I'm curious as to why "Lurker Come Out Week" is in October.  It seems to me that most of those 502 non-posters who were mildly curious enough to sign up during nesting season would be long gone by now, leaving only the diehards who come here every day for "scraps" of news about the falcons (like me  Grin )  The lurkers should be encouraged to join in during the height of the season when they are more likely to be here, I would think.

Just my observation.

It's not really an Oct. thing, I was just looking at the stats this morning and thought, let's try and get some people who joined to post. We've had lots sign up after the nesting season, so what better way to bring them out. I was just hoping we could get some newbies in on some of the conversations. Some may have great Bird stories they would like to share, opinions on AB, U and whoever else comes along. No one has to leave the board after fledging, (even though we had none this year)! Most of the people who singed up are from 2009-2010 season, when we had babies. I'm sure a lot has to do with the forum format, even that goes smooth once you get the hang of it. The Winter months can be very long and boring so what better way to pass the time then to be with friends!! Just my opinion also..  devil

Panel beater? When I visit Ireland each year, I see this kind of business
advertised everywhere. But I had my Irish family roaring with laughter when I
told them we call this place of business a collision shop. They had a mental
picture of someone going into a store and buying an auto accident!

When: October 10-14
Why:  Because you signed up and then you disappear!

COME OUT, COME OUT WHERE EVER YOU ARE. WE WANT TO HEAR FROM ALL OUR LURKERS!

IF ONLY FOR A DAY, LET US HEAR FROM YOU!

Example: MAK, she was a lurker and look at her now. You can do this people, I know you can. With the Winter months approaching, it gets pretty boring. Why not have some fun and join in on the conversations. (You can do it)

A Wellington man got a huge surprise when he found a duck stuck in the grill of his car.

Phillip Johnson said he was driving on State Highway 1, near Levin when two ducks came onto the road.

He braked in the 100km/h zone, but was not able to avoid them and heard a thump.

He saw one walking in the rear view mirror and thought the other had flown away, Mr Phillips told the Dominion Post.

The next day, he went to check the car for damage.

"I saw some feathers, then I saw the whole duck was still there, and it was still alive. I was surprised more than anything, then concerned about how badly was it damaged."

It looked like the grill had bent with the duck going straight in, he says.

"It was just sitting there looking at me the way ducks do. It was quite curious."

He drove to a vet, who accompanied him to a panel beater.

The panel beater bent the grill back to free the bird, which went straight to a puddle of water.

Vet Allan Probert says the duck suffered bruising and a damaged wing.

He expected she would make a full recovery.

"It's one of the most unusual cases I have come across."

He would release the duck at Zealandia ecosanctuary when it recovered.

I've seen a bald eagle being chased by a much smaller peregrine falcon, and a couple of times the battle ventured into merlin air space, the dove-sized hawk succeeding in chasing both birds away - a real sight to see. It was loud and it was fast. I couldn't keep the smaller hawks in my binocular field as they were diving so fast.

Mak and I saw what I'm pretty sure was a Merlin today downtown on Andrews St.  It flew over us heading toward the FCT.  I was telling her how feisty these smaller falcons could be.   happy

Apparently!!
