flight from one corner of the building to another and was flipping her head like a little kid at something.  I was able to capture band colours and the top digits only in the scope view and on the camera.  Given that I knew her banding year to be 2012, last year as she is just now moulting into her subadult phase, and the colours and top digits, I took a chance and contacted the New York DEC for a bit of a scavenger hunt.  I sent off an email with the information I had.  How many females in 2012 could have that top digit combination?  Well, just one.

The female at the Revenue Canada building in north Mississauga is Alfrieda, banded Black 73 over Green AW and she was hatched at the Central Terminal nest site in 2012.  She is daughter to Gleig from the Hamilton Sheraton Hotel and Diamante from Rochester.

Now I must warn you that this ID is preliminary and MUST be confirmed by a full reading of the band but the chances that this is Alfrieda are very high.  The DEC shared with me that Alfrieda struggled in her fledgling phase and was rescued from the ground twice before really getting her wings.  Not only is she now in Ontario but as of today, our watcher Rob Mueller found her with a male!!  I knew yesterday when she was flipping her head and being somewhat silly that it had to be another falcon that I couldn’t see.  You don’t flip your head at food or predators if you want to succeed!!  He made his first appearance today and we will be working very hard to confirm Alfrieda as the female and discover who her mate is.

Pictures will be posted shortly so please check back.

WHOO HOO another one makes it across the border!!

Activity at Mississauga North Heats Up!!
August 09, 2013 - International, National and Local News
Tracy Simpson Reports:

I just heard news from Rob that the female we believe to be Alfrieda is still active around the Mississauga North buildings with a male yet to be identified.  While on lunch break, Rob took a peak to see if they were there and the pair came bombing in with much chit chat.  They definately seem to be courting and beginning to bond!  We will be working hard to discover who the male is and confirm without a doubt that this female is Alfrieda.  Don’t touch that dial there is so much more to come!!

Trying to get an earlier than usual start on the family tree. Perhaps I'm missing something somewhere, but I cannot find much about Diamante & Glieg's 2014 brood.

I found 1 tweet from Joyce that 3 females were banded-Phoenix, Gustavina & Terrazzo and 1 Peregrine Place FB comment that all 3 were flying well but that's it.

Anyone have any pictures? Know of any other reports?

Thanks!

Hi Guys! Roger is registering so he can post pix of wonderful Diamante' and Gleig. I was pretty much out of commission last season and I'm trying to do better this year. Everything seems good at Central Terminal so far. They are in heat this week so we will have eggs very soon! Unfortunately there is no cam so our signal that incubation has begun will be when Gleig is tucked away in the scrape!

uh oh, Roger was rejected because of his gmail address, so he's digging out his old yahoo email info.

Thanks, Donna! I grabbed the image url, tried it, didn't work, so I took everything off after .jpg and it still didn't work! Why?

Here's the How to for online pictures:

There are two options for putting a picture into your post. Both create a small thumbnail preview of the picture that can be clicked on to see the full-size picture.

Online Option

!!! Oshawa Lake Ridge Hospital - First hatch! Hopefully more to come!!
May 22, 2015 - Oshawa - Lakeridge Hospital
Mark Nash Reports:

May 22nd - 2015
Some great news to report today from Oshawa. The results of my site visit today paid off big time, as we were rewarded with a visual confirmation of the Oshawa Lake Ridge Hospitals newest family member, as the first peregrine hatchling was observed!

A big thank you to Ken and Ernie at the Oshawa Lake Ridge health care centre who were able to accommodate my visit on some rather short notice, but the end of the day visit and distraction yielded some great news and was indeed well spent.

The pictures speak for themselves, as we were able to confirm the one of the four eggs has in fact hatched. While the resident adult male was not present during our short visit, the adult female was in the nest box brooding her new hatchlings while still incubating the other three remaining eggs.

We all have our fingers crossed that the remaining eggs hatch and looking forward to banding!

Congratulations Lake Ridge!!

