12346  Other Nature Related Information / Raptor Web Cams / Re: Wildlife Center of Virginia in the news on: 20-Oct-11, 08:31:21 PM
One of the orphaned black bear cubs rescued from the median of Route 58 in Suffolk has died, the Wildlife Center of Virginia reported.  crying

Wildlife rehabilitators at the center found the smaller cub dead in the bear enclosure on Thursday, said Randy Huwa of the Wildlife Center.

“At this point, the veterinary team does not know why [it] died,” Huwa said.

The Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study at the University of Georgia will perform a necropsy on the cub, Huwa said. It likely will take several weeks to receive the results.

The two cubs were found Monday morning after their mother apparently was struck by a vehicle on U.S. Route 58, near the landfill. Several motorists called 911 to report the body on the side of the road and the bear cubs wandering aimlessly.

By the time police arrived, the cubs had escaped danger from the traffic by climbing trees. Workers with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries arrived, shot the cubs with tranquilizers and transported them to the Wildlife Center.

They weighed about 21 and 23 pounds upon arrival, center officials said. The center’s veterinary team performed physical examinations on the cubs, drew blood for diagnostic tests and did skin-scraping tests to check for mites.

Dr. Dave McRuer, director of veterinary services at the Wildlife Center, said the smaller bear was malnourished upon arrival.

“You can feel his ribs and his spine. He doesn’t have a lot of muscle on him,” he said. “He definitely needs more food.”

But other than being small, both bears were in good condition, he said Tuesday.

Huwa said Thursday the remaining bear cub would be monitored closely over the next few days.

How awful!

12353  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / The Lobstick Family of Whooping Cranes on: 20-Oct-11, 10:53:34 AM
The celebrities of the Whooping Crane world have to be the Lobstick family, named for the Lobstick marshes where they nest in Canada. The Lobstick male, at 33, is the oldest Whooping Crane in the wild whose age we know for certain. And Tom Stehn of the US Fish and Wildlife Service tells us the Lobsticks have raised 17 chicks in 29 years. Still, increasing the population of Whooping Cranes is slow going. Healthy wetlands in Canada and in Texas – where the cranes winter – are essential to the future of the endangered Whooping Crane.

Hope today MAK is feeling MUCH better!  Hopefully the PT isn't too much for her, but sure it will tired her out.  Hang in there MAK!  This too shall pass, then see if you want to return for more torture!  LOL!  I've been told people really hesitate to do #2 if #1 was rough!  Talking about knees here!!   silly

Actually, when I had my first knee done, my husband didn't think he'd ever get me back for the second one because it's a tough rehab. But the wear and tear on the non-operative knee with the first operation made me want to get the second one done which I did 2 months later. It was well worth it having both knees pain free than have one good one and still having pain in the other from the arthritis.

Makes sense to me!

Just talked to MAK, she's in LALA land, almost fell asleep on the ph. She's been up and about but in pain, not from the surgery but her other leg and her arms. Hope she gets to go to therapy when they release her but that's up to her insurance and they are making a stink...(what else is new!). All tubes are out...YAY! We'll see what tomorrow brings.

She asked about the falcons! I said ??, none at nest today and not sure if Archer is still around. We know Unity is. Smiley

Not sure why there is such a big space before the links!  stupid

The space is where the Ustream video gets embedded into your post. Unfortunately, Ustream changed something and broke it.

I have disabled embedding of Ustream videos until I can figure out what they did. The "big space" should be gone.

Yeah, I thought the stream would show up but it didn't. Thanks
