I think Bald Eagles nest at different times depending on where their nesting territory is and whether food is available.  Since fish are their primary source of food, Bald Eagles need unfrozen bodies of water, so eagles who nest around the Great Lakes, for example, have to wait until the lakes thaw.  In Kentucky, according the KY Fish & Wildlife website, "bald eagles usually lay eggs during January-March, but will begin nest building and repair as early as October."  Our big lakes and rivers (Ohio/Mississippi) typically stay open all winter, but even with a harsh winter when the lakes partially freeze over, they are almost guaranteed to be ice-free by the time the chicks hatch and parents have a couple of extra mouths to feed.  Obviously those Florida eagles have even more flexibility.

I learned, on some eagle-watching trip, that Bald Eagles typically nest within 200 miles of where they fledged.  So I guess if you're born on Lake Erie, you come down and spend the winter in Kentucky, but go back to Lake Erie to nest.  That's also why they specifically used hack-box techniques to reintroduce eagles to states where eagles had become extirpated.  For example, when no eagles were being born in Kentucky, Indiana, or Ohio, no eagles were returning to those states to nest.  So they took young eagles who were old enough to feed themselves and put them into artificial nests in those states so that once those birds fledged, they would return to the area to nest.  I visited one of the old hack-box sites where they did this in western Kentucky; they used a pulley contraption to lower food into the nest to the young eagles to avoid exposing them to humans.  Pretty remarkable effort and a pretty remarkable success story.

Thanks so much for all the information on the
Bald Eagle Patti.  I should have figured that there is a lot
of thought by the Bald Eagles to be so successful.
Again, thank you!

Great pic, Donna!

Early this morning it was raining heavily, and Harriet was soaked. A few minutes later, she got up and fed the eaglets, starting with the younger one. They both had their share.

Not sure what happened but as usual with more than 1 eaglet, one gets picked on! They should lay 1 egg. Sometimes baby eaglets are brutal to their sibs! Hard to watch, so I don't.

Sad news!!

Southwest Florida Eagle Cam
An update from our friends at CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc.:

It is extremely likely that the bald eagle brought in yesterday is Ozzie due to the photographs and description sent to us from the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam. It has been confirmed that the bald eagle does have a fractured clavicle and will need a few weeks of rehabilitation.

CROW appreciates the support from our SWFEC community and will provide further updates tomorrow on Ozzie's condition.

(http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r32/djweeds/OZZIE_zps1qb2z6al.jpg) (http://s140.photobucket.com/user/djweeds/media/OZZIE_zps1qb2z6al.jpg.html) OH NO!!!

CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc. has confirmed the bald eagle taken in for injuries yesterday is missing a talon on its left foot but cannot 100% confirm yet it is indeed our Ozzie.
They bald eagle is undergoing testing and we are confident through CROW's dedicated staff & resources, will receive the care it needs for recovery.
We hope to have a better update on the injuries & recovery time this afternoon.
We appreciate everyone's concern for the eagle and ask you respect CROW and the FWC's time and do not contact them directly. We will provide updates on the eagle when they are available here on the page and in chat.
Thanks for your patience during this time.  March 17th

Ozzie the bald eagle received his scheduled physical therapy and X-ray this morning. A callus, new bone development, has begun to develop and bridge his two fractured ends together. During the physical therapy session, Ozzie’s wings where measured for range of motion and stretched to prevent loss of mobility.
After physical therapy, Ozzie was returned to a small outside enclosure where he will stay for approximately one week without his body wrap. The next step will be to transfer him to a larger enclosure where he can strengthen his flight muscles.
Ozzie has been in the care of CROW for almost four weeks. No release date has been scheduled

Ozzie update:

Ozzie, the bald eagle from the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam has been moved to the small flight enclosure. He was scheduled to be relocated there last week, but due to inclement weather, he was moved to a smaller enclosure that had better coverage to protect him from the rain. Ozzie now has full range of motion of both wings and will continue to wear carpal bumpers and tail guard to prevent additional injury. In the small flight enclosure, Ozzie will have opportunity to take small flights to build his strength and fully expand his wings. No release date has been scheduled.

