A word of caution about Camera 1 streaming video.

It does not work well at night. At about 9 PM it will start flashing like a strobe light. We haven't figured out why yet, but we decided to go live anyway rather than missing the opportunity to have video of the eyases venturing onto the platform.

If the flashing bothers you, pause the 2nd video stream until morning. Do not report it to the Camera Problems board. We already know about it and are working on a solution.

I think the gals are going disco on us happy

1854  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcons News / Re: Falcon Fledge Watchers Meeting Announcement - Saturday, June 19th on: 16-Jun-10, 11:14:05 AM
So Sorry for the late notice.  June sent a notice out to the Falcon Watchers about the upcoming Fledge Watch meeting.  But I'm sure that there are some of you who have never Fledge Watched before that would just love to join us.

It's so hard to believe that Callidora and Jemison will be taking those all important first flights within the next couple weeks.  It seems like yesterday that they were just tiny little white fluffs breaking out of their eggs.  Now look at them!  White fluff is being replaced by brown juvenile feathers.  happy

The Fledge Watch meeting is scheduled for this coming Saturday:

Saturday
June 19, 2010
9:00 am
Rundel Library

Many of us will be there at 8:00 am or earlier.

So, if you've ever thought about joining the Fledge Watch, this is your chance.  Please consider meeting us on Saturday morning to find out what you can do to help out.

Thanks!
Carol P.

Carol,

Do we know where in the library?  (Or which side)?
1855  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Offspring / Re: Seneca Sighted at Brookpark Road Bridge with a Mate! on: 16-Jun-10, 08:07:45 AM
Our little Warrior princess is growing with leaps and bounds.  I stopped briefly yesterday AM on my drive into work, and she is already starting to flap a lot.  Seneca and Cheyenne were both on the bridge railing below the nest, about 8 feet from where we drive into work.  I plan on sharing much more about this little one, and for many years to come about Seneca.

Elimac-- Welcome and thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kris and Sage - Thanks for the updates.  I merged the two topics under this thread.  Kris, how do you see the Buffalo stations in Rochester?

I feel terrible about the Statler fledgling.  With so many nestsites around Buffalo this year, Buffalo watchers are limited.

I hope this little one will be okay.  I figured the fledgling couldn't be returned to the top of the Statler because DEC does not have permission to access that building.  Once the falcon gets a clean bill of health, it will probably get released nearby.

Sage - please keep us updated.

I agree - some strange happenings.  I sure hope the area residents don't get so upset with BB that they force the UB nestbox to be removed.  I have to admit this is one very aggressive peregrine falcon, but she didn't do this last year.  Could young Yankee not be the protector that Smoky was last year?  With the publicity and cam this year, could people be getting too close and upsetting her territory?  Whatever happened, BB feels very threatened and she is going to continue until her fledges are on their own.  Wonder what kind of a dog it was?

Joyce

Joyce-We live between both cities so we can get both Rochester and Buffalo stations on TWC.

I'm so happy that this man realized this young Peregrine needed help, stopped and with others, guided it off the road.  It could have been struck, severely injured or even killed by traffic. A very lucky young fledgling!  clap

At least they didn't do what the motorist with the newly fledged falcon did-- drove off with it on the windshield.

And I agree with you, Suzanne.  It made me nervous seeing that man so upset.  I don't believe the falcon tried to lift his dog but I can see where a mama bird would want to protect her babies.

Nicole,

I'm not sure.  I have seen the quote from Anatole France several times and loved it but I have no idea where it is from!

Love the quote about dogs and cats!  Seems to fit!!!

National Zoo is currently in negotiations with China to extend Mei and Tian's stay for another 5 years - that was always the plan.  I know SDZ negotiated Bai and Gao's stay for another 5 years as did recently ZA - they both got the pandas for half the cost this time so I expect NZ will get to keep Mei and Tian for a few more years yet!

Read that in the Washington Post awhile back in an interview with the new Director for NZ who happens to be the old ZA Director so he has experience renegotiating Panda Loan agreements.

ps: Yes I am also a pandaholic : angel

Thanks Carly!  I am a pandaholic too!!!!  I want to volunteer at Bifengxia some day!

Me too...both pandaholic AND wanting to volunteer at Bifengxia!  I went to the National Zoo once when Tai Shan was almost a year old and did nothing but sit and watch them...I knew I'd never have another chance to see Tai.   panda

Same here!  I saw him when he was a year old.  I was so sad when he left.  Such a sweetie!  He's doing great in Bifengxia.  Mei Lan, from Zoo Atlanta had a harder time adjusting, poor sweetheart.  She was growling at people and wouldn't eat.  She is doing better now. She is at Chengdu.
