Cam back up, and she's on the nest - looks comfy.  I saw earlier when they were zoomed in on her head, and it definitely looks like Lady.  The male has appeared and Ranger Emma said he was comfortable with her and they mated.  I'm ready to yell YIPPEE!  :yahoo:

She is that, Bobbie!  I wish we had some spotters down in Spain and France, who would keep an eye out for last year's little one.  I'm hoping that only his transmitter has failed and he's enjoying the fishing there.

They're seeing some inconsistencies in her appearance but if this is her, I'm thrilled! As for Blue 44, I have hope that he's still alive and the transmitter malfunction is only problem!

It started out as a quiet day on the nest, no fish and just the occasional change over as normal. Then he did it again, he left the eggs unattended for about half an hour. She was actually sitting on the Squinty Tree ,which is very near the nest, preening but obviously hadn’t seen him leave. It was only when he flew overhead that she raced back to the nest and settled down quickly all the time making it very clear she wasn’t happy with him. He must’ve taken heed as he reappeared a short while later with a big Brown Trout, this was super quick as he left and returned with the headless fish 12 minutes later. Notably he found time to eat the head before he came back!

In other Osprey news Blue YD is still on the Senegalese Coast, he has been moving round a bit and last week he was only 100km from Dakar in the south and then only 10km away from St Louis in the north. He just seems to be cruising up and down the coast.

A cool, wet and rather dreary day today at Loch of the Lowes, in complete contrast to yesterdays stunning warm sunshine- which makes us so grateful that our male bird choose yesterday to leave the eggs undefended for an hour , not today!

Just the one fish delivery to the nest today by our male so far, though he did return with a second fish this afternoon which his mate didn’t seem interested in at all, so he took it away again.

Osprey Diary Frid 17th May: A Worrying Day
Posted on May 17, 2013 by rangeremma
A worrying day at the Loch of the Lowes Osprey nest with the four eggs again left alone by the male bird- thankfully they survived over an hour on their own before the females return to incubation duties this morning.

At 8.32am the male left the nest- why? Well, there were no signs of intruders or disturbance by people on the loch, and there was no agitated behaviour from the male. Was he simply ‘distracted’ or did he think the female was on her way in to take over- there have been times when the birds seem to miss their cue so to speak.

The eggs were left until 9.42am when the female returned and resumed normal incubation. This means a total of 1hr 10mins exposure for the eggs- the big question is: is this long enough to do them damage?

Firstly, we should say, at least they weren’t predated during that time- a real stroke of luck. Secondly, in their favour, it was a glorious warm spring morning with little wind, so the eggs shouldn’t have chilled too much, or conversely dried out too much (eggs need humidity in the shell to make them easy to hatch).

Thirdly, how long is too long for osprey eggs? No one really knows. I have heard stats as varied as 15minutes, and 2hours quoted, but it all depends on the weather at the time. It is even unclear as to whether the stage of development of the embryo inside the eggs makes a difference- that is, if eggs left exposed later during the incubation month are better off than those left early.

All we can do now is wait- it is only just over a week until the first egg is due to hatch so we will soon know if they have survived this unscheduled abandonment.

Otherwise today, the male fished on the loch in front of the hides, taking a nice Perch which he brought back to his mate about an hour later.

Hope one or more hatch!

Still we wait, and wait. We have not yet given up hope for osprey eggs hatching at this nest this year, contrary to some newspaper reports.

Whilst egg number one is now ‘overdue’ , tomorrow is still only day 40 for egg two ( within normal range) and eggs 3 and 4 are all still to play for so to speak, as they are not even ‘due’ until tomorrow and Monday at the earliest. Whilst we have some concerns due to the eggs being exposed during incubation, the parents behaviour has been completely normal so we should still remain open-minded.

It is important to remember that this is an aged female bird who has already done more than any other osprey we know of to produce young and help repopulate the area, so really any chicks now are a bonus.

Our Osprey nest watch, protecting the birds form disturbance 24hrs a day, 7 day a week, would not be possible with  a small army of volunteers who generously contribute time every year. These range from locals who do  couple of hours every week, to full time residential volunteers who contribute 2 months here on the reserve. Two of these wonderful people are leaving us this week, and it seems a good time to say a HUGE THANKYOU to them for all their hard work, patience and perseverance. Julien and Rachel are both going onto to other exciting ecology projects, and we wish the very very best in their conservation careers.