Harriet takes a bath at yonder pond. During her bath, an osprey swoops down at her and Harriet protests. Then an occupied "mud buggy" appears driving through the heavy brush in Harriet's direction. Eagles taking baths are completely vulnerable because they cannot fly away. That is one reason we see them looking all around before, during and after a bath. And yes, the actions of the vehicle owner have been reported to the property owners. Thank you Dick Pritchett Real Estate for maintaining such a suitable tree and environment for our Bald Eagle Family

BREAKING NEWS!!!

I know it's a different eagle, but it is a happy eagle story. OZZIE ... of Ozzie & Harriet Fame (Southwest Florida nest) has returned from his long absence. He had been released in late-July, but hadn't been seen since. Most had given up on his returning to Harriet, and she had seemed to take on a new male. Tonight, the game changed. Ozzie is back, and he chased the other male off several times, captured on video. Not only that, but Ozzie's identity has been confirmed by the anklet he was fitted with after rehab and before release. Lots of SEDs happening tonight. EAGLE ON

(Now I kinda feel bad for FV, who has wooed her for some time now). Sheesh, I'm never happy!!

From posts on BCAW:   :crying:

Good morning, Sun. 9/20/15. It was great to see Ozzie come flying in around 7:00. But then FV followed by Harriet arrived. Ozzie and FV are fighting over the territory. That's about all I can tell you at this time.

PB/FV is fighting for the territory Harriet is not helping neither one but is arriving and leaving with PB, Ozzie has new wounds to his lt foot and his stubby pinkie talon appears to be gone and site is bleeding. No one is at the nest know, remember FV/PB doesn't know who Ozzie is,PB is just protecting the nest, he's probably think where the heck this eagle came from!

PB=FV

From FB:
Ground reports coming in that Ozzie & M15 (previously known as PB/FV) have had various altercations. It has been reported that Ozzie lost a talon but is not seriously injured. All 3 eagles are in & out of the nest area and tension is high.

Just read this on FB:

"As many know Ozzie had not been seen in a week since he received an injury in a fight with M15 the young male that has been around Harriet since last spring. (M15 has not been seen in 4 days now)  CROW the hospital where Ozzie was treated and released from last June is on the way to pick up an injured banded eagle that has been found trapped in a barbed wire fence. Not sure of the exact details of removal (details will follow I'm sure) but someone local that posts to the site has wrapped the eagle and has a picture of him on her porch and said the injuries are covered in flies so not sure how long he may have been there. The folks on the FB site say the band # belongs to Oz so if that is the case I know they will update. Please say a prayer or think positive thoughts that they are able to successfully treat and save him..."

Poor Ozzie.. :(

It sure has been hard at so many nest areas this year Margaret. Ozzie (no official ID from SWFLECam but rescuer called in band number and has pics) has been picked up and is in the care of CROW again so I'm sure there s/be an update tomorrow. The foot/leg appears to be quite infected the girl that rescued him said as the injury is a week old now and he was covered in flies. She said he got into their pond, drank a lot of water and looked very strange and then apparently that is when he got caught in the barbed wire. He made no attempt to get away from her as she covered him with a blanket she said, so I'm thinking the infection may have spread and he is too sick to even try to fly or fight. For all we know he may have re-injured the shoulder and can't fly. He stayed still on her porch until CROW arrived.

I saw Ozzie's pic last night on the rescuer's FB page..the puncture wounds that he got on his left foot from the fight didn't look that bad..hard to tell from the pic, I guess.  He was all wet, just standing there looking at the camera. I wonder now what's happened to M15? He was so devoted to Harriet but hasn't been seen in days.  The commenters did ask the lady that rescued Oz to look around her property to see if there were any Eagles on the ground.

