She's Back! (December 2, 2011)
On December 1, the world’s oldest Laysan albatross, a female named “Wisdom”, was sighted by a Fish and Wildlife Service biologist for the first time this breeding season nesting on Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Having survived the tsunami generated by Japan's earthquakes last March, Wisdom has returned along with her mate. She was observed in her normal location behind the Bravo Barracks and was proudly incubating an egg.  Wisdom is at least 61 years old.  She was banded as a nesting adult in the same location by Chan Robbins in December 1956.  Robbins estimated that the bird was a minimum of 5 years old at the time.

The oldest albatross in the world appears to be a northern royal albatross which was located on the South Island of New Zealand and was named “Grandma.”  She reached a banded age of 51.5 years and probable actual age of 61+ years.

WOW!!!  Shocked

Holy Albatross!! That's old...but she looks good!  Wink  (for a bird)!
11898  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Lost puffin found at Winchester hospital sex clinic on: 02-Dec-11, 06:33:29 PM
A puffin has been found at a sexual health clinic in Hampshire after it was thought to have been blown off course from its winter migration.

The male juvenile bird was found cowering in a basement building at Winchester's Royal Hampshire County Hospital on Wednesday.

RSPCA staff picked up the puffin and transferred the bird to the Hart Wildlife Rescue centre near Alton.

Staff described the puffin as being "very hungry and exhausted".
'More feisty'

Hart Wildlife Rescue's Charmian Greenland-Jones said they were "full to bursting point" but managed to find room for the seabird. It is the first time they have looked after a puffin.

"We've been feeding him on fish we had in for a herring gull that was being treated here recently and he is now much more feisty."

She said it was thought he had become separated from other puffins flying south from coastal areas of northern Britain to the Bay of Biscay.

It is hoped the creature will be transferred to the South Devon Seabird Trust in Teignmouth.

The Sea Bird Trust's Jean Bradford said: "If all is well he may be released next month, if the weather is calm, or kept until March when he can rejoin his fellow puffins on their way back to the breeding colonies."

The puffin was found at the bottom of a flight of steps

2:12 p.m.

NX arrived at the Center.  Special thanks to two wonderful transporters who very quickly made room in their schedules to get her here!

NX has been placed into the Center’s “waiting room” — a small, dark, quiet room.  She will be allowed to de-stress there before her physical examination.  Dr. Dave reported that NX was standing and made some “eagle grunts” when he peeked in at her.
3:49 p.m.

Dr. Dave McRuer and Dr. Adam Naylor have started NX’s physical exam.  They will do a complete exam — feeling for any broken bones, soft tissue injuries, or other abnormalities.  They will also take a blood sample to run in the Center’s in-house lead testing machine.  Dr. Dave will be removing the transmitter so that it doesn’t get in the way of any examinations or diagnostics.

All physical exams start with an eye check:

NX exam on December 2

4:05 p.m.

Dr. Dave found injuries to NX’s right carpus [wrist], wing, and eye.   She tested “low” for lead, meaning that lead toxicity is not an issue.

NX weighed in at 4.035 kg.  When she was released in August 2011, she was 4.18 kg — which means she was doing just fine finding her food out in the wild!

We’ll post more information here as we know it.

UPDATE:

Injured NX Arrives at the Wildlife Center

PATIENT: Bald Eagle, #11-0475, NX

LOCATION OF RESCUE:  Northumberland County, Virginia

CAUSE OF ADMISSION:  Suspect hit by car

ADMISSION DATE: December 2, 2011

PROGNOSIS:  Fair

NX, a juvenile Bald Eagle rescued from her nest at the Norfolk Botanical Garden earlier this year and treated and released by the Wildlife Center, was admitted to a permitted wildlife rehabilitator in the Northern Neck on December 1.  The injured eagle was found at 10:45 p.m. in the middle of the road near the Ophelia post office and was picked up by a local animal control officer.

The preliminary report from the permitted rehabilitator was that NX had a wing droop and blood in her mouth, but was feisty and in good condition.

Two transporters made room in their schedules to immediately transport NX to the Wildlife Center.  The bird arrived on December 2 at about 2:10 p.m. and was standing in her transport crate.

Dr. Dave McRuer examined NX and found injuries to her right wing and eye.  There were abrasions on her right carpus [wrist], which were sutured together using a skin stapler.  Dr. Dave also found a one-square-centimeter laceration on her right wing and the vitreous of NX’s right eye also showed some damage.  NX also had subcutaneous emphysema  [air under the skin] on the left side of her chest.  All of these injuries suggest that perhaps NX was hit by a car, though we may know more once radiographs are performed.  Blood work revealed that lead levels are “low”, meaning that lead toxicity is not an issue.

Dr. Dave removed NX’s transmitter so that it does not become damaged or get in the way of any diagnostics.  Everything about the transmitter and fitting looked great!

No outdoor Christmas lights allowed at one Penfield apartment complex! One the same site
Residents of an apartment complex in Penfield say they've been told to take down their outside Christmas decorations.

