This news is a week old but I missed telling it while I was away in Florida.

Peregrine falcons are jousting for territory now that nesting season is only a month away.  On February 10 Rochester, New York falcon watchers reported that Beauty, the queen of the Times Square nest, was found injured on the ground near the Xerox Tower.  She’d been in a fight.

Beauty was taken to a rehabber and is undergoing treatment.  By now her wing no longer droops and the vet has confirmed that the vision in her injured eye is OK.  She just needs time to heal.

Meanwhile, Rochester falcon watchers are trying to determine who won the site from Beauty.  The new female is banded black-over-red with the same red “Hâ€� as Unity, a female who attempted to nest four miles away at Kodak Park.

If the new female is Unity, it would be a twist in the saga of Dorothy’s offspring.  Beauty is Dorothy’s daughter, hatched at the Cathedral of Learning in 2007.  Unity is Dorothy’s grand-daughter from Toledo, Ohio, making her Beauty’s niece.  Both of them mated last spring with Archer, Rochester’s resident male peregrine, but neither nest was successful.

Eventually someone will identify the new female peregrine at the Times Square Building.  Only then will we learn if this is another chapter in Peyton Place for Dorothy’s girls.

You got that right.  Beauty belongs on Mercury!  That starts the day off right!

When Dave Nelson from the Mahoning County Dog Warden’s office on Wednesday came across William Bednar, 55 and homeless, pushing a cart filled with dead animals and two syringes, he was running into a familiar face.

Police arrested Bednar for the syringes and the dog warden’s office confiscated a dead peregrine falcon from the cart.  

The next day, police filed charges against Bednar for the killing of two German shepherd puppies Jan. 30 in the West Federal Street boulevard in front of the Western Reserve Transit Authority station.

Police charged Bednar with two felony counts of cruelty to companion animals. He has two prior convictions of animal cruelty, one in 2000 and one earlier this year.

City Prosecutor Jay Macejko said Bednar was a person of interest almost immediately after the investigation started because he has a history of animal abuse, and security cameras filmed him in the area about the time of the dog killings.

Mahoning County Dog Warden Matt Ditchey said the shoe laces that were tied around the dogs’ necks and the blanket that covered them also linked the killings to Bednar, but he would not say how.

Wednesday night while he was in custody, the dog warden’s office obtained a witness statement regarding the German shepherd puppies, leading to the animal cruelty charges, Macejko said.

Bednar will be arraigned 1:30 today at Youngstown Municipal Court and may have more charges filed against him if further investigation shows the falcon was killed, Nelson said.

Lady Gaga returns to Windsor

The peregrine falcon with the pop star name has been stuffed and is now on display at the Ojibway Nature Centre. Windsor’s Lady Gaga captured headlines in a heartbreaking drama last year when volunteers rescued the fledgling three times under the Ambassador Bridge and local vets performed a tricky surgery on her broken leg only to find out wing fractures meant she had to be euthanized.

So sad!

I saw lightening and heard thunder seconds after in this mini blizzard we're having! It was supposed to be sunny and nice today. I never saw the sun!!! 

I was driving home from the vet's which is about 10 minutes away from home, 15 if there is traffic.  It was sprinkling but it looked very dark as I looked ahead.  Then it started snowing-- blowing and very misty.  The weatherman said there was thunder and lightning too!

And we're getting 51 degrees! WORSE Winter EVER!!
