Cody Brown was driving a packer at the west Edmonton landfill when he almost ran over a hawk, standing still on his trail.
The heavy equipment operator, who spotted the bird late last year, said the bird looked thin and sick, and nearly all of its flight feathers were missing.

13307  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Hopes of baby boom as sea eagles build love nest (Ireland) on: 14-Aug-11, 07:19:47 AM
TWO RARE birds of prey released into the wild have turned out to be love birds.

The white-tailed sea eagles, released in Co Kerry a year apart, took wing to stake out new territory 160km away in Co Clare, where they paired up.

Conservationists are now hoping the eagles will produce the first native-born chick here in 110 years.

The white-tailed sea eagles were released separately in Killarney in 2008 and 2009. Earlier this year the birds were spotted near Mountshannon in Co Clare.

Project manager in Kerry, Dr Allan Mee, says the fact that the birds have paired up is a major success.

"We had no idea that they were potentially a pair. That is the whole goal. They take five years to breed and we are waiting for our first breeding in the wild so hopefully this will happen in the next year or two," he said.

Conservationists are also celebrating the continued success of a reintroduction programme for the red kite in Co Wicklow.

Efforts which saw the release of more than 100 of the birds over the past four years are bearing fruit, with 17 chicks fledged this year.

Wicklow project manager Lorcan O'Toole has described the fledglings as a milestone development.

"It has been the most successful project but they are an easier species to work with and will achieve success quicker," he said.

Mr O'Toole also revealed that legislation which banned the laying of poison has brought to a halt the deaths of eagles and red kites.

Don't get me going on Kaver, I miss him...BIG time. I just can't see him leaving and not coming back for his Mariah. Nothing would keep him away from his lair. Not Archer and not Beauty. So what happened to him? It was time for him to Migrate when he disappeared...after that, will always haunt me. I actually thought that was him at U of R and people were just keeping it quiet, I honestly did but if Brian, (he knows his birds) and Carol saw him after, then I'm just gonna have to believe he is still out there looking for his Love, Mariah.

ZeZe Ferreira recently snapped this shot of a pileated woodpecker near Byng Inlet. She said in an e-mail to Northern Life that the bird was “looking for his mate, when the two were distracted by a bear romping along in the bush near their tree.”

13320  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Port falcon chicks grow up, leave nest on: 12-Aug-11, 08:55:22 PM
The four peregrine falcon chicks born in a nest box high atop a Port of Olympia crane this spring have flown away, but they haven’t moved far.

The two male and two female falcons have been spotted in recent weeks in a west Olympia neighborhood just several blocks northwest of their birthplace.

“They’re chirping and flying around here all the time,” said west side resident Phil Olsen.

He said he sees the birds alone or in pairs on his property, either sitting on a fence or bathing in his yard in the indentation of a granite rock he fills with fresh water daily.

“The neighbors like having them around,” Olsen said.

It’s likely that the birds, which are about 3 months old, are still in contact with their parents, a peregrine pair that has been nesting in the port crane and hatching chicks for nine years, noted state Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist Joe Buchanan.

“Oftentimes after they leave the nest, they remain in contact with the adults, learning how to fly and hunt,” Buchanan said.

Buchanan said his agency had a report about two weeks ago of the adult falcons and their offspring, perched on the dome of the Capitol Building.

Anyone living within a few miles of the nesting site has a chance this time of year to see the young birds, or hear their wailing calls.

Peregrine falcons, the world’s fastest-flying bird, were pushed to the edge of extinction in the 1970s as persistent pesticides built up in the food chain and caused a fatal thinning of their egg shells. They started to recover when DDT and similar pesticides were banned.

Twelve years ago, the peregrine falcon was removed from the federal Endangered Species List. It was removed from the state endangered list in April 2002.

The state is home to about 150 nest sites from Bellingham to Olympia, both in rural and urban areas. Not all nest sites are occupied each year.

Approximately 30 percent of the peregrine falcons that hatch each year survive to age 1, according to state Fish and Wildlife studies.

The four young birds hanging around west Olympia probably will disperse in the weeks ahead to establish their own territories, Buchanan said.

But not before Olsen and his neighbors have a chance to enjoy the birds a little more.
