BEND — A famed northern spotted owl named Polka has died at the High Desert Museum in Bend.
Polka and his mate, Dot, who died last year, drew attention whenever Dot laid eggs. Their owlets were released into the wild or sent to other programs to breed the threatened species.
The pair helped biologists and the public learn more about the owls and how to protect their old-growth habitat from logging.
Polka was 26. Spotted owls typically live about 16 years in the wild.

WOW, you downstaters and NJ'ers (is that a word?) are having weird weather for sure! Talked to a friend who lives up here in upstate NY and her brother in NJ had four inches of snow on the ground today! My sisters on LI were freaking out this morning about the prospect of snow in October. We "hardy" people in upstate Siberia are basking in glorious 37 degree temps but no snow! We have had snow in previous years on Halloween, but not this year! Donna, did you post this video of snow three years ago? Yes mam, that was me, 3 years to the date! I love snow but NOT now!

It's still snowing. We just had an emergency alert on the TV that there's a state of emergency in Dutchess county across the river from me...power lines down on the main highways-Taconic Parkway & I84 are both shut down.
Same here Ei, state of emergency! Trees down all over, power outages...sparks a flyin. Lost ours for 5 minutes then went back on! It's bad out there. 7-10 inches here so far. Where is this snow when I want it at Christmas! (I have a sick porch cat I can't find or catch. Been missing for a few days, saw her yesterday throwing up across the street. She cried when she saw me, she never ever meows! I feel so bad for her. She is probably under the porch across the way but I can't get to her.) This stuff keeps me awake all night. Poor Lowrider! Snows not helping!

Nice report. I enjoyed reading it. Even though it was published in a Long Boat Key, Florida paper, it is about migration observed from Fire Island -- a barrier beach across from Long Island, NY. Best beach in the world! Makes me want to move back to LI just to watch the migration and shore birds. Love them all. And yes it is cold! I just heard on the news that a Halloween storm may bring up to six inches of snow to NYC and Boston! WOW! Snow on Halloween is weird up here, but in NYC -- unheard of! It sounds like a coastal storm..Donna, do you have snow forecast for NJ? Yes, we do as a matter of fact. Up to 10 inches in some places. Not sure what we are getting. I think it's a surprise!