I felt the need to update you on Oliver the eagle that Benny Bruhling and I rescued back on March 2nd of this year, admidst the heartbreaking news of Ozzie getting injured again because there are some similarities between the two eagles. Oliver also was injured in a territorial fight with another eagle. We found him walking in a corn field not being able to fly. We didn't realize at first what was going on till the other eagle that he was fighting with appeared and attacked him on the ground. When the dust settled he had multiple wounds, a hole in his crop and 3 missing talons. Eventually he had to have one talon amputated but is slowly recovering and the last I heard he is in the flight pen which is the last step before release! heart emoticon The University of Minnesota Raptor Center will just give us monthly updates on Oliver's progress and the next one is October 22. I will keep you updated! heart emoticon

When I heard of confirmed fighting between Ozzie and M15 and saw the pictures I was terrified. It hit home hard because I had witnessed it first hand with Oliver. I have learned that eagles will fight for territory's for hours and sometimes days. They fight, retreat, rest up and fight some more. Territory fighting is brutal and can sometimes end up fatal. I'm thankful that Ozzie was rescued and now is in the care of CROW. He is in good hands and has a good chance of recovering just like Oliver did. I'm praying that M15 shows up soon otherwise I'm deeply concerned for his welfare. If he is injured I hope someone finds him and he can get the help he may need.

In the meantime we have to have to pray, have patience and come together as a united and supportive eagle family for Ozzie, M15, Harriet and CROW. It has been a very tough year for everyone for several losses and injuries in our vast eagle world.

CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ozzie, the bald eagle, co-star of the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam. Ozzie passed away last night at CROW due to complications from his recent injuries that included multiple severe lacerations and a broken toe in each foot. Ozzie was brought to CROW for a second time on Sunday, September 27, after he was found weak and injured in a North Fort Myers backyard. He arrived at CROW late at night in critical condition, unable to stand and fighting septicemia (a bacterial blood infection). It is highly likely these injuries were sustained from a fight with another bald eagle near the nest that was documented on the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam Facebook page. It was also reported that he had been entangled in barbwire.

A necropsy will be performed on Ozzie at the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study (SCWDS) at The University of Georgia and we will share those results with you when they become available. We would like to thank everyone for their support and unwavering belief in CROW during Ozzie’s rehabilitation and recent stay. Your endless words of encouragement carried the CROW staff through challenging times.

Twists & Turns of Harriet's Life- Nest Notes for Oct. 5-11

Harriet- Photo Capture by Kim Peck
Harriet has experienced her life being turned upside down several times over the last few years. These events happen in the blink of an eye. She experienced the loss of 2 Eaglets, E3 and E5, overcame her own balance problems and endured the eventual loss of her mate Ozzie. Harriet has exhibited her resilience and strength in adapting to her ever changing world.

Harriet was left to raise her Eaglet E6 alone when her mate Ozzie was found injured and gone for months. Observers of the Eagle Family knew that Ozzie was recuperating at CROW clinic for wildlife, but Harriet may have only known that Ozzie was gone. As she lamented Ozzie’s disappearance, many Eagles appeared to possibly vie for her attention and territory. One such standout was a young male Eagle who arrived with determination and fended off the other Eagles arriving in quick succession. He seemed inexperienced in some ways and was not well liked by either E6 or Harriett. He helped E6 learn the valuable lessons of how to protect the nest, the territory and food. When E6 embarked on the journey of discovering Eagle life, the young male suitor became Harriet’s constant companion. In time Harriet developed a tolerance and fondness for the young male.

Harriet seemed to be moving on with a new mate and following her instincts to propagate her species. When Ozzie was released from his stay at the wildlife clinic many wanted to see a fairytale ending with him and Harriet reuniting. The reality is that Ozzie took off away from the territory and was not seen for another 3 months. It had been said that Ozzie was a wise old Eagle and he would know what his limitations were. We as observers will never know the reasons why he left or where he went. He may have been close and hiding in plain sight.

Three months after his release back to the wild, Ozzie returned to the nest with great force. He assumed his protective role and drove the young male from the territory. Fierce battles for control between the two ensued after which Ozzie disappeared seeming to be injured. In a whirlwind of events the young male also disappeared a few days later. Ozzie was found injured once more and taken to Crow. Hope abounded and none were prepared to accept that Ozzie would not survive his fight to regain all he had lost. No one wanted to think that the young male lost his life in the battle, too.

