I would say it's some event happening at the Blue Cross Arena, but not at 4:30 in the morning.  Maybe the security guards at the Blue Cross Arena wanted to freak the security guards at the library out, so they put on a special light show just for them.  ;D Or perhaps one of the homeless people who take shelter in the aqueduct has found the switch.

No, Beauty is on the northwest corner of the actual roof the dead bird was on the northeast corner of the upper brick part of the building. That would be to her left(Beauty) and up. I'll find a pic of the building and point it out. Give me a few minutes.  :gum:

Donna, I was just posting the closeup at the same time when I saw your post.  Now we don't have 2 legs to confirm. Soon the same thing will happen to Pigott's right band. At least she is black/black and Beauty is black/green.

I liked the tape! Oh well, it happens!

The tape makes it so much easier to identify, especially when other birds enter the territory.

I don't see any sign of the foot infection from last year...excellent!

I could see why you thought that, it's all about the lighting. Remember last year we thought DC was another male in the nest? We saw green when it was actually Black. Light plays a big part.  :surprise:

I don't feel very lucky.  We are getting dumped on here in Rochester!  I was at a friend's house this evening and what is normally a 35 minute drive home for me took me an hour and fifteen minutes.  I have rarely seen this much snow fall this fast.   :o I'll bet the morning commute will be fun.

The morning commute was no problem for me. Just wet roads. The snow plows and salt trucks did a good job over night.

Commute was good for me, too. Especially since I took the bus!    :happy:

UT was very nervous and "squeaky" inside the NB. He looked directly into the cam (3?), stared briefly, was startled and wildly flapped away. He's quite the handsome tiercel. City life must make him edgy.

He has a few identifying marks.

He's really a good looking tiercel and I love his expressions. Great to see he's so confident and not afraid of the nest box  :2thumbsup:

I'm trying to figure out if he has a tiny strip of white feathers a bit left of center over his cere or if it's a feather stuck to his cere. I though I saw it yesterday too. Time will tell!

That is what it looks like. And I also noticed his head feathers are darker in a stripe in the center & paler over his eyes.

After checking the markings, in my opinion this is not Dot.ca. This tiercel does not have the distinctive white above the cere.

Are you kidding me? Another male with a black band with a Y?? Why would B go in the nest with him, took her long to go in with UT?? Boy, they sure do know how to confuse!

Now that I looked longer at the pic, I did not see a white cere, I was too focused on the leg band! Saw the Y and yikes!! Looking for the heart mustache too!

I have them up side by side on my pc - a photo I saved from the cam last year of him and beauty in the same pose and looks like DC to me...I uploaded to flickr but it won't allow me to uplaod the full size so you won't be able to tell but the markings look the same in that position.  The difference today is in the primaries...something looks funny in the back end but if he's been scuffling that would make sense.

And I'm reserving judgement. His head is moving in the one main cam shot, so the white cere could be obscured. There were times last year I did a double take because it wasn't clearly apparent.

I know this probably isn't funny...but at first glance when I saw that shot of Beauty and her stance and face...my first thought was she was looking like 'oh crap he's back'.   :whistle:

Just trying to find something to smile about; hopefully tomorrow will see all Rochester falcons safe and sound.

After the way they behaved last year, I often wonder how they would greet each other in 2013.

You're right Carly it is difficult to see. I'm only using my cell phone cuz I don't have access to a computer right now. There are other slight differences that may be due to the posture as well - the chest does not have that pure white look of DC, and the markings with the auricular patch don't look identical.

I guess what I'm saying is I'm not convinced yet. Y may be a common bottom letter just like V was used in Rochester & Syracuse for a couple years. I think it may be a Canadian bird probably banded same year or similar location, unless DC was the only male with the letter Y.

Ps:  Joyce, you are correct.  'Y' is used most often up here to denote males and 'X' is for females - the past few years anyway.  I know in the last 2 years they've started using other letters because they were running out of number/letter combinations.  I know at Jack's other site they used 'w' the one year for the boys.

