13281  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Irate owl sets upon hapless duck after being startled mid-flight. UK on: 15-Aug-11, 07:06:54 AM
This irate owl clearly saw fowl play, after launching an astonishing attack on a stray duck that wandered into its flight path.

The hapless duck was set upon after taking off from a pond in Ypres, Belgium, before being knocked back into the water by its bigger species.

A falconer had released the African Oehoe Owl for an early morning training session, but it was startled mid-air by the duck and appeared to have taken offence

Photographer Devid Camerlynck, 37, said the owl chased the beleaguered back to a nearby pond, before hitting it into the water.

'I was photographing some falconers training their owls, falcons and buzzards for an upcoming show.

'There were some ducks in a pond nearby minding their own business but one took off suddenly.

'I don't think the owl liked the ducks using his "airspace" so he smacked it back down into the water.

'He was not attacking the duck as prey because it was too big. It was more a case of the owl showing his superiority.'

He added: 'The duck wasn't killed or badly wounded - it swam away with the other ducks and the owl returned to the falconer.'

he should have ducked!!
13282  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Are Sparrows the new "Rappers?" on: 15-Aug-11, 07:01:04 AM
Sparrows' birdsong is not what it seems - they're actually trading insults

The sound of sparrows can be music to our ears. But researchers say their birdsong is actually an aggressive form of swapping insults.

The species' soothing sounds actually have a lot in common with the profanity-strewn bragging of rappers, with male sparrows using them to prove how macho they are – and the tougher the area, the more they do so.

The birds usually have a large repertoire of songs, and just like their human equivalents, most of the boasting and trading of insults is all about impressing the girls.

It seems sparrows are doing something similar according to the research conducted by a number of Canadian universities for the journal Behavioural Ecology and Sociobiology.

It mirrors the kind of 'battle rap' contests made famous by, among others, Eminem in his film 8 Mile.

Up-and-coming hip-hop stars hone their skills in one-on-one contests where they trade insults in rhyme against a music background until one of the two is deemed the winner.

Don't push me, 'cos I'm close to the edge: London House Sparrows in a Fulham garden. Their song mirrors the battle rapping of up and coming hip hop stars

The only excitement at the nest so far!

Those darn Starlings!   Wink I know many consider them a nuisance bird, but I've always liked them.  They are such good parents.   Those kids follow their parents around, and the parents work so hard to raise the babies!
And, if legend is true....a fan of Shakespeare released starlings in Central Park, and that is how they came to be here.  I never knew if this is fact or fiction, but as a fan of Shakespeare, I choose to believe it, and love the little starlings.   Sheakespeare  actually mentioned quite a few birds and flowers in  his works, and many have  followed up on those  mentions.

I don't think Starling babies ever leave. I have the same 5, mom, dad and 3 kids in my yard since they fledged. Like 2 months ago! They go no where without each other. They zoom right by me, back and forth then land on the grass and pick. Cute actually.