Life progresses in the wild. Harriet was again left alone to deal with the loss of her potential mates and same scenario of other eagles entering into her territory. This time an even younger male Eagle stood out as the better defender. There were other Eagles lurking quietly around the territory at the same time. New day, new Eagle, new lesson seemed to be Harriet’s path. As nesting season began, Harriet was left without a clear choice of mates. The new younger male appeared much more inexperienced than the last. The new Sub Adult male seemed eager to learn the way of the Eagles but was not connecting with the bonding rituals. Will Harriet have time to retrain another potential mate?

Harriet’s dilemma became even more complicated when the first young companion returned one evening as stealthily as he disappeared. Harriet and the first companion now known as M15 have spent the past few days getting reacquainted. They seem comfortable with their arrangement. It is not known where the second Sub Adult has gone. He may not have been quite ready to settle down to family life or he may be off on a new adventure.

As the story of Harriet and her quest to further her species with a new mate continue we will learn many valuable lessons. We are learning to trust the Eagles in their struggle to survive. The twists and turns of their lives and their ability to rise up from the brink of disaster have afforded them their rightful respect and majesty. In memory of Ozzie.

After spending most of the night in the nest tree, Harriet & M15 bonded earlier this morning. This process forges trust and courtship between eagles.
This morning's bonding will most likely not result in fertile eggs as we have observed in past season's Harriet's most fertile time to be in November.

Strengthening the Bond- Weekly Nest Notes

The early mornings have been filled with vocal exchanges. Harriet and M15 have been spending more and more time together working on the nest and practicing their bonding/mating.  Their flights off the nest tree and away from the area together may be hunting and fishing expeditions. Harriet is possibly showing M15 the secret fishing places along the way. There are many things to be readied before eggs will be laid. Harriet continues to exert what looks like dominance over M15. Harriet needs to be assured that M15 will be a loyal mate and provide for her and their young.

M15 has been honing his skills on branch and stick delivery to the nest and Harriet voices her approval. Harriet continues to bring her favorite pine boughs. The nest is looking inviting and hopefully ready to welcome babies. M15 is diligent in defending the territory. Several immature Eagles ventured into the territory and another pair of Eagles perched nearby from time to time. As other birds soar through the pasture both Harriet and M15 vocalize their warnings and make it known that this is their domain. M15 escorted a beautiful young Eagle out of the area in his patrolling sweep of the pasture.

Harriet was viewed spending time in the nest overnight which seemed unusual. In the past Harriet was seen for longer periods of time in the nest when she was ready to lay eggs and after they were laid. She may have been taking advantage of a restful night’s sleep as M15 watched over the territory. At day break Harriet was on with her day and all was fine. With the cameras and 24 hour access we are learning daily there is not a “usual” way things go in the Eagle world. Harriet knows her role well and continues to educate M15 and the viewers. May we continue to watch the progression of the lives of Harriet and M15 as their bond grows stronger and trust the ways of the Eagle.

From FB:

The necropsy results for Ozzie, American bald eagle and internet sensation from the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam, are below and  explained in detail by Dr. Heather Barron, CROW's Hospital Director.

Necropsy performed by Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study (SCWDS).

FINAL DIAGNOSIS:  Bacterial sepsis secondary to trauma; anticoagulant rodenticide (brodifacoum) exposure.

Wounds sustained from fighting with another male eagle festered and allowed bacteria to enter Ozzie’s bloodstream. Unfortunately, by the time Ozzie presented to CROW the infection had spread throughout all his major organs and he was unable to overcome the bacteremia despite the use of very powerful intravenous antibiotics, intensive supportive care, and surgery to remove the necrotic tissue.

Ozzie was also tested for a large number of toxins. Although some low levels of certain kinds of toxins, such as rat bait poison, were found, it is unlikely that this was clinically significant in Ozzie’s case. Most raptors living in suburban areas will have at least traces of rodenticides in their system. But it is important to realize that pest control can have unintended, and potentially fatal, consequences for non-target species. Please talk to your pest control company about making the most environmentally and wildlife friendly choices available.

Harriet and M15 are becoming more and more in sync as they continue their well timed turns at incubating. In a few short weeks their team work will hopefully reward them with two beautiful eaglets hatching into the world. Harriet and M15 have labored tirelessly to ensure this will happen. Harriet takes the overnight shift but has been seen coaxing M15 to get up and off the eggs. She uses the gentlest nudges and soft vocals in her communication to him.

