The owner of a stolen peregrine falcon is appealing to the public to be on the lookout for the banded bird, taken from a truck in Rancho Cordova overnight.

"Someone stole it from the car in the pet carrier, almost for sure without knowing what they had," said Martin Stiasny of Reno.

Stiasny had brought the bird to Roseville for surgery on its feet and was unable to return last night because of snow on Interstate 80.

The bird, about a year old, was hooded and its feet are wrapped, but it may not survive without its antibiotics, according to staff at the Bird and Pet Clinic of Roseville, where veterinarian Victoria Joseph operated on the bird.

"It just had pretty big surgery," Stiasny said. "It cannot take care of itself."

Stiasny breeds birds for falconry and abatement of pest birds near airports.

He is hoping whoever took the bird will leave it where it can be found and reported to animal services authorities.

Falcon Number 2 Checks in at Oceanfront

The Virginia House at the Oceanfront is becoming the hotel of choice along the peregrine falcon’s migratory route down the coast.

Reese Lukei, a bird of prey expert, has been keeping an eye on a female falcon that is spending her 16th winter, for the most part, at the Oceanfront condominium

As far as the falcon is concerned the Virginia House, where the pigeons are plump and the ledges are comfortable, is a five-star hotel.

Now a newcomer may have heard along the bird grapevine that the Virginia House is the East Coast Taj Mahal.

Lukei photographed this second peregrine, a juvenile, on the 12th floor ledge of the Oceanfront condominium this week.

In a real wide-angle shot, Lukei also managed to get a photo of the newcomer and our long-time winter resident as she also perched on the 12th floor ledge around the corner of the building.

Lukei thinks the young one also is a female.

It’s too early to say if the youngster is just using the Virginia House as a stopover or if it is here to stay.

If the Virginia House reputation has anything to do with it, it will be loathe to leave.
