I think what people are trying to say is that there was no Calendar at all for AB C and J back in 2010. There really is no merchandise for them at all. They are the Rochester falcons now. Keep in mind, I love the "Kodak" falcons as much as you all do but we do have new Falcons in town now. 3 of them and an occasional Mr T!

December 9 update

NX was anesthetized this morning for another series of radiographs.  Dr. Miranda and Dr. Dave closely examined NX’s left coracoid and were able to definitively confirm a fracture today.  Not only is her coracoid fractured, but it has “avulsed” – meaning that the fractured portion of bone has actually been pulled away by the tension of a ligament or a tendon.

Dr. Miranda replaced the body wrap on NX, which is securely holding her left wing against her body.  The wrap will remain on for the next two weeks.  Another set of radiographs will be taken during the week of December 19.  The veterinary team hope to see evidence of healing by that point – the fractured area may form a callous, or her body may actually absorb the chunk of bone that has pulled away from the fracture.

NX’s right eye injury is unchanged at this point, though her lacerations are healing nicely.  The carpal wound on her right “wrist” is still swollen, but continues to slowly heal.  Dr. Miranda noted that NX’s GI tract looked “much happier” on radiographs today, indicating that no scoping would be needed at this time.

Whereas Rochester, NY would probably hire a Minnesota company.

For those concerned about problems with our falcons, this story is about Rochester, MN.

So it is..I saw the NY on the preview page. It's a NY company hired to do the job!  Embarrassed   in Rochester, MN. Going to take a cold shower now!

Winter Behaviour
December 08, 2011 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre
Kathy Reports:

It’s been a ghost town here the past 2 weeks.  Angel was around and visible quite a bit early last week during the warmer than usual weather.  She could be seen sunning herself on her favorite perch most mornings.

Since the colder weather has arrived this week there has been no sightings of her .  I havent’ spotted Jack for almost 2 weeks now either.  Even the pigeons are in hiding!

This is not unusual at this type of year.  No doubt they have taken shelter out of the wind and cold and likely also have to travel further out to find a meal.   Sun is finally in the forecast for later today so I’ll keep my eyes peeled and hope she makes an appearence on her favorite perch.

!!! Like Clockwork!

Haha..I swear this pair reads our CPF blogs.   The sun is coming up and shining brightly and sure enough both Angel and Jack just showed up on the nest ledge!

Jack is by the nest box and Angel is on her perch sunning herself.  They both have full crops and there are feathers all over the ground so likely they were on the roof having breakfast!  Great to see them both again, it just makes my day when I see for myself that they are safe and healthy  Smiley

A popular “gay” penguin couple in China has been given a newly hatched chick to care for. The male penguins were given the hatchling because a female penguin was struggling after giving birth to twins, which is rare for penguins, according to the U.K.’s Metro.

“It’s a big job creating a baby penguin. It’s definitely a two-penguin job,” Kevin McGowan of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology in Ithaca, N.Y., told ABCNews.com.

McGowan said that newborn penguins require a great deal of attention and effort to protect. In the rare event of a penguin giving birth to twins, one of the hatchlings can be in danger.

“In birds, it doesn’t matter what sex you are. Both sexes are perfectly capable and absolutely necessary to raise a penguin bird,” McGowan said. “It’s not like mammals where only one sex can feed.”

The penguins were born at Harbin Polar Land in northern China at the end of November. The “gay” penguin couple has been known to try to steal eggs during hatching seasons, according to Metro.

“The [heterosexual] pairs do a display of bringing a pebble, passing it back and forth. The interaction gets the birds going and synchronized for breeding season,” McGowan said. “If [the 'gay' penguins] are doing the same kind of thing, they could be passing the pebble and ready to roll.”

McGowan said that the hatchling will likely not suffer from being separated from its biological parents and could eventually recognize the “gay” penguins as its parents.

“It takes a little while to learn who your parents are,” McGowan said. “Little kids just don’t care who feeds them. All they want is to be fed.”

The Chinese penguins are the second pair of “gay” penguins to recently capture the public’s attention. Buddy and Pedro are two inseparable male birds at the Toronto Zoo, whose impending break-up sparked public outcry in November. They will be reunited in the spring.

The two will be split up approximately one week from now for breeding season. Zookeepers want them to breed with females to help populate the species, which is endangered. But when the breeding season is over, all the African penguins will eventually return to the same enclosure, and “if Buddy and Pedro want to be together … they will be back together,” said Tom Mason, Toronto Zoo curator of birds.

While McGowan said there is no guarantee that the new parents in China will take to the chick, it is a likely possibility that they will not be able to resist.

“A begging baby is a strong stimulus for anyone,” McGowan said.

Rochester will give crows a rude awakening

Rochester is calling in professionals to roust roosting crows from downtown.

The details of the plan are similar to an announcement several weeks ago — except now, instead of saying Mayo Clinic will be hiring the professional company, the city is doing it. Council members agreed to the plan on Wednesday, and work will begin soon. It takes about three weeks.

The company, U.S. Bird Abatement Services, will work under a not-to-exceed $25,000 contract, and one or more downtown businesses have pledged $12,500, said city council President Dennis Hanson. He declined to name the contributors.

The company uses air horns, trained "attack birds," including peregrine falcons and hawks, and "possibly some lasers — just to scare the birds, not kill them," Hanson said.

The aim is to relocate the untold thousands of crows that have made downtown Rochester their nightly home. The crows are here not necessarily because they've found food here, Hanson said, but because they've found safety and warmth.