Sadly, E8 has fishing line wrapped tightly around his leg, resulting in swelling of the leg.  The good news is that there's going to be an intervention!

From FB-

E8 UPDATE: We are currently working with the state & federal wildlife agencies, the FWC and USFWS, and the staff at our local permitted wildlife rehabilitation center, CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc., to arrange a timely rescue of E8 from entangled fishing line.

Because E8's leg is swollen, CROW will observe the eaglet and make a decision to remove from the nest for further care at their clinic. If this occurs, once medically stable, it will be returned to the nest.

Because of the sensitivity of the situation, we will be pausing live streaming shortly & all ground visitors will also be asked to leave the area to avoid further disturbance during the rescue attempt. This is for the safety of everyone, particularly the eagles.

Reminder to all viewers - please not call or email the FWC or CROW about the situation. It is being handled by the appropriate parties.

Look how cute!! E8's therapy!!

UPDATE: E8 (#16-361) is bright and alert and continues to show signs of improvement. The eaglet continues to receive physical therapy and a warm pack on its feet 3 times a day to help reduce swelling. E8’s appetite is strong and is steadily gaining weight.

Update from FB!  E8 is being released back to the nest today!   :2thumbsup:

E8 RELEASE UPDATE- After 3 days in the care of CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc., E8 has been cleared for release & will return back to the nest with E7, Harriet & M15 today! The release will happen early this afternoon and we will again be pausing live streaming for the safety of all involved, most importantly the eagles.

E8’s injury was caused by improperly discarded fishing line that ended up in the nest. You can help reduce litter and save all kinds of wildlife by properly disposing of or recycling fishing line and other litter. Learn more about MyFWC's Monofilament Recovery & Recycling Program at the link below.

Many thanks to all for your support! Stay tuned here for updates on E8's release.

I hope so too!  E7 is a lot bigger than E8 right now and could really hurt him if he starts the bonking again.  I've been watching for a few minutes and E8 is breathing quite hard and got awfully close to the edge.  A parent was standing close..seems confused as to what's going on? Hope this ends well.

E8 is not doing well and needs a rescue. E7 is pummeling his poor sib.

Today at 5:24pm SWFL
AEF, will rescue this eaglet if given the go ahead from USFWS. They said they will take the eaglet out of the nest and raise it at the AEF. They are precluded by an active nest, until given the go ahead. Let me be clear, they want to do the rescue! But their hands are tied by Federal law. If they are given the go ahead, and enough pressure is applied. Then they will be willing to go into the nest......Phone: 239/561 8144

E8 had a wonderful feed by his mom last night, after E7 went to sleep, and he got another feed that filled his crop this AM.  Whoever posted this on FB should just walk away from the computer like I did yesterday..it was tough to watch.  The Pritchetts have made it well known they will not allow any intervention that involves what happens naturally in the wild..survival of the fittest..and will turn the cameras off if people keep posting numbers to call for any rescue.  This was posted on BCAW this AM..gives a great insight on the horrors of bonking.

Thank you for this posting.I had no idea that this is part of eagle life.I am always learning.  :good post:

Bonking by older siblings goes on in Eagle nests every year but SWFL Eaglets are notorious for it.  Yesterday, not only was E7 pecking viciously on E8's head but was pulling and biting on its wings.  Poor E8 was in submissive posture all day until last night. After E7 got a huge feeding and was too sleepy to bonk, E8 finally got a wonderful feed from Harriet.  From what I've read, Eagle parents won't encourage Eaglets to eat, unlike Peregrines..unless they come to the food and show an interest in being fed, they don't get any food.  E8 started out bonking E7 back before he was taken from the nest for removal of the fishing line but has shown a great fear of E7 since returning. So far today, it's been a good day with both Eaglets getting 2 good feeds.  E7 has given E8 a couple bonks for good measure but nothing like the past couple days..hope it continues!

Official Statement from AEF President, Al Cecere:

"Greetings to the followers and supporters of SWFEC and all eagle cam enthusiasts!