They say this is definitely not in the Christmas spirit and they also say they don't want a Grinch to steal their Christmas decorations.

At Brook Hill Village across from Panorama Plaza, some residents are not happy with the management.

“You know, there's plenty of people here that do have the lights on and we like it. It kind of brings the spirit out.” Berina Softic even got a call from the rental office while at work yesterday, asking her to take down her lights but she said bah hum-bug and refused. “I just think it's ridiculous that we can't have the lights on our porch. You pay $1,200 to live here plus utilities and then they tell you you can't put anything in the walls. We don't put anything. It's just string it along. It's the holidays. Why not?”

Residents say they pay for the electricity and wonder why anyone would object to putting out lights and other Christmas decorations.

Resident Sandy Wurzer said, “Well, I just think it's kind of like Scrooge at Christmastime that you can't have lights up. It makes it homey in here. This is our home. So I think that part is unfair that they've asked some people, maybe not others, to take their lights down.”

Another resident, Joyce Howard said, “My feeling is this is our home and we should be entitled to enjoy the holidays like everyone else and decorate for them, as long as it's not so invasive on other people.”

There were quite a few apartments decorated outside for Christmas so it appears some people are refusing to take their decorations down.

News 10NBC has placed calls to two different property managers today to inquire about the outdoor Christmas decorations but no one has called back.

(I think this is RIDICULOUS)!!! Pretty soon we will all be fined for putting up CHRISTMAS decorations!! Give me a break!

Injured NX Being Transported to Wildlife Center

NX, a juvenile Bald Eagle rescued from her nest at the Norfolk Botanical Garden earlier this year and treated and released by the Wildlife Center, was admitted to a permitted wildlife rehabilitator in the Northern Neck last night [December 1] .  The injured eagle was found at 10:45 p.m. in the middle of the road near the Ophelia post office and was picked up by a deputy from the local sheriff’s office.

The preliminary report from the permitted rehabilitator is that NX has a wing droop and blood in her mouth, but is feisty and is in good weight and physical condition.

The eagle is now being transported to the Wildlife Center and is expected to arrive late this afternoon.  We’ll post additional information here as we learn it.    crying

Rare for snowy owls to attack pets, say experts

A St. Albert family is warning pet owners to watch the skies after an unprecedented, fatal attack on their dog by a snowy owl.

Darrell Bablitz says he and his wife, Roxy, added a black and brown Yorkshire terrier named Maggie May to their home back in February.

“She was almost one-year-old to the day,” he says, and was about the size of a cat, when attacked Nov. 22 by a large snowy owl.

The couple let the dog out into their Erin Ridge backyard as usual at about 6:30 p.m., Bablitz says. They soon heard a strange whoosh from the yard, which Roxy went to investigate.

“She took about four steps onto our deck and gave out a yell,” Bablitz says.

He ran out in his sweats and slippers and saw a large owl perched atop his dog, grasping it by the head and stomach. The owl was about three feet tall, with a flat face, bright yellow eyes, almost pure white feathers and no ear tufts. He later identified it as a snowy owl.

Bablitz says he took a swing at the owl with a slipper, which scared it off. Veterinarians determined that the bird's sizeable claws had given the dog brain and eye damage.

“They waited 12 hours, and it couldn't stand up or sit anymore, so we had to put it down.”

It's been a rough week since then, Bablitz says. “We've been pretty scared about even going to the backyard.”
Rare attack, say experts

Snowy owls are migratory birds that spend their winters in Alberta, according to Alberta Sustainable Resource Development. They are typically 60 centimetres (two feet) long with white or white-barred-with-brown feathers.

Judging from its size and coloration, says Gordon Court, a wildlife status biologist specializing in raptors who works for Sustainable Resource Development, this particular bird was likely an adult male snowy owl, as the males tend to be pure white.

While snowy owls do eat rabbits, Court says it's extraordinarily rare for them to attack pets, let alone in an urban setting.

“I don't know of any records of a snowy owl doing that sort of thing.”

Great horned owls are known pet predators, he says, but it would be hard to confuse one with a snowy — they're grey and have big ear tufts. This might have been an albino horned owl, he speculates, but that would be even less probable.

Local birder Peter Demulder, a 40-year veteran of bird-watching in the city, says St. Albert usually gets about two to 12 snowy owls each winter, but most stick to hunting voles in open fields.

He was flabbergasted when told of this incident.

“I've never heard of a snowy owl taking a domestic little dog,” he says, and he had never seen a snowy owl in Erin Ridge. “I'll have to go out there tomorrow and have a look around.”

Owls typically attack pets when they're injured or very hungry, Court says, which he suspects was the case here. Pet owners should keep an eye on their animals at night around this time of year as a result.

Bablitz says he doesn't blame the owl for what happened, and hasn't seen it since. “Maybe it was hungry or something.”

He's since warned his neighbours to watch out for owls. “We all have small dogs, so maybe he'll fly back and try to get another one.”
