South Western PA! Wildlife webcam 4 is currently streaming from an owl box setup in a remote location to attract eastern screech owls. Our owl project consists of 5 screech owl boxes all wired with small IR camera. We have recently been seeing a red phased eastern screech owl roosting during the day in owl box #2 which we have named "Hunter". The other owl boxes have been used for food caching. The screech owls sometimes kill small rodents like mice or shrews and will store this food in a box for a 24-hour period where it will return to eat it.

Our plan is to attract a mating pair and broadcast all of this live over the Internet for educational purposes. We will switch the live feeds around to which ever box is more active on a given day.

Well Jeff had a bit of a scare. He had his annual check-up and the X-ray showed a dark spot around his heart, flew him to Christchurch NZ for a CAT. Nothing showed, he's back in Antarctica and it's business as usual. Here's his pics for today.

Thousands of Birds Crash Land in Wal-Mart Parking Lot

Thousands of migratory birds were killed or injured after apparently mistaking a Wal-Mart parking lot, football fields and other snow-covered areas of southern Utah for bodies of water and plummeting to the ground in what one state wildlife expert called the worst mass bird crash she'd ever seen.

Crews went to work cleaning up the dead birds and rescuing the injured survivors after the creatures crash-landed in the St. George area Monday night.

By midday Wednesday, volunteers had helped rescue more than 3,000 birds, releasing them into a nearby pond. There's no count on how many died, although officials estimate it's upwards of 1,500.

"They're just everywhere," said Teresa Griffin, wildlife program manager for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resource's southern region. "It's been nonstop. All our employees are driving around picking them up, and we've got so many people coming to our office and dropping them off."

No human injuries or property damage have been reported.

Officials say stormy conditions probably confused the flock of eared grebes, a duck-like aquatic bird likely making its way to the Mexican coast for the winter.

The birds plunged into a Cedar City Wal-Mart parking lot, football fields, highways and over miles of property that had been blanketed by about 3 inches of gleaming snow.  The rescue effort that started Tuesday afternoon included residents collecting grebes -- which weigh about a pound -- and delivering them in cardboard boxes to the wildlife department's office.

Officers said once they dropped the birds into bodies of water in southern Utah's Washington County, including a pond near Hurricane, the water-loving creatures were "very active."

Many of the birds had broken wings or other injuries from the accident. Wildlife agency spokesman Lynn Chamberlain said the birds' hollow bones can heal, although humans can't do much to help the process.

Keeping them in water -- where they have food and won't have to fly -- improves their chances.

"We're giving them the best shot they can," Chamberlain said. "The likelihood is that most of them will survive."

Norfolk Botanical Garden, WVEC prep for eagle season

NORFOLK  – The folks at Norfolk Botanical Garden are preparing for the 2011-2012 eagle season.

On Thursday, barriers in the garden protecting the area around the eagle nest were installed.
The barriers are the same as last season and will restrict the pathway through the Renaissance Court and the Matson Garden area roads.

In November, three new state-of-the-art cameras were installed near the nest thanks to a donation from David McDonald. Two cameras focus on the nest while the third camera provides images of the beautiful surrounding area, including various perches used by the eagles when they are not on the nest.

“Norfolk Botanical Garden is pleased once again to be able to help provide the informative and educational video of this fascinating nature activity,” commented Don Buma, executive director for Norfolk Botanical Garden. “As visitors from around world view this pair of eagles, it is our hope that each person acquires a greater appreciation of plants and animals and the environment in which they live.”

The plans are to begin broadcasting 24/7 with sound, sometime in the beginning of January.
This one-of-a-kind experience is made possible through a partnership with Virginia Department of Game Inland Fisheries, WVEC, and Norfolk Botanical Garden.

The Eagle Cam provides a unique and close-up view of the daily lives of a wild pair of Bald Eagles.  The pair being a male that has nested at the Norfolk Botanical Garden for eight years and his new female mate.

You may recall the male eagle’s former mate was killed last spring after being struck by an airplane.  Their eaglets were moved to the Wildlife Center of Virginia in Waynesboro.

You will be able to access the Eagle Cam right here on WVEC.com.  We will host the video feed and post slideshows of activity at the nest.