It was brought to the American Eagle Foundation's attention that many concerned individuals have been stating that the AEF wants to rescue E8 from its SWFL nest. It has also been stated that we are actively asking people to call the USFWS to put pressure on them to let us complete this rescue.

We wanted to quell these rumors and ensure everyone that this is not true. Whatever information that is being passed around must have been the result of a misinterpretation/misunderstanding.

The AEF only considers intervening with wild nests when there is an absolute need or direct imminent danger that is acknowledged by the USFWS. It is always best for an Eaglet to be raised by its wild parents if possible.

That said, AEF is always willing to offer rehabilitation to any bird of prey in need of it, and is always willing to help an eaglet that needs to be rehabilitated and introduced back into the wild in the most non-intrusive way, such as through the AEF’s Eaglet Hacking Program (Eaglet Hacking is the process of introducing an eaglet into the wild with little to no direct human interaction in a natural setting from a undisturbed nesting tower).

Initially, when the eaglet was in danger (due to line wrapped around its ankle) and was taken to CROW for rehabilitation, AEF reached out to the USFWS and offered the services of its Hacking Program, but only if the eaglet needed extensive rehabilitation and would not be able to return to the nest in a timely manner. After USFWS thanked the AEF for their offer and informed them that the eaglet was well enough to be placed back in the nest, the AEF was thrilled to hear that it would not need any subsequent human intervention and is not planning to pursue the matter further unless specifically requested by the USFWS.

The AEF is always excited to hear about the success of any wild nest. We are all rooting for E8 and this newly bonded pair!

Respectfully,

Al
www.eagles.org (http://www.eagles.org)"

From CROW FB-

CROW continues to receive numerous questions regarding why we cannot remove E8 from its nest at Southwest Florida Eagle Cam.  Dr. Barron, hospital director at CROW, has provided a statement below that we hope will answer some of your questions.

"Siblicide is well known among bald eagles with the smaller eaglet generally disappearing between the third and eighth week in most surveys. Some research data shows that less than 10% of hatched eaglets will survive to reach maturity. Siblicide is an adaptive behavior that increases survival chances for both the parents and the remaining sibling. This is what natures intends and humans interfering with this upsets the balance of nature. CROW is not allowed to intervene in normal eagle behavior, which includes siblicide. Federal permission was sought to remove the eaglet from the nest previously and was granted based on the eaglet being entangled in a man-made line. E8 was always smaller than E7 and rivalry existed between the two prior to CROW’s intervention last week. While it is hard to watch, it ensures survival of the fittest and permission from U.S. FWS will not be granted to CROW to intervene in this display of normal eagle behavior.”

E8 has gotten some great feeds past 2 days with minor bonks from E7! M15 has been keeping the pantry full..great dad!

Eagle cams are difficult to watch and probably should come with a warning. We need to remember that the purpose of the cam is to learn how eagles behave in the wild. It is not meant to save every eagle chick that hatches. It is wrong to meddle with their lives unless, like this time with fishing line entanglement, the problem is man-made. Unfortunately the second chick is little more than insurance and often does not survive. I don't like it, but that's what eagles do. We watch to learn, not to interfere. Putting pressure on cam operators to meddle with eagle lives does not show respect for nature.

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA EAGLE CAM·TUESDAY, 1 MARCH 2016
Nest mates E7 and E8 are progressing each day as young eaglets. E7 has been mastering aggressiveness and is mostly first to eat at meal delivery. E8 gains courage and learns new ways to get to the food by staying out of the way and slowly making a move when the time is right. E8 is becoming more assertive and eager grabbing a good share at mealtime. All these skills are valuable for young Eagles to learn for their survival. Their growth and lessons are in high gear as Mom and Dad provide nourishment and guidance.
E7 and E8 have natural curiosity in their near and far environment. They are picking up and moving sticks and grasses to help Mom and Dad with “nestorations”. E8 searches the nest for any leftover food morsels. They waddle to the nest edge to peer over at the outside world. Wing flapping in the breezes and standing tall for longer periods all help them grow stronger each day.
Harriet and M15’s bond grows stronger as they care for their young. They have managed to spend some time together at the pond and perched in some of their favorite place. Their view is always focused on their nest and the precious cargo it holds. M15 has grown into a strong Eagle Dad and Harriet continually demonstrates the strength she possesses as Eagle Mom. All the bonds are strengthening daily in their growth as Eagle family. Nest Notes by dadsjazz

