This juvenile eagle came in to our friends at Indiana Raptor Center in Nashville. It will need the leg amputated, and will never be able to be released. Amputation of a leg is not really a solution in raptors because they must place too much pressure on the remaining foot, and the foot develops pressure sores and infection. If a prosthesis if possible, and it can stand without creating foot issues there is a very remote possibility that it could be used as an education bird. It would certainly be an effective illustration of how a moment's thoughtlessness with a gun can destroy the life of such a beautiful animal. Dr. Clarke is consulting the experts at the University of Minnesota to see if this is even possible. If not he must be euthanized. What a senseless act!

This is the result of someones malice - this used to be the leg of a bald eagle, but as you can see a large portion is missing with bone fragments protruding from it. Let's hope we can catch this person and they actually receive the actual federal fine for their crime.

Here's a redtail hawk adult we got yesterday who is truly thankful to be here. When we received him he was badly dehydrated and emaciated, and could not stand up. After getting fluids and slowly putting him back on food, he just grabbed a dead mouse out of my hand and is looking WAY better. Other than an abrasion on his wrist, there is nothing obviously wrong. Now that he's perked up, later today he'll get a thorough exam, blood work and xrays, if indicated. Our thanks to the finders who brought him all the way to us from Hanover, IN!

11000  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Pigeon fanciers' homes raided in peregrine falcon poison probe UK on: 02-Feb-12, 09:17:33 PM
Four pigeon fanciers' homes were raided today by police probing the poisoning of rare peregrine falcons.

Racers and keepers are believed to be targeting the birds of prey because they are killing the smaller birds, the RSPB said.

Police officers from Avon and Somerset, South Wales, Northumbria and West Midlands police forces raided the homes of four pigeon keepers in a coordinated operation today. A 47-year-old man was arrested in Northumbria, the bird protection charity added.

Peregrine falcons swoop on racing pigeons as they are returning to their lofts. There are now around 3,000 peregrine falcons in the UK, depending on the time of year, the charity said.

Mark Thomas, an RSPB investigations officer, said: "The peregrine falcon is one of the UK's most heavily persecuted birds of prey, and we hope that today's operation will help further our investigations."

From this am

Norfolk Botanical Garden is extremely fortunate and proud to be the nesting grounds for wild eagles. The eagles have advanced our mission and taught millions the importance of environmental education while developing a loyal and caring worldwide audience of eagle watchers. This would not have been possible without the strong partnership with WVEC, VDGIF, and with special assistance from the CCB and our caring viewers.

Without a doubt, everyone loves the NBG eagles and cares deeply about their safety and well-being. As you are aware, there are current discussions among several agencies regarding the nest at NBG. Concern has been expressed by these agencies about the proximity of the nesting eagles to the Norfolk International Airport and the danger that it could present to the flying public.

Norfolk Botanical Garden is neither legally nor professionally in a position to take any action that would affect the bald eagles that are nesting at the Garden. We are an educational and horticultural institution that displays beautiful landscapes, maintains plant collections and provides environmental information.

If and when there is any action to be taken in regard to eagles at the Garden or in the region, it will be added to the Airport’s existing Wildlife Hazard Management Plan. This plan has been in place for a number of years, as it is at all airports, and addresses animals that present a hazard to airline safety. These plans are created by wildlife experts and enforced by the appropriate government agencies.

We recognize that the viewing public is strongly invested in these eagles and understand and share in your frustration with the unknown. But it is just that, unknown.

As the eagle component of the Wildlife Hazard Management Plan is developed, NBG will provide further information as soon it becomes available.

As I am sure you will agree, public safety and the safety of the eagles is paramount. It is the responsibility of the professionals and experts involved, or others they may deem appropriate, to develop a plan that effectively addresses and provides sound solutions to this situation.

COURT HOUSE – With the days getting longer and spring drawing nearer, many New Jersey residents may be thinking it's time to call it a winter and stop filling their birdfeeder.

“Don’t do it!” emphasized Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications officer for New Jersey Audubon. “Late winter is precisely the time that winter bird populations face their greatest food challenge,” he explained.
