Some birders not too wise in attempts to view owl
The arrival of the great grey owl has attracted attention from birdwatchers across Canada and the United States — unfortunately it has also resulted in several complaints to the OPP.
Essex County OPP media officer Rick Tonial said some of the bird watchers are creating unsafe conditions in their attempts to view the owl.
He said they have received complaints of birders parking their vehicles unsafely and in unlawful locations.
Tonial said some of the nature lovers wanting to take pictures of the owl are also putting themselves and their equipment at risk.
"A great grey owl has been residing in Essex County since before Christmas and has provided birders with the opportunity to see and photograph this beautiful bird up close," said a statement from the Ministry of Natural Resources. "This species is not considered rare in Ontario, but it is rare to see one in southwestern Ontario.
The ministry also warns that people should stay 30-40 metres away from this bird and other raptors to help reduce potential stress on the bird and to avoid human-wildlife conflict.
The great grey owl is protected under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act.

His drawings often represent his current obsessions. In the attachment I send you, it's not hard to guess what's keeping him busy right now. There are almost 400 birds on it and he knows the names and Latin names of most of them. David Barth, Vogels ("Birds" in Dutch), 2008 (at age 10) (Did you find the falcons) I find this amazing!!! OK, who can name all these birds??

Update: Resident male is back!!
1/19/2012 :: Breaking News on the Resident Male! The resident male, band code W/V, has reclaimed his territory! He was spotted at the ledge this afternoon in the company of the adult female. No sightings today of the unbanded male. It remains to be determined whether or not there was a territorial battle between the males or if this just sets the stage for a battle. Males at this nest site have had the habit of leaving the area for a week or two and then returning. Breeding activity typically takes place at this time of year so if the battle has not happened, it will likely happen soon. Any information that falcon watchers can provide about the behavior of these birds is of great value to DEP education staff monitoring the site. Information can be reported to the falcon email account by clicking on the Contact DEP link below the web image window on the DEP falcon page.