Stay tuned for further updates and news on a banding date.

You can see the short video I was able to shoot with the wireless camera at:

CENTRAL TERMINAL
Both juvies put on a spectacular flying show with stoops, talon tagging and a game of chase dad around the tower! Then Gleig came in with a pigeon and one of the juvies grabbed onto it in mid-air but mom wouldn't let go. They got lower and lower until mom finally let go about 15 feet over our head! (Michelle)

Gleig, the male Peregrine Falcon at the Terminal not too happy with the NY-DEC getting an egg count.
We may get one more egg, but we have at least 4 new peregrines hatching at the Terminal.
Peregrine Falcons eat pigeons and other small birds and are a protected species in NYS.
Stay tuned.

CPF Postmaster Reports:

May 2nd - 2016
Our bad,, as we are way behind in the updates!! Yes, congratulations is in order on several accounts,,,
Yes, the resident Oshawa pair have in fact been involved in full time incubation duties over the past month! :-)

It would appear by the recent observations and photos, (with much thanks to the dedicated “human” hospital foster parents, the resident adults are the same as last year.

The adults did in fact winter over on territory and remained very territorial and protective of their new nest box! Outsiders beware!!!!

The best news of late (only just today),, is that eggs are starting to hatch!!! With one egg confirmed to have hatched so far,, its shaping up to be a very positive season for the resident adult peregrines at Lakeview!!
Stay tuned…………

Congratulations are in order!!!

I am very sad that Diamante has been injured, but very grateful to the person who found him. At least he is being cared for and receiving the help he needs. Hoping for a complete recovery for this special tiercel.

I also hope that Gleig is okay. She is a big, strong falcon, which may help her defend her territory.

Sage posted this on Peregrine Place four hours ago:

So sorry to have to share this. Gleig's beautiful mate Diamante' is the injured Peregrine who is being treated now at the Wildlife Division of the SPCA of Erie County.

He had surgery for the puncture wound to his neck. He also has a broken wing and other injuries. I will post updates as they are available.

His severe injuries lead us to think It was a fight for the nest site. I will go check the site tomorrow to see if Gleig is onsite or gone.

Some history: Gleig and Diamante' took over the site from Stash and Stella and Stella was found dead on the roof the next spring. This is life as a Peregrine Falcon.

I checked this site last Thursday and found Gleig on the perch and Diamante' on the ledge under the perch. It seemed they were having a conversation. Friday she was on her perch and Diamante' was near the top of the tower on a lookout point. I wonder if he knew there was another Peregrine nearby.

Central Terminal happy news! Carl reports Gleig has a new mate! They are doing aerial dances around and over the tower! Carl says she looks like Gleig but he had no binocs. UPDATE on DIAMANTE'
Sutures were removed today and the neck wound appears to be healing well. Wing is still in wrap. He's eating when hand fed but this may be because his neck is still bothering him so being hand fed is better. The spinal injury has resolved. He's standing and using his legs.

This just in from ~Peregrine Place~  !

UPDATE on DIAMANTE': Diamante' just today went out to the flight cage and flew! The wing is all healed now but of course his flying isn't strong yet. He has to build up the muscles before he can get released. It's been a long process for our beautiful little guy since he was admitted and we didn't know if he'd even make it! Dr.Karen has taken great care of him and she knew you were all rooting for him to make it. Diamante' couldn't have been in better hands after getting beat up like he did. Thank you Karen and the Wildlife staff at the SPCA!

For donations go to https://www.yourspca.org (https://www.yourspca.org) and there is a Donate button around the middle of the page. You can specify the Wildlife Division in Diamante's name, and all the other Peregrines before him!

This is wonderful news! Many thanks to his veterinarian and everyone else involved in caring for Diamanté. He has obviously been receiving excellent care, and has also been doing his share of helping with his rehab.

