UPPER WEST SIDE — This hawk is a cougar.
Riverside Park's  widowed red-tailed hawk, who broke Upper West Sider's hearts as she raised her babies alone after her mate was killed last year, has found new love — with a younger male.

A Cougar-Hawk?? I like it!!

Me too!

Arkansas

PORT ARANSAS - The Animal Rehabilitation Keep rescues hundreds of birds every year and today was no different when they were called to Flour Bluff to track down a Sandhill Crane with an injured leg.

A resident called after seeing the crane near Caribbean Drive and within the hour Tony Amos was on the scene. It didn't take Tony long to track the crippled crane down and catch him in a net.

Once captured the injured bird was taken to Dr. Tim Tristan at the Oso Veterinary Hospital.

Dr. Tristan and his staff gave the bird some antibiotics to treat an open wound that almost severed a foot. They think the crane became entangled in some fishing line.

Unfortunately, the foot could not be saved. In order to walk through wetlands to find food it would need both feet, so Dr. Tristan and Tony Amos contacted everyone they knew that may be able to take care of a one footed crane in captivity.

No home was found so the bird had to be euthanized.

   Sad

Friends of ours who had a farm once used one of these banger devices that "scared" away the crows and pigeons. This it did successfully for a short time... until - get this! - the birds got to know how often the thing would go "Bang", and they would all rise up about 10 seconds before the bang went off... only to settle right back in again!

Can't out-smart a crow!!

There goes the crows

Well, if they were leaving their regular roost at 7:11AM I guess the scare the crows away campaign didn't do much good.  stupid mini-bird

They probably came right back but I'm sure it will resume again tonight and for the next few nights.

And my bet? Things will settle and those crows will be right back where they came from. With hard-earned tax money straight down the gurgler. Never mind that no one seems to be saying how this will/could affect other wildlife.

Obviously, was not a thought out plan, just attack the crows. Crows are smart, they are probably laughing right now saying, "what a waste of $$, we ain't going anywhere!"

Wow and they are not endangered! Never hear much on the Merlins, thought they may be scarce. Guess not. Thanks BF, good info, as always!   bow

Kelly said:  Donna - you may use any photo I put on FB. They said they were using different noise makers, fire crackers, laser lights, etc. I felt bad for the crows really - they were looking a bit confused. : (

Did anyone near downtown hear or see anything last night? I recorded the video from our cameras and played back part of it this morning, but I didn't see anything obvious except for maybe a few booms after 11 PM. It could have been wind noise though.

Kelly Corbett posted a pic on fb sometime after 10 of them scaring the crows. I asked if I could share her pic...waiting.
