WILDLIFE WATCHING — The diminutive pygmy owl stands less than 7 inches tall, and it's easy to miss.
Birder Teri Pieper of Twisp used her eagle eyes to spot this little guy as she skinny-skied behind friends who had swooshed past the owl in the brush just above their heads without seeing it. She was skiing near Sun Mountain Lodge on the Methow Valley Sport Trails Association trails.
The pygmy owl is an aggressive little bird that preys on rodents and other birds as large as a mourning dove.

Sad news to share - An adult pefa found on roof of school in East Aurora Monday, may have hit heating equipment.
Tag # Black - M Red-T
Tag # 168701185
information gathered when it was reported to the national hotline was that
it was from NY state and banded on June 6th 2005
Appears to indicate Rochester but color and numbers don't jive
That is Sabrina's Band #!!

Wasn't Sabrina born in 2006? Yes, he was. Hoping it wasn't him!! This was a 2005 falcon, so it can't be Sabrina/Valiant. Wonder what falcon has the same numbers! |

Crows and falcons already coexist in city
The writer of Saturday's letter suggesting the use of falcons to rid Rochester of its crows seems to be unaware of two points. First, the crows gather in Rochester as darkness falls and leave early in the morning, whereas falcons hunt during daylight hours. Second, we already have falcon presence in Rochester. At least one peregrine falcon, Beauty, is seen downtown on a daily basis, often pausing on or around the Mercury statue a couple of blocks from where the crows gather. Her appearances are reported on Facebook (Rfalconcam) and at rfalconcam.com.

She is and I did! Met her through the Cleveland Forum, she is from Boston! I put her up a message on there, here and facebook! Bet she shows up sometime today! LOL!  Yay, a Boston gal... GO SOX!!! Hope she stops by!! |