Posted by Erie County SPCA an hour ago:

***Wildlife Update*** On December 12th we admitted the male peregrine, Diamante, from Central Terminal after he was in a fight with another male. Yesterday, after radiographs to determine that the fractured left ulna was healed, the wing wrap was removed and he was place in a small outdoor enclosure for 1-2 weeks to start stretching his wings. He will need further conditioning in a larger enclosure and we're hopeful that we can release him in a different part of the country soon because we don't want him to come back to the territory that was taken over by the new male.

To learn more about Diamante and the Wildlife Department tune in to WECK Wildlife Wednesday at 8:20am on Timeless WECK 102.9 FM/1230 AM.

A small update on Diamanté from Peregrine Place today:

Isn't he beautiful? Dr. Karen took this pic for us today because she knows how much he is missed by his fans both here and Rochester! He is flying but is not strong enough yet for release.

Photo from Peregrine Place.

Good to know Diamanté is flying!  He is missed by his fans elsewhere too . . .

I personally hope they wait to release him until after the breeding season. I don't care how far away the release is, he'll be back to Glieg as fast as his wings will take him.

SPCA of Erie Co. FB page update on Diamanté!  :2thumbsup:

***Wildlife Report*** We are happy to report that Diamonte, the central terminal male Peregrine, will be transported to Syracuse this weekend. He's recovered from a broken ulna and large gash on his neck after another male came in and took over his mate and nest. We're lucky to have been able to save his life as Peregrine's are endangered in New York State.

In Syracuse, Diamonte will be in a 175' enclosure for flight evaluation and flight conditioning. We are confident that he'll be released in another area where he may go on to breed and have a second chance at life.

From Peregrine Place FB Today!

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR BUFFALO AND ROCHESTER WATCHERS: DIAMANTE' and another Peregrine, Hillary, were safely released today near Herkimer, NY. I'm waiting for more info such as who is Hillary, but I hope the two are bonded and can find a good nest site open to them if they are a bonded pair. That's all I know right now so don't ask for more info. I will of course post it if I get it!

ps:  I hope they find that empty nest box in Buffalo!

Just posted on Peregrine Place FB..

IMPORTANT NOTICE! The Peregrine falcon, HILLARY, is a RICHARDSON hatch, I think 2015! So we have DIAMANTE' and HILLARY, both released somewhere near Herkimer, NY.

Adding that Richardson is in Buffalo, where BB once nested before being removed!  I wonder where Hillary was picked up for rehab..she would know where Buffalo is too!

Herkimer is just a little over an hour from Syracuse by car (66 miles according to Mapquest).  Let's hope Diamante and Hillary steer clear of George and Pigott's territory as well.

From Barb Baldinger on Facebook:

One of your Buffalo offspring has been photographed in Sarnia, Ontario by a friend of my friend. The female Peregrine Falcon with the black/green, 60/BC band was banded in the nest box at the Central Terminal on 5/21/16. She was one of three out of three female chicks. Her parents were Gleig (f) from Hamilton Ontario, and Diamante (m) from Rochester, NY who came in 2012, ousting the pair who were there and taking over the nest box together. Her band is 1947-21597, and she was named Ginger upon banding.

So...the only notes I see on here from 2016 were 4 eggs, 2 hatched, one male injured at fledge time.

Does anyone know:
-Did the other 2 eggs hatch?
-Did the fledgling survive?
-What is his name? And the names of #3 & 4 if they did hatch?

Just when I thought I was finished getting the family tree updated. Shaky, the file WAS ready. I'll add Ginger.

On Saturday, June 1st, personnel from DEC and NYS Thruway Authority teamed up to band Peregrine Falcon chicks under the North Grand Island bridge. The eyasses (falcon chicks), about 20 days old, are given leg bands (photo 1), a health assessment (photo 2) and returned to the nest box. The female Peregrine, named Terrazzo, waits for her chicks to return to the nest (photo 3). Terrazzo was banded at the Central Train Terminal building in Buffalo in 2014. Dad, an unbanded bird, watches from a nearby perch under the bridge (photo 4).