Looking good!   :yahoo:

Osprey diary, posted June 1, 2013 by Ranger Emma:

After such a long and anxious wait , we finally have an osprey chick safely hatched at Loch of the lowes.

About 8.45am our wildlife Interpretation officer Val Gall and volunteer Rebbecca spotted the first signs in one of the eggs. This tiny hole and subsequent crack progressed remarkable quickly to a full hatching. The top came off the egg, and by about 10am the chick was free of the egg shell.

The male brought in a fish around 11.30am but the chick is yet to have its first meal ( this is normal as it still has some yolk internally to sustain it.)

More news soon.

champagne being cracked!

Update 4pm:

Celebrations all round here, with staff, volunteers and visitors alike glued to the sight of our first Osprey chick of 2013 here at Loch of the Lowes. We hope it might be joined in time by another sibling, but for now we are simply overjoyed with one healthy youngster on the nest.

We think this is probably egg number 3 hatching  ‘on time’, rather than egg number 2 being ‘late’, but as the eggs are so hard to tell apart, we will have to wait and see if any of the others hatch to be sure.

The chick has already been fed twice by its mother , tiny amounts of shredded raw fish- you can see the female has stashed some fish , tucking it under her whilst incubating , to ensure there is plenty available to give the chick ‘little and often’  meals.

The chick looks strong and healthy, with its instinct to reach up for food just as it should be. It is absolutely normal for new hatched chicks to find it difficult to lift their heads up (weak neck muscles) and have poor balance.

Thank-you to everyone who has called, emailed and tweeted- its lovely to know so many people worldwide are sharing our excitement and joy at this wee ones arrival. It’s the birds who deserve the congratulations though- especially our remarkable veteran female, who has done it again!

  Still only 1

Our osprey chick goes from strength to strength here at Loch of the Lowes, and is already considerably bigger than when it hatched on Saturday. There have been plenty of fish today- the poor male keeps sitting on the edge of the nest  as if ‘asking’ to be allowed to take a turn at incubation like he used to, but our female stubbornly refuses to budge, being very possessive of her chick.

The longest day started overcast & dreich but the saying “rain before 7 – off by 11″ was certainly true on the loch.

So far it has been peaceful at the nest with no intruders. Our female has been at the nest all day with just short flights over the loch. The chick is growing rapidly & is now 20 days old. It is developing a wonderful ginger tint & as viewers of our webcam will have noticed, is very mobile around the nest. Both adults continue to add occasional sticks to the nest to keep the chick secure.
Our male brought a brown trout to the nest at about 1pm & it was soon devoured by female & chick.

The reserve is packed with fledglings & adults are busy collecting flies & caterpillars to feed them. Yellowhammer were spotted feeding two chicks near bushes outside the visitor centre this morning. Visitors to the hides have been treated to great sightings of male & female reed buntings, willow warblers & blackcap.

There were huge numbers of Canada geese & many goslings. The goosander females are fortunate to still have small armadas of young following – one has 4 of her original 6, another amazingly has 11 of her 13. Pike are probably the main reason for their losses.

The great crested grebes nesting in the lily pads are very photogenic just now being surrounded by newly opened yellow waterlilies. The male is quite spectacular in his defense efforts when others enter his tolerance zone. He flattens his body onto the water & raises all his head feathers becoming a formidable sight to intruders. If that is not enough to enforce a quick exit then he charges from the depths towards the daring upstarts ensuring their spectacular running take off in retreat!

Most of the trees have reached full leaf & the early lime green leaves have darkened. The abundance of emerging insects are feeding swallows, swifts, house martins & sand martins by day.

It is now peak season for bats to deliver their pups & perfect timing to also take advantage of insects during the few hours of summer darkness. A single bat can eat 3000 midges in a single night so good news for us too.

