The Parrot was crying, the wounded wing, the other not, Troublemaker, was probably referring to the Parrot screaming next door.

Yes, Paul was referring to July 2008. I don't know if Quest will leave for migration or Kendal for that matter. They may go off together on a mini Vaca, will be cool to know. She still has her transmitter! Harlie, now that's another story, she may or may not leave. Hope someone at Harlequin will let us know when and if she does decide to venture out!  Sad

And yet another ear-worm... let's see if I can remember the words without looking them up...

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
merry, merry king of the bush is he
Laugh, kookabura, laugh, kookabura
Gay your life must be

And another verse:

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Countin' all the monkeys he can see
Stop, kookabura, stop, kookabura
That's not a monkey, that's me.

See, Girl Scouts were useful for something...

I learned that in 1st grade and always remembered it! But DANG, it won't leave my head!

13327  Other Nature Related Information / Falcon Web Cams / Elizabeth NJ Union County Courthouse on: 12-Aug-11, 01:24:00 PM

ELIZABETH — Three chicks that were hatched by a pair of peregrine falcons nesting atop the Union County Courthouse tower in May are preparing to take flight.

Peregrine falcons have been nesting on the tower for at least six years. They originally attempted to build nests around it, but failed, prompting the county and the state Department of Environmental Protection to erect a nest box in 2006.

Peregrine falcons are crow-size predatory birds and are an endangered species, according to state wildlife officials. They often have been said to be the fastest animals on the planet in their hunting dive, the stoop, which involves soaring to a great height, then diving steeply at speeds commonly said to be more than 200 mph.

The falcons traditionally have nested on cliff faces and rocky outcrops, but as these habitats vanished, the birds turned to high buildings to build their homes. In the 1960s and ’70s, there was a steep decline in numbers, some believe from the widespread use of DDT, officials said.

Since the pesticide was banned, there seems to have been a slow increase in their numbers. Officials estimate that there are only 25 known pairs in New Jersey.

A few?? I can ID that sound from when I used to watch Aussie soaps...

And every Tarzan movie.

Yes! Yes! Right!!! And I think we were meant to think the sounds were from monkeys??? I particularly like the Tarzan films in which lions and tigers do battle. How things have changed!

I always thought that was a monkey in the background of all the jungle movies!  Embarrassed

13334  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Humans to live in huge hummingbird nest at Lincoln Park Zoo..for a day on: 12-Aug-11, 07:00:17 AM
Updated: August 11, 2011 2:14AM

Bird is the word at the Lincoln Park Zoo, where a human-sized hummingbird nest will be under construction beginning Thursday.

The nest, made of 1,800 feet of bungee cord and an enormous steel twig, will be occupied by three TV hosts on Monday as part of Nat Geo Wild’s “Live Like An Animal” series.

The three men previously spent 24 hours in a man-made beaver’s lodge in London and a wasp’s nest in New York City.

“It’s just sort of a test, can you build like an animal, can you live like an animal,” said Richard Pearson, the show’s producer, as he strolled through Lincoln Park Zoo looking for local materials like wood chips or plants to incorporate into the nest. “In this particular place, three grown men will spend a total of 24 hours living in the nest and we’ll see what they experience.”

They won’t have much room. The nest will be approximately 5.5 feet in diameter and 3 feet deep, which mimics the hummingbirds small nest of “stretchy and strong materials,” Pearson said.

On the previous two projects, the TV crew realized they could not build the animal home as well as the animals could. Pearson said he wouldn’t be surprised if at some point there is a trip to Bed, Bath and Beyond to pick up some sort of necessary “doodad.”

“There comes a point that what the animal does is impossible to do on a human scale without a bit of a cheat,” he said. “By the time you’ve got three men in there, you can’t afford for the nest to fall.”

The men can leave to use the bathroom, which they may need to do often as producers plan to have them drink a can of pop every 10 minutes, a similar diet to the hummingbird.

The construction and nest live-in are open to the public and will take place in the zoo’s main mall.