Phooey...I wish we had the rest of the band ID. It may be one of the eyases that some of the Rochester watchers got to see at banding time.

The cere is different and the pattern of dark and white on the lower side of the head, as you go up towards the eye - that doesn't look the same, ***BUT*** the angle of the photos, although very similar (good job selecting photos!), is different enough to leave room for doubt!! They're feathers, after all, and a little change in angle will change the way the pattern looks. I guess someone will see the band sooner or later...

Yes this looks like UT. He has a small part white part of his auricular patch that is vertical. I try to visualize it as thumbs up. His malar strip is wide as in the pics.

He also has the dark feathers above the cere that go up the head.

Possible scenario right now - Intruder may not be DC because he is not appearing at BS that we know of. I believe this aggressive behavior is another male chasing resident male from the territory because it is the best Rochester nest site.

Beauty is not fickle when she bonds with a mate, plus she has copulated with UT and her number one priority is her scrape for laying eggs. Until she feels UT will not return, I doubt she will consider bonding with this new male.

If it is DC, she will likely join with him based on her instinct to reproduce, but she won't give up her nestbox.

Right now I consider UT the resident male since B has bonded & copulated with him. 

Ahh, OK-I was confused!  Looks like the resident male has been chased out or worse since no signs of him since yesterday.  Poor Beauty has never had an easy time since she landed in Rochester-good thing she's so strong and committed!

Beauty has certainly earned my respect in these changing times for Peregrines.

I'd say new guy's malar stripe is wider with straighter edges and the white part of his chest appears deeper than BST. But the angle and lighting is way different and that can change a lot.

I bet it was DC in the nest box too. The behavior sure fits him...stooping on Beauty.  I wonder if it was Pigott too. Interesting because when Brain Mak, Kathy and I saw three in the sky on the 18th, none of the falcons were the same size. One was large, the 2nd mid-size, and the 3rd definitley a tiercel.

I'll say this much for DC-he sure knows how to make an entrance!  :whistle:

Well it didn't take DC long to swoop down, grab that cache and fly off with it.
It happened so fast, the cams didn't catch it. After that Carol can tell her events along with the others!
It was strange there for a while.  :surprise:

I thought I saw DC fly off with the prey on the archives.

Bonnie, did you see him on the Live cam or the stills? My Ustream was frozen just at that moment when he took it. Couldn't find any pics in the stills.

At the 16:25 mark on cam 1, I see a Falcon flying just above the porch area. Could be him?  I remember Beauty would cache food last year by the main cam, in case Orion needed something during the night.  Maybe she wanted a quick snack in case she was trapped by DC and couldn't get any food and foolishly thought he wouldn't see it?  I don't think DC is in the food gift stage yet. My opinion...

Maybe B brought it for him but he just wouldn't come down to get it until she left, then he snatched it! Peace offering? Jeez, who knows!

I agree that it was some kind of offering. He was already perched above her when she brought the prey to the platform, and she was e-chupping the entire time until she finished caching it. It seemed like she was trying to grab his attention.

Plus, she didn't leave with it.

Thanks, Donna, for the excellent photos and recap.  I also think it was an offering from Beauty.  She seemed quite relaxed as she waited for DC to take it, even dozing occasionally, with one eye open, of course.  Whatever it was, it sure was fun to watch.  And it sure beat all that swooping!

DC is currently splitting his time between and Beauty and Pigott. No other tiercels are being observed making regular visits to either location. However, the situation could change at any time.

I thought the course of events were: migrator returns, courts female by offering her gifts of food, bonding at the nest site and flying displays.  If she accepts him, knowing he is strong and a good provider, then she mates with him. DC swoops on her for days, no offers of food that we are aware of, no nest bonding but yet she mates with him.  What's wrong with this picture?  :confused:

Beauty and DC are too busy re-writing the falcon manual!   Perhaps Doc. ca needs to know that SHE is strong and a good provider.  She wasn't in great shape last  year when she came back from rehab, and then Unity - his bonded mate for a short time - disappeared.  

also remember he did bow to her when he first got back...she didn't bow back. I think she liked UT better.