The team here at Loch of the Lowes continue to monitor the osprey nest 24/7 to ensure security & record all behaviour for future comparison
I have been really fortunate this season to be on duty to see so many milestones – the return of first osprey in last week of March (in a blizzard), the return of our amazing female & of course the arrival of her fourth egg. Ospreys in particular never cease to amaze me how ever often I see them & so with holiday season approaching I hope you will come to visit us – you will not be disappointed.

Blue YZ has fledged- that is, she has  taken her maiden flight from the nest this morning.

She took off a few minutes ago (10:08), heading towards her mother who was sitting waiting on the ‘Boingy branch’ to the east of the nest. She flew strongly and confidently which is great. She is now sitting somewhere in the lochside trees, watched by her mother who is still on the same branch, looking unpreturbed.

Blue YZ should make it back to the nest safely within a few hours- unless she copies her brother Blue 44 last year!

More news as it happens.

Just short flights from the nest today by our osprey chick- she is really getting the hang of landing a bit better too!

Blue YZ is also making strides in her skills in dealing with food, even when it’s alive: the male arrived back at the nest this afternoon with a small pike, whilst the adult female was absent. The pike was flapping and writhing around the nest and our youngster was able to stand on it and subdue it before feeding itself- all skills she will soon need to be fully independent. If the adult female is around when a fish arrives, you will still see her ‘babying’ the chick though and feeding it small morsels- old habitats die hard.

There has been a change in the birds around the loch recently as more and more birds begin to turn up having finished their breeding for the season. Families of ducks and geese with ‘teenage’ young in tow, and non breeding birds (those that have not been able to nest or lost young) are now starting to congregate in their ‘off season’ territories like Loch of the Lowes. We have seen more Tufted Duck on the loch and on Tuesday evening a Diver- unfortunately it was so far out we couldn’t tell if it was a Gret Northern or Red or Black-throated species. These wonderful birds breed on high mountain lochs in Scotland. Here is a picture of one seen in a previous year on the reserve.

The drive to the Loch of the Lowes reserve this morning felt like an opening scene from King Kong – mist swirled along the lanes & the cloud base engulfed the approach to the Loch! The warm sunshine soon cleared the view to the nest & what a day we have had since!

There have been three different intruding male ospreys, all extremely intent on taking a look at the osprey nest with one almost landing. Alarm calls have been frequent with the chick responding by lying very flat in the nest. Our female has stayed close to the nest all day & our male has positioned himself on his usual vantage points to keep an eye out for the cheeky intruders & protect the nest as required. There have been a number of spectacular aerial chases across the loch with our male only returning once the intruders have flown away. There was a fish brought to the nest by our male just before 6.00 this morning & an attempt at a fish in front of the hides just before 9.00.

Our female chick is continuing to make short flights around the loch & is improving her landing skills. Visitors were treated at one point to a sighting of 4 ospreys flying above the nest.

Other sightings around the loch have been a red throated diver, regular visits from fallow deer & 3 woodpeckers all together on the dead tree in front of the osprey nest.

Osprey Diary 7th August: Fond Farewell For Now
Posted on August 7, 2013 by rangeremma

Well, it looks like our beloved female osprey has left for the long journey southwards on her autumn migration. She has not been seen on the nest or around the loch since mid yesterday and we are now fairly certain she has left for the year. When the wind dropped and backed around to a north easterly yesterday afternoon, she will have sensed a tail wind suitable to aid her journey southwards.

It seems like only a couple of weeks ago we were welcoming her back in spring, with the whole breeding season ahead of her. She arrived in fine form back on March 30th, to a great welcome for her 23rd year at this nest. She then kept us all waiting an extra week or so for egg laying, then surprised us with a truly remarkable four eggs. She displayed her usual tender and expert parental care and has raised this years chick Blue YZ to fledging as a healthy and very confident young bird who we hope will have every advantage for the journey ahead.

So far in her breeding ‘career’ this remarkable bird has laid 66 eggs and raised 50 chicks to fledging at this nest. She has taught us all so much about osprey behaviour and has surprised us more than a few times, not least when she became so very ill in 2010 and managed to pull through when all the experts had told us to expect the worst.

At her advanced age ( her late 20′s) we are all aware that every year she makes the migration back to Perthshire successfully may be her last. She is already so far  past ‘normal’ life expectancy and there are so many hazards and so much luck involved in migration, we know the odds are now against her realistically .   So we all fervently hope but don’t dare count on her returning next year to set yet another record for UK ospreys.

