I read some where that a falcon has taken over the Kestrel box. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

Dennis Patrick Reports:

Hi there everyone
Since Dec 21, 2011 I’ve tried to log in several times and finally can sign in. Really not too much to report, Freddie and Voltaire are still hanging around the nest site then flying away and coming back and doing a lot of preening. Hey, they’re courting so why should’t they be preening. Dennis and I are looking forward to seeing them with their new babies again this year. If you would like to be a volunteer please let us know.

One of them there now! Not sure on the nest situation. Time will tell if they have to remove it.

Audubon Society called me today to report they received a call about a possibly injured hawk. I was at work so couldnt go myself so called the contact number and spoke with the secretary from P.S. 96 in the Bronx where the hawk was sitting under some bushes for quite a while she explained. It was getting close to the end of the school day and some 1100 students would be exiting the front door only feet away from the bird and she was concerned for the kids as well as the bird that if it got spooked may end up in a more dangerous position. I called our good fiend Mike Pastore from NYC Animal Care and Control who luckily had a person nearby and was able to dispatch him quickly to the scene. The CACC driver called me when he arrived asking what to do next, He was willing to try but had just 3 months as a worker for the city and never handled a bird like this before. he explained when he approached the bird it managed to get into the 15 foott all bush in front of the school and his net wouldn''t reach. i asked him to use his head and wed together come up with a solution since he confirmed it was not right and struggled to fly but jumped branch to branch to get where itr was no just out of reach.i asked him could he drive his van onto the sidewalk to get close enough but that wasnt a possibilty. Then we talked about any long pipe type thing to nudge the bird to a point he could grab it. Well he asked a custodian there and he was lent a long medal pole used to pull open the old style windows in the school . He was able to pry the gently off the branch and then catch it in the net . when he called with the news I was as excited for him as he was and as I praised him for the great work he trhanked me saying it meant a lot to hear. So this male juvenile redtailed hawk is here tonight . Nothing fractureds but sweeling on 1 wrist not permitting him to catch prey so hopefully thats the extent of the injuries and rest, steriod, and pain meds will do the trick. he ate readily as you can see and we just wanted to make sure he had food and fluids tonight and tomorrow well offer him food to eat on his own.

10991  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Endangered Whooping Crane Dies In Indiana on: 03-Feb-12, 07:31:10 AM
An injured whooping crane that was rescued Monday from the Cayuga Duke Energy Power Plant in Vermillion County has died.

State conservation officers retrieved the injured crane, which had a severe break in one of its legs. It was transported to the Indianapolis Zoo. However, it was unable to recover from its injury.

The injury was determined to that of natural causes. Whooping cranes are protected by the endangered species act. The DNR says the legal protections have helped the crane population recover from a few dozen in the 1940s to approximately 500 in the wild today, but its status remains fragile.

Whooping Crane Migration Will Finish By Truck: Whoopers uncooperative

An effort using ultralight planes to coax essentially orphaned whooping cranes all the way from Wisconsin to their wintering grounds in Florida has ended for the season. The problem this time isn’t a possible violation of Federal Aviation Administration rules, but rather the birds themselves.

“The birds haven’t been cooperative,’’ said Liz Conde, a spokeswoman for Operation Migration, the group that organizes the flights. “The birds are refusing to follow the ultralights any further.’’ The last time an Operation Migration pilot flying an ultralight tried to guide them a few days ago, on a morning with perfect weather for flying, “the birds would just come out of the pen, fall in behind the ultralight, take off in beautiful formation, fly for a short bit and then break away.’’

“It’s a game of ‘Can’t catch me!’ or something,” she mused.

The decision is something of a disappointment after an epic struggle to get the F.A.A. to allow the migration to resume. Acting on a complaint that the flights were commercial, and that the ultralights and their pilots are not certified for commercial use, the agency grounded the flights after the birds and pilots reached Alabama. It relented after a chorus of experts said that it was important to re-establish a wild population of endangered migrating birds, that this was the best way to do it, and that time was of the essence.

It may already have been too late. The weather has been unusually balmy for this time of year, around 61 degrees today, Ms. Conde noted, and the increasing hours of daylight are a cue to the birds that winter is already waning. The birds may also have been undergoing some hormonal changes, she said.

In any case, the only way to get the cranes moving will be to put them in crates and drive them by truck to the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge near Decatur, Ala., she said, where six or seven whooping cranes, alumni of earlier migrations, are already wintering.

Operation Migration has never led birds to Wheeler, only to Florida, she said; the wild cranes that are there now picked the spot on their own. But that’s O.K., Ms. Conde said: “You never want to second-guess a wild bird.”

Wheeler is about 45 miles northeast, as the crow flies, from the cranes current position.

The cranes that are being trucked might return year after year to Wheeler or they might go elsewhere; no one is really sure. If they remain impressionable and fly with a group of other whooping cranes, they might make it to Florida next year, Ms. Conde said; or they might pair off with mates and fly to Florida.

The group is posting progress reports on its blog.  http://www.operationmigration.org/Field_Journal.html?utm_source=EB+Feb+2.12+Wheeler&utm_campaign=EBFeb+2.12+Wheeler&utm_medium=email

Just checked CMNH and C&C have posted an update to GG and Titan and Cheyenne!!

Checked here Wednesday morning and GG was at the bridge with Titan. They weren't perched close together and appeared to be in an early stage of bonding. GG flew up near the nest ledge as Titan was perched inside the bridge above the nest-- she appeared unfamiliar with the bridge, as she tried and missed some unusual landing spots inside the bridge, and then she flew up and perched on a beam in the I-90 Bridge that runs parallel to the Hilliard Road Bridge. Titan vocalized, and flew to a couple different perches while GG stayed put. He then flew out over the valley, repeatedly sounding the alarm call and appearing to be driving out an intruding raptor below the treeline. He flew back up to the light post several times and repeated his defensive jaunts, and then stayed out. Wasn't able to stay to see if he tried bringing in food for GG, but will be there on our next off days. Meanwhile, no sightings of McKees while here.

To thicken the plot, Laura Jordan plans to release Cheyenne very soon, so it could be interesting if he returns to the area. BTW, this was the first place we were able to ID Cheyenne as a subadult male before he was driven out by Titan and moved on to nest with Seneca at the Brookpark site.