Post by: Donna on 07-May-16, 09:28:47 PM

I have been watching this story throughout the day and thought it a good idea to post what we know for sure and what we don’t know.  A cam viewer reported at about 3am Sat that it looked like an owl had attacked the nest and the eaglets and since that time E8 has not been seen.  The owl attack has not been confirmed, but what is confirmed is that E8 has not been seen all day.  Both eaglets have fledged and are able to fly, so E8 really could be anywhere.   It is unusual for a newly fledged eaglet to leave the nest area, but not unheard of.   It is also important to remember that the eaglets are bigger than the owls at this point in their life, so it is not at all likely that owl, if there an attack, would have carried E8 away or anything like that.  If E8 was seriously injured, it would be likely that he would be on the ground near the nest and many folks have been looking all day and have not seen E8 -although it is not clear whether the fields have been searched directly on the ground.  So talons crossed that E8 is just away, perhaps startled or scared away, but it is reasonably likely that all is okay.    I hope that helps a little bit with the worries.  We will all feel better if E8 pops up again on cam for sure, but all we can do at this point is trust that lots of people are watching for him and keep everyone posted.

News!!! E8 Has Been Found! ...colonthree emoticon...
One week after the owl attack, we are beyond relieved to see this news! An injured E8 has been found and receiving care at CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc.. Radiographs showed a right leg femur fracture (broken leg) that will require surgery this weekend. We will share more details & updates as they are available.

A juvenile American bald eagle was found injured near the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam earlier today and brought to ‪#‎CROWClinic‬. After photo identification and other factors such as location and condition of the eagle, it is strongly believed to be E8. The eagle arrived thin, dehydrated and very weak. Radiographs showed a right leg femur fracture (broken leg) that will require surgery this weekend. E8 is currently in critical condition and will remain on strict cage rest. The prognosis is guarded and CROW veterinarians will have more information after surgery is complete.

E8 update-from FB

CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc.

E8 has been quiet, alert and responsive and has not regurgitated any food the last couple of days and was fed soft pieces of rat today. E8 was observed to be hock sitting and for the remainder of the time is in the prone position (laying flat with the chest down and back up) and has been moved to a larger enclosure to encourage movement. Although positive signs, E8 is still receiving pain medication and remains in critical and guarded condition. Thanks for your endless support.

Update on E8 on FB..

Today, E8 received a second radiograph (x-ray) since the eaglets operation on Saturday, May 14. E8’s condition was upgraded to guarded based on blood work and clinical condition but
protein levels are still dangerously low. The fracture site and pin placement from the surgery look good and today E8 was able to stand and walk normal but still spends a majority of time down and sleeping.
The eaglet is responding to intensive care and is moving from a predominately liquid diet to a soft solids diet. Body weight has increased but E8 still remains extremely thin.
Although E8 still has a lengthy recovery, it was encouraging that the eaglet was willing to bear weight on its leg and use its foot and claw in a normal fashion which indicates normal nerve function.
We will have the next update available on Monday.

Today's update on E8--encouraging news!

E8 continues to show signs of improvement. This morning the eaglet was bright and alert during surgical wound care cleaning and blood work. E8 ate some herring fillets on its own yesterday and weighs approximately 8.5 pounds. The eaglet was fully standing this morning and vocalizing after treatment. E8 remains in guarded condition.
We will have another update on Wednesday.

Update from CROW:

E8 UPDATE: E8 continues to be bright, alert, responsive and using the right leg in a normal fashion.  The eaglet is being fed whole prey items such as mice and chicks, but is not eating on its own and requires assisted feedings of fish fillets. E8 continues to gain weight and currently weighs a little over 8 lb.

The next update will be this Tuesday when E8 is scheduled for radiographs (x-rays) and blood work.  We will also be answering some of your questions next week regarding leg banding and how to identify E8's gender.

