Why do they leave so early? In June? Pretty cool stuff Bobbie.

I did not retain that info re the June departure, Donna. Better read more carefully...

______

First paragraph says: "Our knowledge about what this amazing species does once it leaves the UK in August is extremely poor, hampering our ability to explain population changes."

Now, I must continue to read, lest they did not have an editor!!

The first bird left the UK on the 3rd June and the last on the night of the 22/23 July.

http://www.azfamily.com/news/2-red-tailed-hawks-released-into-wild-after-months-of-rehabilitation-129830148.html video

The first bird was orphaned by the Wallow Fire last May. She was only 5 or 6 weeks old when she was found in Eagar. Because she had been forced from her nest too early, she had not fully learned to fly and was unable to hunt on her own.

The second bird, an adult female about 5 or 6 years old, had been shot in the wing. She was discovered in the area of 67th Avenue and Buckeye Road in January.

The cuckoos have all reached Africa... a fascinating site from the BTO.

12838  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Pictures from the Rfalconcam cameras on: 14-Sep-11, 05:25:25 PM
Unlike the other cameras, Camera 1 will store several pictures in its internal memory if it can't upload them right away. When the connection is restored, the camera will flush them out before uploading new ones. What you are seeing is the pictures it stored shortly after the connection was lost on Sunday.

Ahhh, OK. Thanks

12840  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Don's Jersey Birding: Good bird or bad bird? on: 14-Sep-11, 12:36:39 PM
http://wildnewjersey.tv/2011/09/13/dons-jersey-birding-good-bird-or-bad-bird.aspx story and pics

Why are grackles made out to be bad guys? Because they eat seed that people put out for, guess what…BIRDS? How dare those grackles have the nerve to think that they are birds! I often think that if grackles were much more colorful, let’s say for argument’s sake, pink, I would be getting phone calls asking how to attract them to the backyard. But instead most people think the grackle wears the black leather jacket of backyard hoodlum.