We all wish her  and all the birds migrating from UK to southern wintering grounds luck, fair winds and safe journeys.

Ranger Emma

Osprey Diary Thurs 29th August
Posted on August 29, 2013 by rangeremma
Not a lot of action on the osprey nest today – in fact we spent most of the morning watching the flies on a rather unsavoury left over fish tail in the nest! This in itself is a good sign though- it means neither of our two remaining ospreys are going hungry, or they’d have been back for it, flies not withstanding. The adult male did bring a fish in for our chick Blue YZ this afternoon so we know she isn’t too  hungry.

Q: Why do ospreys sometimes eat the fish tails and sometimes not?

A: It depends on how hungry they are, and the type of fish ( some  have larger stiffer tails). I have found a pile of fish tails below an ospreys favourite feeding perch before, and at Loch of the Lowes, most nights a fox wanders past the base of the  nest tree looking for any dropped tidbits.

Q: Do ospreys produce pellets like owls?

A: Great question! All raptors ( birds of prey) and many other predatory or scavenger birds ( like large gulls and Skuas) all produce pellets. These are regurgitated  inedible remains of their prey, such  as fur, hair, bones and beaks. As ospreys only eat fish, and fish scales are digestible and their  bones are cartilaginous ( rubbery) and easy to digest, they do not need to produce pellets.

Q: How long does an osprey take to kill a fish and how is it done?

A: This depends on the birds catching technique. Sometimes, if the bird gets a good hold on the fish in the water , it can pierce the fish’s brain or vital organs with its talons and it dies almost instantly. If not, it often quickly suffocates when it is taken from the water, as the bird carries it away. Occasionally if the bird returns to a nearby nest quickly, the fish will still be alive, and we have all seen this on the Lowes nest. In this case, the osprey invariably start eating the head first so this quickly kills the fish.

And the BIG question of the week…..

Q: How much longer will the ospreys be at Loch of the Lowes this year?

A: We don;t know exactly as every year their leaving date is a little different. Most often they leave around the end of August, or the first week of September, We have had juveniles still here into the second or even third week of September but this is less common. It can be influenced hugely by weather- a good northerly breeze and high  pressure are ideal for southwards migrations so check your weather forecast!

My advice is that if you wish to see the ospreys this season, come and visit Loch of the Lowes this weekend and wish them safe journeys!

Yes Blue YZ is still in Spain, the latest data shows she’s been moving between the same three sites, Embalse (reservoir) de Piedras, the unnamed loch nearby and Represa (dam) del Almendro. So now it’s a waiting game, is she having a stopover like her brother Blue 44 did in France or is she preparing herself to move onto Africa or has she found her winter roost we’ll just have to wait and see. The latest satellite tracking data will be up on the site in an hour or so.

Satellite Tracking Udpate: Still Going Strong
Posted on October 11, 2013 by rangeremma

Blue YZ is still going strong on her perilous migration. As of yesterday she was in northern Mali, and was finally starting to make a turn south west towards the coast.

Oct. 12th
As promised, updates on news of our young satellite tracked osprey as soon as we have them. We too are on the edges of our seats waiting for each new set of data to see how our youngster is fairing.

As of 9pm last night ( Friday) she was in central Mauritania,  still following her SW or SSW trajectory. She is still flying well, at a fairly normal speed, and making good long flights.

So far, so good!

It's amazing to think of Osprey flying over the Sahara.

Our two young birds in Africa continue to do well and are sending us fascinating information regularly. Their  transmitter tags are programmed to collect location information every hour , where available, and then transmit that info  to the satellite at set intervals: during peak migration, every 2 days, but as of next week, every four days. So don’t worry if you haven’t heard any news of Blue YZ and Blue YD for a few days- we will continue to give you the latest news as soon as we have it.

It's times like these when I am grateful that our Rochester-born birds don't have transmitters, except for poor Quest and the one she is stuck with.  I prefer to think they have all gone blissfully along their merry way in life and have not come to any harm.  RIP young Blue YZ.   :(