DC wants nest box for himself and Pigott, Beauty has nest box, but wants babies. I wonder if when the watchers saw two of the same size battling if it was Pigott and Beauty, and Pigott isn't strong enough to take B. so B & DC are making the best of the situation. NO male can get past DC and P can't evict B so he is keeping the territory by being with B.

The female judges how many eggs to lay by how well the male demonstrates that he can provide food for a family. If Dot.Ca keeps taking food instead of supplying it who knows if we'll have any eggs downtown.  :rolleyes:

It was hard for me to tell by the pics who brought it in but apparently he ended up with it and took it to Pigott.

Oh boy, not again!  :(

B&DC flew in simultaneously with the prey, and B either had it then or immediately after they arrived.   She had it at the nestbox for about two minutes before DC took it away.  A few minutes later he showed up with a small food package in Brighton.

Not sure if DC will be like Jack is but here is a bit a run down of what happens when egg laying starts here:

Our site - his primary site - goes first; I often wondered this past year if it would go by who his longer tenured mate was but as O'Connor is his newer mate she still has gone first this year.  Last year she did only by virtue of the fact that Angel was displaced mid egg laying so I wasn't sure.  So anyway, he spent I'd say equal time with both then as O'Connor got closer to laying eggs - he was at our site I'd say 70% of the time, feeding her and mating with her and that decreased gradually as she started laying eggs.  

Now that she's incubating, he only shows up to feed her and give her breaks by incubating.  He's now focusing more on TR Mom as she gets ready to lay her eggs.  There seems to be about 7 -10 days between first hatch at our site and the TR Site.  I'm guessing this is so he can be here more the first 10 days when it's critical for the kids to be covered and then by the time the 10 days is up - the other eggs will start hatching and he can cover TR Mom more during that time.  Whether that's on purpose or just by accident I can't say but given it's happened for the 3 years he's been running two sites - I'd say it is likely intentional if only for the fact that he can't be in two places at once and egg production takes a lot of resources and time put in.

When both are incubating the eggs, he'll go back and forth and spends a lot of time hunting and patrolling the territory.  I can't say DC will do that as he's not had the experience Jack has under his belt but worth keeping an eye out to see if it works out that way.  Be better if it does for the survival of any offspring for sure.  

As DC has been home a few weeks now and started mating with Pigott first, I'd say it's likely she will be laying eggs this week or by the weekend at least - assuming he's been keeping up with duties with her.

I think Pigott and DC look a lot alike.   Looking at the series of photos posted above by Donna, they are hard to distinguish at first glance. 

Maybe that's why he likes her so much...

I was at the banding of both! CPF was invited to Pigotts banding and Tracy and I went. DotCa not only was I at his banding but rescued him at fledge time.

Wow, Frank!!!!!  What had happened to Dotca that caused him to need rescuing?

I'm pretty sure he's one of the ones that was stuck on an apartment balcony.

I think now that Pigott has been at the nest box (and bowing with Dot.Ca no less) that we had all better prepare ourselves for a battle. Just sayin'   

 :'(  That's what I've been thinking.  I've been wondering if it may have already happened since no one has posted any pictures recently of Beauty at the NB and no falcons other than the one at BS have been located recently.  Darn I have to go home now so can't keep monitoring this site.  Just when I was hoping we'd have a fairly uneventful season with two successful scrapes.

MAK - first, thank you for going down today, as I know you have not been feeling well.  I hope you feel better soon.

I think you are right.  DC almost seemed to invite her to the box, and the bonding was much different - as you guys have observed and reported in your watch reports. It really was so strange to hear her first, then see her. 

I'm so glad Beauty came back unharmed.  I was really worried about her!