Below is a video of E8 receiving wound care earlier this week.
Again, thank you for your continued support and donations.

E7 has not been seen at the nest since Tuesday. At 121 days, it is normal for the juvenile eagle to venture out further into the area and eventually leave the nest for good. With the fundamental skills for survival learned, we hope E7 will fly high & free for many years to come.

Latest E8 update..good news!

E8 UPDATE: #E8 continues to improve since having surgery on May 14 to repair a broken femur in the right leg.  The eaglet is perching, vocalizing and gaining strength. Over the weekend E8 ate a little on his own but still requires some assistance during feeding.  Blood work came back normal and this week the eaglet is expected to be moved to an outside enclosure where it will have more room to build its strength and spread its wings.

E8 UPDATE: E8’s IM pin (intramedullary pin) which is used to join fracture bones has been removed  from the right leg. Additional pins remain in the eaglets right leg and will be removed as the leg continues to improve.   Since being moved to the outside small flight enclosure last week,  the eaglet has been bright, alert and perching on higher perches.  E8 still requires assisted feedings but recently ate full rats and a large fish on its own.

          Great news! :2thumbsup:

You're welcome!
I knew that infection was always a possibility but was so sad it became a reality when he ended up developing one. It definitely is a concern. He's been through so much in his short life..hopefully he gets over this hurdle as well.

E8 update..good news!  :2thumbsup:

E8 UPDATE: We have received #E8's bacterial culture test results and they indicate that the antibiotics have improved the bone infection.  The eaglet will receive an oral and safer antibiotic for the next couple of weeks to clear the remainder of the infection.  The radiographs (X-rays) show overall improvement and blood work remains positive.  E8 continues to eat on its own and is bright, alert and responsive. The eaglet will continue to receive daily conditioning to help build strength and endurance.

SWFL ~ CROW E8 UPDATE: E8 continues to do well in the outside flight enclosure. The eaglet is receiving an oral antibiotic to clear the remainder of the infection and will continue to receive daily conditioning to help build strength and endurance.
Next week, E8 will receive an exam to review the progress of the bacterial infection and overall health. We won't have an update until that time unless there are any new developments.
We thank you for your continued support.

 goodnews:  from CROW!

E8 UPDATE: E8’s leg infection has improved and no longer requires antibiotics.  The eaglets pectoral muscles have increased in strength and this will help build endurance, agility and flight duration.  E8 is eating very and will soon be introduced to live prey to assist with the development of natural hunting instincts.  E8 will continue to receive daily conditioning and the carpal bumpers  and tail guard have been removed.  The eaglet currently weighs 7.9 pounds.

Update on E8 from CROW  :2thumbsup:

E8 UPDATE:  E8 received an exam this morning and continues to improve and show great progress.   The eaglets flying skills have become more coordinated and is using both feet to land and no longer favorites the right leg.

As part of E8’s rehabilitation, the eaglet will continue to receive daily conditioning and live prey training.  Once E8 successfully completes the live prey training, a release will be scheduled.

We will provide another update early next week. Thanks again for the continued support.

Great update on E8 by CROW

E8 UPDATE: E8 has been cleared for release by CROW's veterinary staff and will be returned to the wild in the near future. E8 has been successfully catching rats during live prey testing and continues to improve on the skills needed for catching live fish.

E8's stay at CROW was extended to ensure vital hunting skills were effectively developed. In Florida, approximately 80 percent of a bald eagles diet is fish, so this will continue to be the focus for the remainder of the eaglets rehabilitation at #CROWClinic.

We will be filming the release and will share all the details at a later date.  Thanks for your AMAZING support throughout E8's rehabilitation.

E8 update

E8 UPDATE: E8 has successfully been catching fish during the remainder of his live prey testing. CROW's veterinary staff is pleased to see that E8 is using both the left and right talon to catch the fish.

E8 is almost 7 months old and the mortality rate for eagles during their first year of life is greater than 50%, but once they have learned to hunt and forage successfully their chances of reaching adulthood are improved. CROW’s Wildlife Rehabilitators and hospital staff have worked diligently to ensure the eaglet has the basic hunting skills needed to survive when returned to the wild.
