Shooting of Whimbrels sparks calls for regulation of shorebird hunting in the Caribbean. Two Whimbrels Numenius phaeopus tracked by scientists from a US university have been shot by hunters on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, highlighting the continuing lack of protection for migratory shorebirds in this important part of their flyway.

12815  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Re: Penguin out of order: It's a miracle! Happy Feet (probably) alive on: 15-Sep-11, 09:11:38 PM

Good news, penguin lovers: Happy Feet is, more than likely, alive.

The emperor penguin which washed up on Peka Peka Beach, north of Wellington, about two months ago was released into the Southern Ocean on September 2 with a transmitter glued to his back to track his movements.

Transmission stopped a week ago and it was feared he could have become part of the food chain.

However, a penguin expert from Massey University believes it is more likely the transmitter simply fell off.

"Of the natural predators, leopard seals would be far further south, around the Antarctic continent, at this time," said Associate Professor John Cockrem, from the Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences.

"I also think the chances of meeting an orca are pretty small.

"It is most likely the transmitter has fallen off."

Happy Feet - named for the 2006 film - would slowly make his way back to Antarctica but no one could guess his course or when he would arrive, Prof Cockrem said.

"It is highly likely Happy Feet is still alive."

I'm happy with this  Guess we can wish him well again!!

Shocked That's way too many! Thing is what about all the current buildings without taking measures this will continue whether new buildings have preventative stuff or not!  Sad

I remember reading an article that said 90,000 is nothing in bird world!! Not even a dent. I think it's a BIG dent in the population.

Friends of ours had a Minah (sp?) Bird that said:

"How long are they staying?"

and

"Are the pubs open yet?"

We had friends too with Minahs...Chief and Joe were their names and Chief said "Wanna Beer Joe?" And he also said $%#% and other things a child of my age should not hear! (At the time)  devil

Why do they leave so early? In June? Pretty cool stuff Bobbie.

I did not retain that info re the June departure, Donna. Better read more carefully...

______

First paragraph says: "Our knowledge about what this amazing species does once it leaves the UK in August is extremely poor, hampering our ability to explain population changes."

Now, I must continue to read, lest they did not have an editor!!

The first bird left the UK on the 3rd June and the last on the night of the 22/23 July.

So reading farther than the first paragraph does it, huh? I am a doof!
