Where is she now? Still in Northumberland County, hanging out on the Little Wicomico River! Or at least, that's where NX the Bald Eagle was on Saturday. In and out of spotty cell coverage areas, so no data from today -- but the area where she is looks to be an excellent spot to be an eagle!

I guess it's safe to assume that Harlequin has flown off for a life of her own? I'll miss that silly one and wish her the best that life can offer her.

I love when they do this!  wub2 wub2

Is this pic from today?! I did not think they did this outside "the season" - what do I know, however!

Click on the thumbnail. Then read the date on the left side of the full-size picture.

Sir! Yes, Sir!!

I have never heard of a Sora, so I googled it.

A small, secretive bird of freshwater marshes, the Sora is the most common and widely distributed rail in North America. Its distinctive descending whinny call can be easily heard from the depths of the cattails, but actually seeing the little marsh-walker is much more difficult.

Kathy Q or Kinney caught this?? A Green Heron too!! Oh and they got a Cardinal!!! Sad

Dining With the Ks  Kathy Q & Kinney

I thought this was so interesting that I wanted to share this info with all of you falconheads.  Thanks to super-duper prey-snooper, Amy, we have a β€œdigest” of the prey that was found in the nest box.  At the time of the banding, Amy and John conduct a clean sweep of the contents of the box and Amy has spent time analyzing and identifying what was there.

Here’s her summary.  If you think this might be too morbid, don’t read on.  But this is nature and this is the way the Ks survive:

β€œHere’s a list of 21 prey species I’ve identified from the remains we cleaned out of the Market Tower box at chick banding time this spring:

Least Bittern (bill)
Green Heron (bill)
Sora (5 legs)
American Woodcock
Rock Pigeon
Mourning Dove
Black-billed Cuckoo
Yellow-billed Cuckoo
Common Nighthawk
Chimney Swift
Northern Flicker
Blue Jay
American Robin
Cedar Waxwing
European Starling
Yellow Warbler
Rose-breasted Grosbeak
Northern Cardinal
Red-winged Blackbird
Common Grackle
Baltimore Oriole

I’m still working on identifying all the remains from a few more boxes, but so far Market Tower has the most diversity out of all the boxes (but also MT had the largest quantity of remains, so this is not too surprising)”

Thanks to Amy for the pictures you see in this post laying out the evidence.

As we have seen throughout the years, KathyQ and Kinney are good providers for themselves and their families.  I think it is most interesting to have such a deep look into their world.  Thank you Amy for all your hard work.

And the Ks are still around, been seeing them in the box off and on all summer so far.  I have no word on Phoenix – remember the old falconhead axiom, no news is good news.

http://www.conservewildlifenj.org/blog/2011/09/13/news-from-the-international-shorebird-project/

Bandedbirds.org is an effort to collect data on shorebirds throughout their range from the southern tip of Chile to the Canadian arctic. This effort has been underway for many years and has an international network of volunteers reporting re-sightings data on shorebirds.

The following was shared with the shorebird community by Jeannine Parvin, administrator for bandedbirds.org.

The bird being discussed was banded in NJ in May 2005.  It seemed to return to NJ each year, having been resighted most years up to 2010. The bird seemed to be heading back up to NJ for the 2011 Spring shorebird season, when it was shot and killed in French Guiana.  Illegal hunting is still a big issue for shorebirds.  Paired with loss and degradation of habitat, and pollution, these birds face major threats.  Read more about CWF’s work to monitor and protect shorebirds here.

A red knot identified as FL(PPM) was shot in French Guiana by a hunter.

The data was submitted by Alexandre Vinot from French Guiana. He regularly reports to bandedbirds.org and is a volunteer with GEPOG.

His comments state: β€œshot in Mana Ricefield – flag given to Antoine Hausselman, who gave me the data”.
