13261  Anything Else / Totally OT / The Incredible Magdeburg Water Bridge in Germany on: 16-Aug-11, 07:37:03 AM
The Magdeburg Water Bridge is a navigable aqueduct in Germany that connects the Elbe-Havel Canal to the Mittelland Canal, and allows ships to cross over the Elbe River. At 918 meters, it is the longest navigable aqueduct in the world.

The Elbe-Havel and Mittelland canals had previously met near Magdeburg but on opposite sides of the Elbe. Ships moving between the two had to make a 12-kilometer detour, descending from the Mittelland Canal through the Rothensee boat lift into the Elbe, then sailing downstream on the river, before entering the Elbe-Havel Canal through Niegripp lock. Low water levels in the Elbe often prevented fully laden canal barges from making this crossing, requiring time-consuming off-loading of cargo.

13262  Anything Else / Totally OT / WHAT PILOTS SEE WHEN LANDING AT OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE on: 16-Aug-11, 07:33:43 AM
This is just south of us on Hwy 75 south. A farmer does it with his tractor and not sure if he uses a plow or a disc He uses GPS to get the letters readable. He has done this every fall for several years now.
Here's the view from the flight pattern into OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE ( Bellevue , NE., just south of Omaha ). This is what our servicemen see when landing at Offutt AFB. Hat tip to the Bellevue farmer who made it happen!   clap

FYI - an ASBO is an Anti-Social Behaviour Order... meted out to neighbourhood tear-aways and to otherwise anti-social "citizens" in the UK.

13266  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Asbo swan treated for arthritis after being seen limping (UK) on: 16-Aug-11, 07:19:18 AM
An angry swan named Mr Asbo may no longer be able to terrorise members of the public after he was found suffering from arthritis.

The bird, which has hit the headlines after clashing with river-users over several years, was rescued by an animal-lover and taken to a wildlife centre.

RSPCA staff said he may need to have a toe amputated and live out his days in an animal hospital.

The swan lives on the River Cam in Cambridge, and after attacks on people using the waterway, attempts were made to have him removed.

RSPCA inspector Chris Nice said he was “surprised” a member of the public had caught Mr Asbo “with no trouble at all”.

He said: “Wild animals don’t usually live long enough to get arthritis.”

Angry Mr Asbo attacks boater.

'Perky' Happy Feet set to swim home

Happy Feet is to head home at the end of the month, ending a two-month stay at Wellington Zoo.

Zoo spokeswoman Kate Baker said the emperor penguin was doing well and had even managed a few quick dips.

"He's very perky. We opened the slide up to the saltwater pool [on Sunday] because it's snowing in Wellington. He had a swim [on Sunday] night briefly."

She said staff coaxed Happy Feet into a second swim yesterday morning, which showed he was making excellent progress.

"Because he's swimming it shows that he's got good waterproofing."

Happy Feet now weighs 26.6kg, having put on 4kg since his arrival.

He has spent the past seven weeks in the care of Wellington Zoo since washing up on Peka Peka beach, north of Wellington, in June.

He has had many procedures performed to flush sand, rocks and liquid out of his stomach.

The zoo will today announce how Happy Feet will make the more than 3000km journey back to the Antarctic.

"It will be really rewarding to see him being released back into the wild," Ms Baker said.

An "army" of zoo staff ranging from the vet team to property staff had been working with Happy Feet, she said.

He is expected to leave at the end of the month.

Travel options previously floated have included a combination of refrigerated truck, boat and air travel, ending with his release at a point beyond Stewart Island.

The famous penguin is the second known to have landed here. The other landing was in 1967 when an emperor penguin was found on Southland's Oreti Beach.

As any resident of upstate New York will tell you, the red-tailed hawk is the most common hawk in North America. Often seen perched on utility poles along major highways, this majestic animal is one of the most widely recognized raptor species.

In 2003, scientists at Finger Lakes Community College and Braddock Bay Raptor Research (BBRR) began asking questions about the migration patterns that they were observing during BBRR's annual hawk watch and banding program.

OMG, couldn't they keep her as an educational bird? Give her to CPF!! Put her down for what? Don't let Mark Nash hear about this! I'm shocked!   Shocked

And what's really sad is that Pa is pair bonding with the new female.  He doesn't know what happened to S2 so he is moving on and S2 doesn't realize what's happening with Pa.  All because some jerk decided to shoot S2, life has sadly changed for this pair.

This is just breaking my heart!
